330 tris
-
Not bad..not bad at all
-
played around with some reflection maps and so i thought i shoud post some eyecandy ;)
-
nice... really nice :)
-
yucky texture.
-
Looks great!
-
Much better than your first pic. The blade texture is fine, simple, but it looks good. The hilt/grip could use a little work though. Looks pretty good to me, nice ;)
-
well that was before i started painting the texture :D
here is the begining of the real texture
(http://silverwolf.zapto.org/silverwolf/wip/katana04.jpg)
also i changed the polys to 328 while adding more detail :)
plus i did fix so the tip are less pointy and more katana like
-
its a lovely lil Katana, I think they need a slightly bend to them
its still a lovely swordy wordy though:)
-
finished the blade texture hope you like it :)
-
coming along nicely, I\'l just take this moment to be a pedantic annoying nitpicker and say that the blades curve starts in the middle and increases slightly the closer it gets to the end, the blade is still strieght but hey :)
I really do like it
also dont forget to detail the Tsuba (handguard)
and the detail on the handle is important too, this may give you a more practical standpoint to work from :)
thus ends my pedantic nitpicking
your doing good work, keep it up :)
-
ok i looked at my ref pic for the bend not only the leght ratios as before unfortunately i had to add one cross section to the blade to keep it from looking blocky so now its at 338 tris
(http://silverwolf.zapto.org/silverwolf/wip/katana06.JPG)
ok back to the texture again :)
-
Wow! You\'re good at this, REALLY good. The texture of the blade is nicely done (altough, in my own humble opinion, maybe it\'s a bit too \"rusty\"). So, you only need to put some texture on the handle and you\'re done. Go you!
-
I agree about the hilt needing some detail, a katana or wakazashi just isn\'t the same without at least having the wrap intact, although most likely no one will notice it in game...
hehe, I screwed up, I\'ve been wondering for a while if my wakazashi is real or decorative, so when I saw that diagram I took it apart... good news, it\'s real, including that rubbery ray skin stuff... bad news... I can\'t get it back together....
-
I\'m a lamen when it comes to modelling, but what about antialiasing the blade? The edges seem a little rough-cut.
Other then that - great work, really nice to look at :)
-
i can\'t realy figure out how it is wraped around so can anybody tell me if i should go with the left or the right wrapping
(http://silverwolf.zapto.org/silverwolf/wip/katana07.JPG)
-
played around with some higher poly couts while trying to figure it out.
no textures on this one
(http://silverwolf.zapto.org/silverwolf/wip/katana08.jpg)
43k polys :p
will get back to the texture tomorrow. right now i need some sleep
-
NOW it\'s looking pretty sweet, the curve is just right, the wrap looks awesome. the handguard is rough but believeable. if you brought back the textures and gave the cutting edge the jagged burnish it would be near perfect.
-
Yup, its lookin good :D Keep it up
-
Well, I am probably saying this for nothing, but unless you have the blade and the actual handle as two seperate 3D objects, you might have to UV map the whole model and texture the thing in Photoshop to get that graphic on the handle.
-
that is looking lovely, maybe yo should make a Sheath to go with it?
good stuff :)
-
did some work at the handle texture
(http://silverwolf.zapto.org/silverwolf/wip/katana09.JPG)
-
Looking good, but there is really not much definition of where one side of the wrap starts and the other ends... like a line or something to define where the sides of the wrap are.
-
(http://silverwolf.zapto.org/silverwolf/wip/katana10.jpg)
-
There we go. Much better ;)
-
Love what you have done. Although the blade still seems a little off to me. Im not sure if this is possible but if you add a very, very light curve from the hilt or 1/4 down the blade to the tip it will look a little better. Or you could even have a completely straight blade. If you do a google search for the Kill Bill Sword then you may be able to use that as a reference. Some katanas also have a flat point.
If you add some fine threading, wrapping around, to the handle underneath the red binding it may give it that little bit extra.
Example of flat point.
*EDIT* Just looked at it again and its possible that the end of the blade looks wider than the blade near the hilt.
-
Very neatly done, I\'d say this is at least game-quality, but that remains to be seen until the release of CB. ;)
-
close to finished :D
(http://silverwolf.zapto.org/silverwolf/wip/katana12.jpg)
-
......thats looking pritty damn good. i like it much better than your long sword, mainly cause i love katanas/samurai swords
-
just so you know, with the flat point it\'s not actually a katana. it\'s a special type of sword that was used exclusively by northern samurai. read that a few years ago in a japanese history book the japanese name for it is difficult to remember, but it literally translates to sword of the samurai.
-
That sword is freakin beautiful, Fred!
-
tats a lovely lil katana youve got there, whats next may I ask?
-
i think i will do this katana that i drew during math class today next
(http://silverwolf.zapto.org/silverwolf/wipkatana2concept.JPG) longer handle though
-
I must also say that this is a great model. Looking at this and reading the comments of everyone else made me go pull out my 2nd Ed. D&D Ninja Handbook to refresh my memory. Perhaps as your next project, or as a continuation of this one, you could make a Wakizashi to go with the Katana... would make a great dual-wield combination. I will quote from the Ninja Hanbook:
This is a short sword, similar in design and construction to the katana. Like the katana, the wakizashi may be named for some deed or event. It holds almost as important a place in the samurai\'s honor as his katana. Those rules and guidelines concerning the katana and its care also apply the the wakizashi when it is part of a matched set.
The wakizashi and the katana are normally worn as a pair by samurai characters. The pair is known as daisho, or \"long and short.\" In many lands, the two-weapon combination is a sign of samurai status. Anyone other than a samurai who wears the long and short swords together is subject to arrest or immediate execution.
It would be great to have a longer, sligtly more curved wakizashi to go with your beautiful katana. It would be so badass to have a ninja set like that!
Thanks for the great model, and maybe we can see a matching wakizashi sometime!?!
-
yes ofcource i could make a wakizashi it would only take a few minutes as all there is to it is some scaling of the length
-
fininished the modeling of the second katana
(http://silverwolf.zapto.org/silverwolf/wip/katana201.jpg)

