Title: Dreaming (2D world)
Post by: Toadhead on May 10, 2004, 09:07:03 pm
I realy like 2D MMORPG\'s and the best would be an Planeshift in 2D :P:P:P
But that will probably not come.. so what about the following:

In the game you will be able to \"dream\", you can go to inns and sleep there, than you will be able to dream.

When you dream you\'ll be in a new world, this world will be 2D, you walk as a 2D character etc. but you will still have your weapons... It\'s a sort of Zelda world were you can do various things :)

Later people will learn you how to get in specials world while dreaming, on this way you can get in places. When you find weapons in these dreams you\'ll be able to pick them up later in a the \"dreamhouse\" or sometihng lol :P

...
...

Ok, I know that you think i\'s sucks, but maybe is you change some tihngs it would be nice :P

Or just about the idea of 2D in the 3D PS in general, you could just make some 2D dungeon\'s or something , I think it would be cool  :P

o_0 WOW! i like the idea! some sort of little game inside PS, for 2d graphs..

also to be included with the jail thingy :) you can play some games while in jail..
but the concept of 2d in 3d is really interesting.. and maybe have a quest of some sort in the dream.. in short: i vote yes! ;)

well.. I think it\'s an original idea but hard to make :/

Anyway Planeshift is hard enough to make..i mean the devs are profs so it won\'t be a problem I think..

well.. how do you mean mini-games while you\'re in jail?
You mean that you can sleep than and than get in the new world lol..
Maybe thats just a good idea.. one realy world (3D) and one dream world. You can meat others in this dream world and maybe even try to get your selve out the jail when you\'re in the dream world..

I dunno..

but I think it would be cool :)

Great idea, it even solves the problem of sleeping.
Sleeping raises your HP, Mp, etc, but it got a con - sitting infront of the comp watching your char sleeping.
A dream world solves that problem.

This 2D dream world should be very abstract, and have weird things everywhere (kinda like the game Alice, only not horror-ish).

There is one problem though... I think it\'ll require another engine... But I don\'t know much about engines, and especially not about CS, maybe it could support it...

i mean if you go to jail (and i think a lot of people will ;)) you just stand there and get bored.. (or maybe talk your way out but that is another idea ;)) so, to still keep people on PS there should be a little game like cards or something :) so maybe perhaps put a magic book there, where people can play the 2d world game :) this way you might even have fun going to jail :D

Why do I get the feeling nobody ever checks either my Compilation of Ideas or a thread I once made? Click here for that thread (http://planeshift.oodlz.com/wbboard/thread.php?threadid=7710&boardid=11&styleid=3) . It contains such detailed information such as accessing another plane by dreaming! Even nightmare-planes are involved! Of course, this thread has a 2D dreamworld, but many of those ideas can be used here, if not vice versa.

What is the point of having a 2D world in PS? Sure, it\'s interesting... But what point does it have? If the world is abstract, then why not abstract in 3D? Just a few questions.

On a similar note, I kind of always thought it would be neat if the same MMORPG could be played in 3D, 2D, and maybe even text-based (or at least the CrystalSpace ASCII renderer).

Having a 2D option (for the entire game, not just a dream) would allow many more people to join in regardless of their pc specs.  And they could seamlessly interact with the people running the 3D client.

Then again, maybe this is easier said than done. :)

ok this whole nonsense bout a dream world is a lot more complicated then you think. When would you sleep and y? in the first place when you have aweasome 3d graphics at ones hand to enjoy with endless growth and game time value if you wanted 2d to be added in it should be added in as a death component such as you die and to get out of the death like state you most go through a 2d type mission. that would be the senseable way of seeing this.

yeah and depending on how strong the hallucinogenic drug is, the more intense your dream is lol

well this idea sounds cool, but what\'s the point?  if you propose this as just a minigame, not really good idea, but if this would help in a way with the game, maybe  your dreams would always tell you something worthwhile about you personally that you couldn\'t know without the dream...  or the dream maybe the key to some quest, etc. etc.

I suppose there would be items you can bring at switch from the \"dreamworld\" and \"regular world.\"

Some catagories of dreams could include:
Euphoric Dream State - Pure bliss. *WINK* *WINK* 8) You are entirely detatched from the real world, and this state of sleep heals FAR better then any other.

Physically Detatched Dream State - Your body is disconnected from your dream; if you get damaged you will wake up without damage.

