here\'s my first pic, i kinda work at a slow rate though lol, this took about 2 hours. it\'ll be my sig now too:)
-
Its a nice picture but you should shorten it up if you want it to be your sig! *looks at his watch* you should be getting a PM from moogie shortly to shorten it up :D 500 x 140 pixels i think is the limit?
-
Nice pic, but...
it\'ll be my sig now too
Heh, no it won\'t. ;)
At least, not untill you read the rules (http://www.planeshift3d.com/wbboard/thread.php?threadid=8016&boardid=13&styleid=3) on signatures. :)
-
Now for the criticism:
-I would prefer to see thicker lines as opposed to thin ones with a blur.
-Eyes done with an anime-esque style drawing usually have very well defined pupils, iris\'s, and glare. I recommend drawing those on paper first.
...and a few tips:
-Get \"the GIMP\" (GNU Image Manipulation Program)
-Read the tutorial on \"GIMP\'ing\" an image.
-Try drawing a line to define a sword, then filling it in. This method tends to make many objects straighter.
-Try using shapes to define the body before putting clothing, details, etc on the image.
-There are many drawing tutorials out there on the net. I considerably improved my skill just by reading a few! ;)
( http://www.polykarbon.com/tutorials/index.htm has some good ones.)
-Practice is a good thing. I need plenty of it. :P
That said, good job! :)) It took me a while to understand how to better draw --and much longer, color-- an image.
-
it is a nice job and its very good indeed for a first try
Monkeths, pretty much, spot on
All I\'m going to add is PHOTOSHOP FOREVER!!!1
, ehem..... and also, remember to plan ahead when your drawing, some of this is layering your image in photoshop/gimp some is before that, tweaking the scetch. Even if it takes ages get the scetch to a point where you feel it looks \"right\", keep all three dimensions in mind, and do your shading relative to a light source and dont just go on colour regions use your mind to make a 3d lightmap on the character so when you light it it looks right. all this rambling all boils down to practice practice... and yes... sausage...no wait its practice.
but yeah, good job all the same :)
-
ok, sorry about huge sig, didnt know there were size limits, but i fixed to 100 pix high.
thnx for all the comments, ill try to work on them. monketh about the straight line for the sword, i didnt really want it to be straight, i wanted to be kind of rounded for both the handle and the sheath. it still doesnt look right though b/c the 2 sides arent really the same shape, but oh well, like kintall said, sausage:). also, how thick should my lines be? i made them 3 pixels, and i thought that was kinda big. should i go 4 or 5 pixels?
oh, and one thing i noticed i think you guys missed, was that there is no strap for the sword sheath. as far as i know, thats really the only way to attatch a sheath to your back:). thanks again for all the suggestions.
-
here it is with the strap, i also did some work on the eyes and the lighting.
-
I\'m really no expert at this (heck, I don\'t really count myself as \"good\" ), so I can\'t offer much advice, but one thing I notice right away is that the strap appears to be slapped on -- I can\'t detect any sort of bend in the leather where the strap would wrap over his shoulder.
Other than that, it\'s a pretty nice piece of work :)
-
the strap doesnt really go behind the shoulder, it just bends slightly to go to the sheath where its kind of sowed on with leather or something. i tried to show that it bent with a few curves and some shading, but i guess it isnt obvious enough. thanx for the reply.
oh, and kintall, can i quote you in my sig, i wanna put practice, practice, and sausage lol.
-
I think the strap could look better if you dont show where it connects to the sheath...that will give it a more realistic look of wrapping around the shoulder
-
yeah i agree icefalcon, but i didnt think about that till after i was almost finished, and now im working on a new pic anyway, so ill just let this one be. its not like it was amazing to begin with lol.
-
ill post my newest pick soon, though it wont be finished. it will just have the basic coloring, with no shading. even though there is no shading yet, i think it looks pretty good:)
-
here it is. plz comment and tell me what you think and what i need to fix b4 final version...
pic (http://img278.echo.cx/my.php?image=drawing1psd2jv.jpg)
edit: i orginally posted an unfinished pic here but this is all i get now... still not the final version though
-
I have a few questions.
