it all started with astro boy then lots of artists jump on to the band wagon
so now we are stuck with *shudders* Gundam (add strange series title here) and FF (that wasnt to bad infact it was good )
so i just want to know why people like these big eyes small mouth stuff and not the 80 table top game stuff where people have actual proportioned faces !

Ever seen Naruto? I think people like it because it just looks cool.. i have been thinking about this for a long time.. Actually, if you look at the faces and other proportions, they are just plain wrong.. but perhaps because of the slick and streched view, we like it ^^

I think its a popular style for two reasons
the first and foremost being Fashon, in that currently its quite a large pop culture source
secondly, the style: Some of that is the classic \"big eyes\" composition, whilst this characteristic is not as all pervasive as most beleive, it is a somewhat integral part in what is recognised by the west as its most distiguishing feature, and when one considers that in all facial expression the eyes are what show 80-90% of the emotion, not surpising when you consider that young babies whilst still developing their sensory abilitys first visualy recognise their parents/carers by their eyes
and some of the style is in not only the visual direction but also in the writing style. What with most stories being culturaly influenced it stands to reason then that if a story is written from a different cultural perspective it will have elements both exiting and unseen in the foreign cultures it is introduced to .
or you know, it could just be me...

NA iam suffering form the same delusions to i like jap anime but i also like the US Comics it seems that even forgien artists are doing manga

The show \"SD Gundam\" (where SD stands for \"Super-deformed\" ), is a mockery of all things Gundam. Its creator should be placed in a room with a certain member of planeshift whose name starts with an \"A\" for all eternity.
The other gundam series on CN is \"Gundam SEED\", which I don\'t know much about. I saw some last night and the main character (who is male) looks like a girl... ?(
I personally also like the more serious animation styles as well. I also enjoy the more serious and political plots.

I would disagree. I personally am not attracted to the anime style (although I haven\'t spent much time looking) but I am certain that it has artistic merit- if not for the sheer volume, then because it obviously it has its origins as a highly stylized portrayal of characters and emotion.

Please avoid use of the term \'Jap\' there are those who take offence.
The style of large eyes and more caucasion skin was favoured in early comics throughout japan, I have an art project on it ill see if i can find it.
Those who say they hate \'all anime\' or like \'all anime\' are usually bigots. It is effectively the same as saying \'I hate/like all cartoons\' from Japan. The styles are varied and diverse between them.

whell i like anime 4 its intelectually stimulating storys
unlike US sitcoms that force the SAME RETARDED *beep* DOWN YR THROAT ALL DAY LONG(languaged edited here)
& plus, im the kinda guy that likes uniq things, including animation styles, & so far, i have not seen ANY animetion style quite like anime
(btw, did u know that the \"big eye\" style came from disney?)

Osamu Tezuka used the detailed eyes before Disney in an attempt to portray emotion.
Disney influenced his later chibi style with the excessively large eyes.
Again not all anime have interlectually stimulating stories or even good animation styles. Each piece of work should be considered different.

true- the ONLY requirements neccisary 2 make it Anime is:
1: it be animated
2: it be from japan
though MOST anime (atleast most the anime ive seen) is quite intelegent

I\'m not a huge anime fan and mostly because of the whole exaggerated expressions. But there is a lot of good serious anime out there. But as I said I don\'t care much for the big eyed, small mouth stuff.
My likes and dislikes are very much the same as Cyrandir\'s. I made sure I watched every episode of WHR. although I do like Trigun I think it would be a much better anime if it were more serious.
But Gundam and DBZ are definently on my hate list.

I love the more epic and serious type of Manga. \"Princess Mononoke\" (by Hayao Miyazaki) is one of my personal Anime favourites, not to mention his masterpiece \"Spirited away\" (the japanese uncut version). \"Cowboy bebop\" and \"Akira\" is good too.
I also love Manga-comics. Fantasy Realms is my personal favourite, and then there is \"Blade of the Immortal\", \"GTO\" and \"RPG world\" (the last one is a very funny Parody of Final Fantasy 7. It\'s free to read online, so if you havn\'t read it yet, I suggest you do :) )

A lot of the anime that gets played on TV gets butchered anyway, at least here. Generally dubbing is done poorly and a lot of stuff is cut out to make it for a younger audience.
Again, like most people mentioned, not all of the art style is the same, some is very cartoonish and \"basic\" drawing, where as some anime is highly detailed.
Since there is so many different types of anime out there, I have always been able to show people at least one anime that they like (even for those who think all anime sucks because all they have ever seen of anime is pokemon & DBZ *shudder*).
The thing that annoys me though is that now some north american companies are starting to use the same art style since anime is becoming mainstream and they will just butcher it further.

i mean, most company heads will KILL their kids 2 get a free buck so im not very surprized that these companies have been butchering anime 4 some free $$$
& also, i hate poor dubbing, though i does have a kinda, natural aspect 2 it, so (note 2 ALL these dubbing studios) i think they shoud dub anime well, after all, all of us rnt \"lowest common demonator\" ppl right?
& 4 all they know, they could make even MORE $$$