Physical Dream State - Your body is connected to your dream; if you get damaged you will wake up with slight damage. This is never lethal though. More of a \"Hey, when did I get this scar?\"

Nightmare Dream State - You dream body is FULLY attached to your physical body, any and ALL damage will be created on your physical body. There is, however, a good chance to \"snap out of it\" before you are slain by enemies. The maps are also heavilly depressing; you don\'t heal or heal very little while in this dream.

Nightmare-Induced Dream State - Only cast by a magic spell or poison, this locks you into a Nightmare dream state with no way out. You do not heal, and possibly even lose health while dreaming this sort dream! You can only be awaken by:
1) Death.
2) Allies, come to free you by entering your dream; Destroying the \"sign\" in your dream (The \"Sign\" can be anything; a tree, a glowing sword, even a innocent-looking little NPC child. It IS a nightmare, after all; you MUST do things you wish not to do normally.)
3) Killing or Disabling the object, person, or persons responsible for causing the effect
4) Given enough time, you will eventually wake up. However, one type of dream state cannot be escaped from so easilly... 8o

Nightmare-induced dreams take place in the location of the inducer\'s choice such as: a battle feild (possibly battle still raging!) a abandoned city, a diseased hamlet, a charred and dead forest, as well as several other nightmare-ish/hellish areas.

That sounds cool Saphire.
A whole game could be built around that concept alone.

yeah sounds cool :p

ow.. and eh.. I think it would be cool that when you\'re death you will move to a 2D world too, than in this world you can try to get some life stones.. bring them to the temple of life and when you did that, you will return to the normal world and your character is not longer death or sometihng :P

Reasons for the dream world: Some items will stay when you pick them up, or they could raise your level/skills whatever is used in PS. You could hear secrets over the real world etc. Or you could hear about the future.. just what they say: Some dreams could bev true :P

That kinda reminds me of the WoT wolf-dreams where you are in a parallel dream world with different incraments of physically being there. Interesting but...

Im gonna have to say I wouldn\'t want this in PS. I would rather stick with fully 3D \"real life\" PS.

Heh, any jail-game should be possible to play outside the jail. It would be weird otherwise.

I think it is. :)
I\'m not an expert in these things, but I think it would be possible to make a 3D version with pre-rendered backgrounds, you know, like Final Fantasy 7-9. But developing 2 or 3 clients at the same time would be a pain, they have enough work with one, so it propably won\'t happen.
CrystalSpace ASCII renderer? Heh heh, it would look cool, but I doubt you would be able to see anything in all the rubbish. :)

I think a dev would cry if you tell him to make a second game in the game that uses a totally different enginge, but....

I love the idea of dreams in planeshift.
All you who played pen and paper RPGs should know why.

I think it would go much too far to include a whole 2D world for dreams, but maybe you might just give a message or maybe a short video scene of a dream after you slept.

You might get quests like this, get known to important people, increase stats(if you are very lucky), ...

Well, if you\'re trapped in the dreamworld and need to achieve some quest to get out, or gain information, you might need to \"buy\" things in the dreamworld.  Perhaps some magical items could make the transition between the two states - after all, if a dream-state can do physical harm, then anything\'s possible.  Keep in mind that we\'re talking about a magical world in which things like dreams might be more significant than they are here.

Wow wow wow... easy there boy! Don\'t offend the other members will ya? Thank you.

Anyway,  this would not only be coding-wise difficult but would be hard also in theory. It would be like coding a whole new game and that would surely decrease the growth of PS. If there was a dream world, would be easier if it were 3D, which would mean a lot less coding. Anyway, I don\'t see any real purpose on the dreams besides having weird things happening to you. I mean, you have got quests, monsters, guild wars, merchants, mining, etc... =3
I vote for \"improve planeshift a lot before dreaming about strange addons\" got it? dreaming ahaha... cof cof... *ahem*.

It would be simpler and still cool if you could go to sleep and have a random dream (maybe a small minigame) where the outcome of the dream gives some small modifier for the next day.

A dream where you are a master thief could give a bonus to stealth skills, or a dream about defeating hordes of enemies could give a morale bonus.

You could even have dreaming while logged off, which could help keep down the number of AFKers on the servers.

As interesting as it would sound, the dreams would get tedious, and it would be far too much work for the devs.