What do you draw first?
How do you align parts of your picture?
...and finally, \"le crayon ou le stylo?\" (pencil or pen?)
Now the coloring of this pic is fantastic. :)
But, you what needs fixing, not what you did well. :P
I\'m warning you, as an amateur artist myself, I see more flaws than most.
*Gets really picky*
- Nose is off-center.
- Left side of hair doesn\'t quite seem to bend out enough.
- Left shoulder pad shouldn\'t bend inward.
- Left Hand...
- Right elbow\'s joint-bone-thingy comes too soon.
- Similarly, outer right elbow doesn\'t bend sharply enough.
note: When I say left, I mean his right, of course.
Remember practice makes the artist. If you look at the helmet in my thread, you can clearly see it leans rightwards and is too small for his head.
You\'re getting better!
Tip: When drawing that \'pummel\' or whatever it\'s called at the end of the sword, you could use a series of circle selects to more clearly define it\'s shape and edges.
-
thanks monketh, im still getting used to photoshop, so that acounts for problemslike the pummel thing, and, im not really that great of an artist to begin with. a couple of the things you said i think i can fix, like the nose.
i think its too late for me to fix the arm things like the hand and the elbows, and i guess the shoulder armor thing is just a design flaw.
i think i may be able to fix the hair, it will just take some time.
about your questions,
i really dont make the basic shape things most people do, like the circle for the head and stuff. i dont know why, but i just cant do that. ive tried it many times, but my pics always end up with the character either looking really fat or really skinny. but, i guess i pay for not doing it too, because alot of times the arms arent the same length and stuff, and like you said, the facial features get in the wrong spot.
so, really i just start with the jaw, then work my way up to the hair. then, i do basic features of the head. then, i work my way down to the feet. after that, i add in alot of detail. so yeah, my artistic process basically sucks.
pencil or pen:
pencil first. then i scan it onto my comp, and print out a copy. then, i trace over that copy in pen, because i can barely see the lines when i scan in just the pencil, and i dont want to put pen on my original, incase i mess up or something. then, for the details i cant see well, on the copy, i use the orginal as a reference. then i scan the semi-inked (the pen isn\'t really thick enough to be used as my inked version) copy back into my comp and then ink it super-zoomed in on photoshop.
whew, thats more complicated than i thought.
thanks for the help monketh:)

well you gotta start sooner or later, all the greats do it (Netsya Nomura, Satoshi Urushihara, Masamune shirow and the list goes on) once you start doing it you will really notice the difference, I know I ve said it somewhere before on this board but get yourself a copy of \"how to draw manga vol1: compiling characters\" I think it will REALLY help you, you can probably order it from your local comic or book shop its about $40 Aus so it shouldnt be too much where you are
but above alll PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE, its really the only way
anywho keep up the good work
-
aaahh poop... my comp died, like totally, forever!! ahh and im poor too, so it took me forever to save up enough for a new one. but, finally im back, and school lets out in a week, so then work should speed up. and thanks for the comments

So how\'s yours so big?
-
its not anymore i fixed it.
-
He Taurenthefirst, I\'d recomment that you buy yourself a good anatomy book, it\'s really a great help when drawing chars :)....and modelling them ;)
-
yeah i know, i suck lol. im gonna get that book kintall suggested and just keep practicing lol.
-
I have this anatomy book:
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/078948045X/qid=1085523587/sr=8-1/ref=pd_ka_1/102-8400520-7960110?v=glance&s=books&n=507846
And i really like it, lots of very good photo reference. It\'s $27 @ amazon.

woohhoooo, tomarrow is the last day of school!!!!!!!!!!!!!! yyyyyyyyaaaaaaaaayyyyyyy!!!!!!
and to honor this day, i have this:
i did this a while ago, its aragorn from lotr. did this all in pencil, just a sketch w/ some shading.
edit: the new link didnt work all the way but this is the best i got for now...all thats missing is the knees anyway...