I did some reading and it seemed to me that the blade shape was influenced by the era or period. While its quite possible that the region dictated the shape also it seemed to make more sense that the period was more of a factor. The katana was created as a result of changed military tactics.
-
i made some wakizashi\'s to match the katanas.
i have some scabbards ready to i just need to fininsh the textures but i done think that the game supports sheathing of the weapons.
i will perhaps do one more katana then i will do something else what that is i still have to figgure out

Wow!!! These are amazing, both the Longsword and the Katanas, they are realy good, well done. You should be on the PS modeling team, if you\'re not allready ;) . What did you use to make them?

Good work, There beautyfull!

-
Can\'t you just feel the STEEL!? I know I can :D
they look great Fredrik :)
-
ok i will be posting these after i fix the smothing groups on them that should only take a few minutes a piece
(http://silverwolf.zapto.org/silverwolf/wip/allkatanas2.JPG)
lowest quality at the botom and more stronger/rarer katans at the top is what i tought :)
-
WOW!!! I have to say that I love these swords!! And thank you for the wakizashi addition too :D I think I like the grey wrapping the best, and the darker steel. the black guard is sweet too... Just playing with color combinations in my mind :D Thank you so much for these EXCELLENT models. As everyone else has said, join the team already!
-
My only complaint would be that those blades with darker metel would look better with...lighter metel. Steel isn\'t that dark is it?

it depends on the grade of steel.
ok, the long explaination....
steel is iron.
when you remove the impurities from iron, through the smelting process, you create steel. low grade steel is darker. it is harder than high grade steel, yet more brittle, good high grade steel is softer, yet will not snap when it is bent, it will, rather, bend and whip back into position when released. ever heard of spring grade steel?
anyway, to be technical, no a katana normally wouldn\'t be that dark, unless it was low quality workmanship. but that doesn\'t mean that it\'s not more aethetically pleasing to some people.
edit: almost forgot, steel, before tempering, can be dyed a darker tint. I had nearly forgotten about gun barrel tinting in the wars(gunmetal blueing technique), also, ninja once dyed their blades so that they would be less noticable in the dark
-
Id personally prefer a high grade steel katana that is highly polished and silver in appearance. So when light hits it, it glistens.
-
Ah, I see, thanks for clearing that up tyger. Well, then I think it would look better with high-grade steel, but do what you like, call it tinted steel if you want.
-
I would like to see that swords in-game :P
-
Oooooh those look really SWEET! I sure hope they make it in-game in some version of PS, it would be a nice kind of reward for your work, don\'t you think?
-
Grymmt bra katanas! De ?r riktigt vackra, kanske en naganita ?r en id? till ett n?sta projekt? Du f?rresten, ?r du med i n?got gille? Kezuke-klanen tar g?rna emot dig!
