Title: ~~NEWSFLASH~~: DE is beefing up security AGAIN
Post by: Princess Aelya on April 18, 2004, 07:06:58 pm
From now on, NO ONE may register an account on my guild forums without first asking for my consent. If you do I WILL delete and/or ban it from the forums. Wanna ask for consent? My contact info is in my profile. If you are a stranger to me though, don\'t expect to get consent.

PLEASE NOTE: This thread was made to inform, not to fight/flame people. there is quite enough of that already. So I would kindly ask any repliers to not bother posting if they have any negative ideas. And I would also ask any mod\'s to please lock the thread if it even BEGINS to get out of hand. Thank you.

Hmm im curious, what is the reason for this action?

If push comes to shove perhaps I\'ll announce the reason. But no, not yet I won\'t.

Aww, does that include me?? I\'m already blocked at like 4 different Ip addresses anyway, so I\'m sure you won\'t mind me hanging around. :D
Title:
Post by: Princess Aelya on April 18, 2004, 09:12:58 pm
It includes everyone. And I will be very strict on this policy.

For once he makes a good point.

Miss Aleya, why is this announcement a stand-alone thread?
Is it a political manuever to gain more publicity perhaps?
/me holds the microphone up to Aleya

im  interested if there is a reason also or this is a ruse to get people interested in the forums...since my first inpulse was to ask you to go on your forums...thankfully im sober so i choose not to :P

to the point below: Stop stalling and answer the question!

Monketh: Well, I didnt really feel like bumping a thread that is months old. Better to just make a new one.

Seperot: I don\'t care if people are interested or not, there is no grand event that requires you to get by a bouncer before you enter. It\'s a mere security measure that anyone who gets any ideas of registering should be aware of. Trust me, there is a reason. But I do not wish to share it :P

When people have secrets it ticks me off i must know what it is darned ;). Can\'t you be bribed or something? Give a hint, is it going to be a surprise? :D

*shoves some more*

It is nothing special really. We are not making a doomsday device or anything :P As I said it\'s just a security measure.

Why not just take the measure and post the announcement on your own site under a news portion or on a header on ur forum instead of making a big fancy thread just for it? You said if push come to shove you would tell us, now bloodie well tell us!!

Because guests cannot do anything except login or register. And they are not supposed to register without consent. So it is better to announce it where people can see it.

-=knows the reason=-
-=also can be bribed pretty cheaply=-

The reason Aelya has enacted this new rule is a very good and well-informed reason.  I will also be taking the same measures on my forums.

Aelya, doesn\'t your forum have an option to make it so accounts have to be approved by the administrator? I know some others do, so the banning and deleting would be an unneccesary measure.

We have a members only section to our forums, so only people who are approved by a Champion in the Mercenary Guild can see/post in the members only section.

Also, last time I checked a lot of the forum was public... letting people see but not post in those sections seems pretty pointless to me, if security is what you\'re worried about.

EDIT: Looks like that\'s changed... none of it was interesting, anyway.

You could have made a new DE general news, recruitment and stuff thread.

I hereby formally request this thread\'s title be changed to something more vague and guildthread-y.

I can\'t even imagine a reason for closing off registration to forums, unless you have a members only section people some how are getting into, this can easily be done if a member on the forum has recently posted! Lots of boards can make you check there last posts or 10 most recent posts which will enable you to see into the boards your not suppose to be in

...in which case you\'ll see last 10 posts from part of forums you\'re allowed to see...

anyway, Sep, Monk... you two should know what can be done with forums if one wills to...

Definately, thought I should let yah know that works! I know because I tried it not intentionally but it worked!

Monketh: We are not recruiting, and we do not publicly recruit. We hand pick our members. Making a thread like that would be totally pointless. And this IS a general news thread.

DepthBlade: As I said there is a reason for it and as Aendar said it is a good reason. I have never done things for no reason in the past. I would think people would know me better than that. You either believe there is a good reason or you don\'t. I don\'t care either way.

Davis: I\'m not sure, but i\'ll look into it.

Well I believe your reason was a good one, why waste the time making this thread and changing the options on your boards for no reason right? Unless you were just bored and wanted to start some gossip but I think your a lot more respectable than to do something like that :]