-
here is a sketch of my first monster:
monster 1 (http://img264.echo.cx/my.php?image=drawing17nl.jpg)
kinda weird i know.
explanation: its attatched to a rock with its front leg thingys, so this makes it move very slow, but it has a very powerful attack by planting its spikey thing into the ground and smashing stuff with its rock. it can also balance on the rock and stab people with the spike. finally, if it is in dire need of nutrients, it can quickly absorb minerals from the rock, but this will make the rock weak and crumble, causing the creature to have a harder time keeping it balance and losing its ability to smash stuff.
and here is a little something my freind sketched up for me: (as you can tell, he is alot better than me)
wolf thing (http://img264.echo.cx/my.php?image=drawing22kt.jpg)
edit: links fixed
-
The first pic reminds me of HalfLife, scared the hell out of me. :)

...June 8th... ...JUNE 8TH...GAAAHHH!
*ahem* Looks good, did you have a source image?
-
yes i have a source image, it was the front of the video game case for lord of the rings the 2 towers:) you can probably tell that the source only went to about the bottom of the right(well his lefft) arm, cuz from there down the drawing gets worse lol 8o
EDIT: whoooohoooo school is out!!!!!!!!! :]
-
finally!!!!!!! my completly completed drawing if finally completed!!!!!!!!!!! man that took forever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i really like the way it turned out. the first one has darker shadows, i guess to kinda represent a brighter and more focused light source, like a big ball of energy, and the second one has lighter shadows. tell me which one you guys like better, and what else i could have done to make this drawing better :D (i like the second one better)
firnal (http://img278.echo.cx/my.php?image=modifiedpsd8qk.jpg)
edit:
ok all i have left now is one of them, but this is the one i finally picked to be the final version anyway.
-
man its been a long time since ive posted in this thread. cant believe i didnt get any replies from my last pic, was it that bad? or do you guys just not like me?
oh well here\'s some sketches i did while on vacation.
ok well i did have some sketches.... but im having some trouble with upl.mine. but you can expect the sketches as soon as i get them uploaded lol :D

I really liked this picture alot especially the face, but it somehow looks like the hair is cut and paste from another picture i dunno maybe its just my eyesight but it doesn\'t look authentic...still really good!
-
no the hair on that one is what i drew for it. found out that my scanner was broken, probably be long time till more sketches.
-
hey every1 im back if anyone remembers me... ?(
ive been busy alot lately but i have a few new pics... ill also try to repair some of the broken links...
edit:
ok fixed as many links as i could, here is one of the things ive been working on while i was gone:
monsterthingy (http://img278.echo.cx/my.php?image=finishedmonsterjpeg9nv.jpg)
see previous post for explanation and original sketch for this thing :P
and i got a new temporary sig up now too :D
and here\'s the colored version of that pic my freind drew me... i could use some suggestions or comments...
btw anyone have any ideas how i could make the fur/hair look better?
expect sketches soon
-
Cool. As for making the fur more realistic, add more lines and more colors (some shadowing, perhaps). Monochromatic bits look 2D. ;)
A sort of cheap way to add \"fuzzy\" realism to things using Photoshop is to add noise. However, in the long run, things look a lot better when you do them out by hand (airbrushing, pencil, blur, and all the rest of those \"by hand\" tools :P ).
-
thnx for actually commenting chaos!
ive been kinda stuck in progressing my art lately...
i dont have time to read any long guides or tutorials for photoshop or for art in general, so im trying to key in on the things i want to improve :]
my next couple of sketches are going to be some older pics that ive done, but after that hopefully you\'ll see my artwork shift away from the cartoonish style and anime towards more serious realistic pictures(thats what im shooting for)
Edit:
oh btw, i usually do shadows and stuff but i wasn\'t sure whether i should wait to do them till after i figured out how to make the hair look more \"hair-ish\" but now im so tired of looking at that pic that im just gonna let it be.
