Title: does this game offer anything for people like me?
Post by: ouch on May 06, 2004, 06:33:40 pm
I hate swords, magic, orcs, and all that other nonsense.

So I was wondering is there anything here for me? I mean is there (or going to be) an exellent buisness model? like can you open up buisnesses and sell mined mineralls or other items?

can you hire NPC\'s to do your bidding?

can your character breakdance or something?

just something besides a random number generator like most every other rpg ever made. I can\'t stand swinging my weapon through a guys head and not have it do anything because the computer thinks I don\'t have enough experience to swing my weapon through a guys head, even though I just did it.

PlaneShift is currently nothing more than a pre-alpha Tech Demo. The current version doesn\'t even have combat/monsters. :) What you\'re asking are questions best suited for a much later version of the game.

The game will most likely have a working tradeskill setup in the future (near or far future is still uncertain), so if you have the patience it takes to be a part of this community till then, by all means, settle down :)

Mogura:
I realize the game is in a very early alpha stage right now. that\'s one of the reasons why I spoke up. the reason for unreal tournament\'s success is it\'s wide range of apeal. and I would imagine that an mmo game will need as many people as it can grab a hold of to be successfull. and as of the features they talk about on the site it looks quite boreing from my perspective. I wouldn\'t even of bothered posting if I didn\'t see that this mmorpg game was free to play. I support anything that goes against all the pay to play mmo\'s out there.

from what I understand this game is mainly going to be targeting role players. If you are a person who enjoys playing a role then yes there will be something for you, if you dont then i recomend taking a look at the different job classes and seeing if there is something of interest to you.  I\'m sure that this game will be big enough to have something for most people.

err actually...It\'s a fact that most people prefer the fantasy setting in an mmorpg. But it;s all a matter of opinion.

Oh I wouldn\'t say that.. Sci-fi is an awesome setting for mmorpgs too, just take a look at Anarchy and the number of players and supporters that game has :)

ouch: This was, is, and always will be, a Fantasy MMORPG. PlaneShift revolves around a Medieval setting of magic, swords, elves, and everything else I\'m sure you hate. :P If you\'re looking for a Futuristic setting, as Xalthar said, perhaps Anarchy Online or Savage Eden or Planetscape is the MMORPG for you.

You may find the current setting boring, but I don\'t think the devs are going to throw away 3 whole years of work and completely change the direction of the game for you. :) Sorry.

Unlike what some people thought because of that April Fool\'s joke  :D

Seriously though... the fantasy setting appeals to many players, and ouch, I\'m sure that if you tried it a little you would come to love it.

It seems that the stated intent of the developers is to create more than just \"hack \'n\' slash\".  The intent (I think) is to have a political system, as well as characters running businesses.  However, these things are a lot harder to \"get right\" than orc-bashing, and you\'ll be surrounded by people who think their Sword of Deathness +3 is the coolest thing in the entire world :)

I\'d encourage you to stick around and see what develops, maybe take a look at the Wish List (ignoring most of it) but if there\'s something specific you\'d like, post about it.

A non-fatasy RPG... does they even exist?

It would more become a soap :/

here\'s my semi-serious take on your question:

there are swords in PlaneShift - you can see experienced players walking around with them (not able to use they yet) ...but that won\'t be all ..also you can see experienced players with beer-bugs too :]

magic is pretty advanced in PlaneShift - it\'s based on glyphs that you put together to form a spell ...and there\'s six ways of magic (you really should read the setting section on the homepage) ...in the next release there you\'ll see the magic system in its full beaut :]

since the devs prohibeted goblins, horses  and most other clich? things i think there\'s little to no chance you\'ll see an orc here

i think there was already some talk about being able to buy an NPC army

oh, hell yea ...if you want to play a merchant, blacksmith, alchemist, farmer or any other hard-core \"peaceful\" role, you\'re more then welcome here!! ...we have them all, plus a bag of chips :)) ...and, yea, you will be able to make your own shop, including the house, hiring workers (players or NPC), buying your stash, etc. etc. ...you might want a specialised lad (maybe a specialised pharmacist with a hint of green magic lore to make healing spells, for example)

no, really, read the \"setting\" and \"player guide\" sections on the homepage - i think you\'ll love it :]

of course there do ...that\'s why fantasy RPG\'s are called FRP - Fanrasy Role Playing (game)

there used to be quite a lot of RPGs in the past where the setting wasn\'t fantasy-ish (elves, dwarves, etc.) ...strictly looking a futuristic or a medievil RPG isn\'t an FRP
...and there\'s still some cyberpunk ones alive today :)

YOu have to remember, RPGs probobly started as a bunch of people pretending to be knights and what-not and \'attacking\' eachother, from this, rules developed and pen and paper RPG\'s came about... graphical RPG\'s were originally jsut graphical representations of pen and paper RPGs... even now, off the top of my head, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and Neverwinter Knights use the d20 system (a dice rolling system) from Dungeons and Dragons in the background to decide what the outcomes of your actions would be... pretend there are little elves living in the computer rolling dice for you :P The point is, in a pen and paper RPG, you might declare your attack and throw a die, your opponent would defend by throwing another die, and if your roll was higher than his, you\'d land the attack for maybe the differance of the dice, if his was higher, he\'d successfully block the attack... this is basically what happens behind the scenes in an RPG.

...And let\'s not forget adventurous alchemists, hm? ^^

Anyway, the motto of PS is \"A universe is not enough\", meaning there will be some way to travel between planes.

I do not see why, somewhere in the very distant future, the Devs cannot make a Sci-fi world based in another plane. But let\'s just get the basics first. That means swords and magic.

Well the sci-fi world would come after the surface. But it might come.