-
funny fact= check my thread, i used to draw more realistic. now im having fun learning cartoonish :P
me and you are opposites
-
yeah well i got started off with cartoons, back when all the anime games and tv shows were popular in the u.s. (maybe they still are and i just grew out of that age group i dunno, my little cousin likes yu gi oh or whatever its called) and i got sick of it. so now im trying to do some more realish stuff, and im writing a story/book(maybe) and i want to be able to use some of my art for it, but the mood of the story/book(maybe :] ) is definitely not cartoonish... so whatever :P as soon as i can get to my scanner ill have a whole bunch of new sketches.
btw, any1 know of any good photoshop pug-ins(free) that would be useful for the type of art im doing?
i searched on the internet and downloaded about (exactly) 40 ;) but i havnt had time to look through or try them all out (actually none of them  )
p.s. dragon my favorite of yours is the blue klyros :D
edit:
ok here\'s a sketch i did a while back, still cartoonish :D
the left arm looks pretty stupid but other than that i like this one pretty good
(edited and added some more)

edit edit:
OT (please bare with me, im very happy right now :D )
woo, i got the client, finally! wow, never thought that would happen...
so my character will be called Fell Westant, my usual rp name (yes that\'s me John Thazer if you\'re reading this, or other players of chaos wars)
so anyway, i was hoping that my forum name could be changed to that? (i made this one many years ago, and now i hate warcraft lol...)
read somewhere that this only happens for special cases
well i guess that\'s about as likely errr... something unlikely...
but you never know, i mean the client did finally successfully download, and THEN, what\'s more, is it successfully installed! truely amazing!
aww crap that means im a noob now... crud
whew... back on topic :D :
anyway the point of all this is to let my fans (wait, do i have those? ?( ) know that im gonna make some art of my char, but don\'t really know where to start so i could use some ideas... i don\'t really even now what i want my character to be other than i know i want him to be adept in some of the \"ways\"
ugh my brain still hurts from SAT... i guess ill draw a pic of a red way ylian doing something... fireish :]
any suggestions appreciated, im in a creative slump (that\'s what it is called right?) right now
edit edit edit:
ok i guess i wont be fell westant, because first name is already taken... mumble mumble stupid grumble....
edit edit edit edit: (wouldn\'t have to edit so much if you people would comment on my pictures! :( )
anyway, the character above i named rone, and ive now added all the pictures ive ever drawn of him in chronological order (of when i drew them)
and the last one is after i decided to start trying to draw more realistically.
and as promised here is a picture of my character (now known as Felln Westant) doing some thing fire-ish
(http://img222.echo.cx/img222/2455/fellnwestant6vc.png)
ill get some more sketches up soon.
-
alright well that post was getting too long and complicated to edit, but here are some pics of firnal (the same charachter i colored in previous posts that has blonde hair)
they are posted in chronological order of when i drew them (don\'t forget the check out the linked one at the bottom 8) )
this is the very first picture i drew of this charachter. i know it sucks, i just posted it to show my progress
(http://img180.echo.cx/img180/6215/firnal9sj.png)
i drew this one after i drew the one that i colored in the earlier posts. i like this one pretty good, except for his face.
he is just riding on some horse-ish thing. i dont really know alot about how horses run, or how you sit on them :D so this one kinda sucks too.
this is my latest one (after my realism movement ;) )
did it just a couple days ago, i really like how this turned out, definitely one of my favorite sketches ive done. has a little violence in it, so ill just post a link.
firnal vs. monsters (http://img180.echo.cx/my.php?image=firnal57sl.png)
-
sorry for triple post but like a said before the first post was too complicated and long, and now for some reason it won\'t let me edit my second post... maybe because message length is too long?
ok well i don\'t really know why i\'m posting these here anyway since obviously no one looks at them...
i want to get better as an artist, but i guess since no one posts any suggestions here on how to make my pictures better they are already perfect.
i try to suggest things to myself but everyone knows that your perspective is skewed when you judge your own work... so that never really helps all that much (although it does help a little...)
i guess i could get my real life friends to help me, but they are all fan-art-retarded...
i guess im doomed to suck forever...
oh well... here are most of the monsters ive done relatively recently
this is your typical horse-cow mix, and firnal can be seen riding one in the posts above
(http://img69.echo.cx/img69/5461/ullasi7af.png)
this is sylvath... he killed firnal\'s (pictured above) father arad (to be posted soon)... so firnal got mad and killed him back and stole his sword.
this is a monster roughly based on my dog (a chinese pug named Woody!), after he has gone on a diet and taken steroids and grown some really big claws and teeth
(http://img69.echo.cx/img69/6210/dogmonster1jt.png)
this is... ok im not sure yet what it is... debating between reptilian bird and fish or maybe even amphibious bird... what do you think?
body sized and shaped like a frog, but is a mammal... runs like a great cat... maybe a cheetah...
definitely a bird
(http://img300.echo.cx/img300/5651/bird1fb.png)
this was my interpretation of gollum before the movies came out, but i never finished it till after i saw the movies... and of course that changed how i saw him so i just changed this into a monster and went crazy on his right hand... i still like the way it turned out though...
a tree. not a monster, but oh well, it\'s not like anyone is gonna look at this anyway...
-
your not doomed to suck forever.
Dont even make me get up my old stuff ;)

Your art is not bad! you just need practice. dont worry about iit :)
-
You should crop your pictures to remove all that white as it takes up a lot of room and makes the pictures hard to see because of the size.
Keep up practicing, search around some places, I hope to see you get really good some day. ;)
-
well atleast i\'m finally geting some feed back!
thx guys.
it would be nice though for specific things in my drawings that you like or dislike. tutuorials are always too vague for me.
@crimsonsky-yeah i\'m practicing, but it seems like i make the same mistakes over and over, because i don\'t recognize them, and yeah i do try to crop my pics but towards the end i was getting tired so i just left them how they were.
i\'ll have some more sketches up soon... of some of the weapons ive done and of some other guys that are on firnal\'s side in my story.
edit:
ok here\'s some weapons ive done: (btw there are two jokes (ok not jokes since they aren\'t really funny)hidden in two of these drawings... and if you find them... well you can be really proud of yourself)
sorry about the light lines... my scanner sucks and it\'s kinda hard to trace over the lines with a darker pencil for the fine lines in most of my weapons...
this was arad\'s sword (firnal\'s father). it was stolen by sylvath (see above) and then firnal killed sylvath and reclaimed it.
this is some evil guy\'s sword (don\'t know who yet)
it is two swords normally for combat, but they can be combined for ceremonial purposes
(http://img293.echo.cx/img293/4073/badguyssword0lv.png)
this is rone\'s huge battle axe thing (can be seen above)
this is a standard issue short sword for the army rone is a part of.
this is firnal\'s light sword he used before he killed sylvath
(http://img293.echo.cx/img293/6331/firnalslightsword9hk.png)
edit edit: come on people, please give me suggestions, or post specific things that you like or don\'t like in my drawings! also, don\'t be afraid to go back to my older drawings, since no one ever commented on those either... and i would really like to improve my style... anyway, here is another picture of Felln Westant doing something...magical...*sparks fly*
oooooo 8o
anyway, i like how this one turned out except for the shoes... they look stupid... so suggestions please?
edit edit edit:
come on people will it make your lives so difficult to look at one of my pictures and think to yourself \"wow, that part there looks stupid. maybe i\'ll spend 15 whole seconds and type up a suggestion to help him get better.\"
would that really be so difficult?
or is the reason no one is posting because they just see there are no new posts, so they assume there is nothing new, so they don\'t even look? maybe i should stop editing and just double post...
anyway, here are some pictures of the forces of good in firnal\'s universe:
firnal\'s father, arad.
firnal\'s friend and right hand man, edasan.

edit edit edit edit:
could someone post a link for some references for medieval/fantasy style shoes or boots?
all the shoes i draw look kinda like goofy socks...
anyway, i looked in all the current threads there are that have reference links, and i searched for about 15 minutes on google and yahoo, but no avail...
so anyway, this would be very helpful
-
Okay, my main beef I have is with your Final Fantasy bigass swords.
Bastardswords are fine. It\'s just when they\'re almost as thick as they are long that it starts to annoy me. I understand that doesn\'t help your with your drawing, but I\'m just bitter that way :D
For those shoes, I think your wizard guy would look good in boots. I don\'t know if that\'s totally acurrate medival, but it would look cool. Give him boots with a heel!
-
there is really just one big sword but it keeps appearing in alot of my drawings :D (well, there is one other one too, forgot about it, but it only shows up once. the rest are normal, and one is a battle axe, not sure if you thought it was a sword.
but yeah i created the sword design like 4 years ago during my anime phase, and it became a part of that character. but some of my other characters have changed completely over the years, and that sword is starting to look kinda cheesy, so i\'ll change it up.
shoes... well i still haven\'t found any references to help me with... but i\'ve been thinking and i think i might dig up neverwinter nights and look at some of the icons for shoes. from what i remember the icons were pretty detailed, and they may help me get down some of the basics. anyway, more sketches in about half an hour once i upload them.
-
im going to be honest. you really need to think about the result you want before you just pump out a drawing. for example try to observe real things and get your ideas from those. look at your arms for instance, the muscles are ludacris: there are like 15 biceps and triceps. look at you mom or dads or anybodys arm and think of what ot looks like and draw it. another thing when you draw a pose, try to make that pose with your own body and see if its even possible. also think about proportions. your arms come about half way down your thigh and your legs are about half of the whole length of your body including the head.
im telling you this for your own benifit, im not trying to be mean. besides your work isnt horrible or anything. keep practing but with each picture you draw try to improve on something. dont just try to get it finished.
-
yes the biceps/triceps thing is another horrible result of anime...
hard to break old habits as they say (they do say that, right?), but i\'m trying to move away from them. for example, did this a few days ago. only one bicep per arm :D
(http://img269.echo.cx/img269/8846/firnaltraining6ke.png)
this is firnal training (yes without some dumb teacher. all by himself. without having to pay someone :D )
i don\'t really like the pose, and the face looks funny to me, can\'t quite place it though. but like i said before, i think my anatomy is much better in this one.
oh, btw, yeah i started doing the thing you said gentar about looking at my own body for my drawings recently, especially for the hands. like the right hand on the guy above.
but anyway, thanks for the suggestions, i\'ll try to work on them.
-
That one has BAD pose. it honestly looks like he is kicking himself in the nuts. you cant make a pose like that IRL. i think his legs are too long. if you were to make him stand up, his head would be tiny in comparison to his body.
-
yeah, it was supposed to look like he was kneeling on one knee kinda... didn\'t turn out right. i think the shin on the left leg might be too long, but i\'m sure the left thigh is the right length, because when i put my leg out like that, my knee goes just past my elbow. the right leg is kinda hard to tell for the length to me, because like you said that part of the pose is all messed up.
here is a picture with the other big sword i was talking about. i hate these swords, they look like something i would have drawn when i was 5. oh well, i like the rest of the picture, except for the spikes on the armor on the legs.

edit:
here are some old pics of some soldiers.
other than the awkward looking armor on the knees and elbows i like this one alot.
i like this one except for the wierd way he\'s holding the axe. oh well, this one is really old.
edit:
o.k. well here are two more that i did very recently.
i\'m very proud of this first one, best one i\'ve done in a while i think. i know, the pose is sort of cliche, but my creativity is running low these days...
this one... well the pose didn\'t quite turn out how i wanted it to to say the least... oh well, i like the look of the face, and the sword looks pretty good too.

I honestly expected a bannana peel to be flying away from him in the last picture :D

Cool stuff, I can tell your improving through your drawings, but maybe a new techniwue may help...
Try this, sketch out your drawing like so:
http://www.geocities.com/virsagacomics/WRPPlaneshiftGiltanasSketch.jpg (http://www.geocities.com/virsagacomics/WRPPlaneshiftGiltanasSketch.jpg)
Mess around with the pencil, erase, fix, ect. Once you get something your satisfied with, ink it and remove the pencil work:
http://www.geocities.com/virsagacomics/WRPPlaneshiftGiltanas.jpg (http://www.geocities.com/virsagacomics/WRPPlaneshiftGiltanas.jpg)
I hope that helped, their are different ways artists do this. Just use whatever methods you find useful ;) .
-
thanks for the encouragement and suggestions kang.
i\'ve been working on the whole sketch lightly and erase, and all the skeleton stick figures and basic shapes and stuff, things i used to never do, and i must say, it is helping. i just got back from vacation in case anyone didn\'t know, and i didn\'t have much time to draw while i was gone (you can read about this, aswell as see some of my other art in this thread (http://www.planeshift3d.com/wbboard/thread.php?threadid=17358&boardid=19&styleid=4&sid=3f9faf6b0d35ec4c3d5b20e210024859) )
however, i have been working on my proportions, something that i am very bad at. the arms always end up the wrong length or the head ends up too big or too small or whatever, so i used my own body as a model.
using my body for every single measurement, i came up with this framework for my next picture:
however, too me, this doesn\'t look right. are the arms too short? or are the legs too long? or am i just seeing things? i checked this over and over again, and this is definitley scaled very closely to my own body. do i just have a funny shaped body :D ? i would really like some feedback for this, because if this is wrong, i\'m gonna have to find someone else and measure them :P
-
ahhh!! your people are always so lanky and skinny and their legs look like twigs. i wrote before giving you some ips and i see youve followed them somewhat so here is my next one. make your people look stockier and heavier remember what i said. the legs should account for about half of the total length of the body, head included, and the arms a little bit past the middle of the hips. and your arm cannot bend in the middle of the bicep which yours does but whatever. keep it up
-
ok thanks gentar, from what you said i take it the legs are way to long (i guess that\'s one reason i have so much trouble with proportion, my own body isn\'t even right :D . i\'ll fix it soon i hope, working on something else right now, but i\'ll probably finish it today.
also, as zaxim was complaining about the huge swords (i don\'t like them either actually) i have been working on some new ones to replace them.
to replace the big green one that\'s in that one colored picture (and also appears in many other pictures) i have done this (don\'t worry about some of the lines not being straight, in any final picture they would be):
however, i wanted to try some other looks, so here are a few alternate hilts (the blade would be the same)
which one do you guys think is the best looking? don\'t worry about \"well what style are you going for?\" just say which one you like best, or give things you like or dislike about them, so i can fix them.
anyway, here they are
(http://img293.imageshack.us/img293/318/alternatehilts2uh.png)
edit:
well, here\'s my newest pic, just did this today. i guess it is some sort of dwarf with a birth defect... mutated chromosomes or something... maybe he grew up near a toxic waste dump :D now he\'s a pow
(yes the huge forearms are intentional 8o )
(http://img359.imageshack.us/img359/2955/mutateddwarf2yu.th.png) (http://img359.imageshack.us/my.php?image=mutateddwarf2yu.png)
and here is my first attempt at an enki. it\'s not finished, and i can\'t decide whether he should be throwing a shuriken after a quick spin like in this picture:
(http://img359.imageshack.us/img359/5504/enki6ly.th.png) (http://img359.imageshack.us/my.php?image=enki6ly.png)
or flipped vertically and scaling a tall building with a rope like in this one (yay ms paint!):
(http://img359.imageshack.us/img359/3122/enki20ea.th.png) (http://img359.imageshack.us/my.php?image=enki20ea.png)
opinions?
-
Thank god your getting rid of the swords.
I especially like the first new sword, it looks very elvish and woodsy.
-
yes that is the one i finally chose as the best.
well, here is my first attempt at a klyros.
(http://img152.imageshack.us/img152/1583/klyros15iw.th.png) (http://img152.imageshack.us/my.php?image=klyros15iw.png)
comments?
still can\'t decide what to do with that enki. opinions welcome.
edit:
not exactly sure what this is... i just started drawing and this came out... the only thing i really know about it is that it is yawning.
(http://img236.imageshack.us/img236/328/athing3hs.th.png) (http://img236.imageshack.us/my.php?image=athing3hs.png)
-
The Klyros is great! :D
The monster thingy I would like to see in PS... A bit changed though... instead of having a \"nose\" so big and a mouth the nose and the mouth could be united and mouth could be a cilinder with a hole in the front, no way to close the mouth... I would love to see something like that to ride or to slay in PS... if it was a ridable thingy I would have one... if it was to slay I would laugh everytime I saw it :D oh by the way can you make something like that?
-
Nice work Tauren :D
I think maybe the Klyros needs a little thicker legs, but the upper body looks good, and i love the wings :D
-
thanks for the comments, i\'ve been moving into my dorm lately so i haven\'t done much lately in the ways of art, glad you like the klyros, i made the legs then because i picture klyros to be more agile than strong, although i guess they could use a little thickening up.
the monsterthingy... yeah ill try to do what your saying if i understand you correctly... do you mean sort of like a straw for the mouth? like an insect or something? i\'ll see what i can do if i ever get time...
btw, i finished the enki, i didn\'t shade it, i just made some markings for the fur, i might go back later and try to add some shadows, but i\'m not sure if that will mess up how the fur looks...
anyway, here it is.
(http://img363.imageshack.us/img363/5329/enkifinished3ji.th.png) (http://img363.imageshack.us/my.php?image=enkifinished3ji.png)
edit:
wow the fan art forums are pretty dead these days... only like 3 or 4 people ever posting anything anymore it seems...
anyway, here is a fight scene i did a few days ago between a kran and a ynnwn.
(http://img384.imageshack.us/img384/2637/kranvsynnwn9ra.th.png) (http://img384.imageshack.us/my.php?image=kranvsynnwn9ra.png)
-
Yeah! The last fight scene is quite good, I see definite improvement over time. :D
Heres a very nice tut on how to draw feet as yours are still a little... yeah. :D http://www.polykarbon.com/tutorials/feet/foot.htm
Keep up the good work! Its getting better, I can definitely see improvment through the topic.
-
woooh! finally some help with feet! thanks for the complements too by the way. more stuff will hopefully be up soon.

AS has already been stated, you\'re making improvements throughout the thread. All I can say is practice when ever you can, if you really want to progress. Take a small notepad with you and sketch at the bus stop, or on your lunch, when ever. Draw from life, not from your head. I was drawing better when I was 14 because that\'s what I did. I haven\'t done art in a long time, and you can get rusty, but it does come back with practice. Use reference, and after awhile you won\'t need it because you\'ll have studied it enough. (Always good to have though) Human anatomy is a hard subject, get a few books on it. There\'s tons of drawing books that are cheap. Keep using good technique, the manequins work good. Don\'t over work any one part of an image, build up the whole piece equally or you might lose scale. When you can get the whole image to read, then you can start adding in finer details. If you want to get into more photorealistic drawing, use lines as reference, but remember objects arn\'t flat, shade them and work with different values. In the end the less lines you\'ve got the more beleiveable they\'ll be. That\'s probably a few steps off though. Oh, and use a ruler, and study perspective. Can\'t go wrong with those too. Oh, and try landscapes... That was a huge flaw I developed when I started drawing, only focusing on pin-ups and armor, etc. I could draw a mean skull, but no place to put it.
-
thanks for the suggestions malloc, i am planning to get a small manequine of sorts to help me out,
and about the landscape thing, i\'ve been working on that but as of yet i haven\'t come up with anything interesting or cool enough to add, but i have been practicing it so hopefully soon we will see some of that in my art.
