Title: Challenge #1
Post by: acraig on May 11, 2004, 11:27:39 pm
Todays Challenge:

1) Create a bowl mesh and texture. Think of it as a mixing bowl.
1a) No animations are needed for this.

2) Figure out how to convert it to Crystal Space sprite3d format.
Wheel of Wishes (http://lww.demon-host.com/index.php?page=detailled_howto3D#items) will be of some help there.

Upload your finished models to the LWW and post a link here.  Best couple of models will be made part of PS ( if you want them to, yadda, yadda copywrite, etc ).

( Edited. Updated for Zeraphs\' question )

what would you like the animation to do? Just stay still like 2 frames?

If anybody needs a mesh converted to .spr and can give it to me in .3ds I can do that for them.  Here is a bowl with UVs loaded into the viewmesh for CS:

Or if you just wanted to draw a bowl, you can download this mesh and texture base here:

    http://upl.silentwhisper.net/uplfolders/upload5/bowlbase.zip

I cannot draw myself, but will try to provide models and UVs for any future challenges so anyone who wants to try can.

Looking real good. Tried out a couple and they look very nice. One thing is that they are super huge in our unit system.  I had to scale them by about 0.01 to get the right size.  Aside from that they look good. I will try to get a couple of in game shots with them soon.

Post by: Zeraph on May 13, 2004, 03:34:27 pm
Ya, well I though that might be a problem, but I realy have no refereance on what size it anything should be? could you give me a cylender that is about 6ft (about the size of a char) so I can compare my models to it, ( .max prefered)
Or could you tell me how big to make this stuff in 3DsMax generic units? (I?m using max6 & haven?t changed the unit preset?.) or do you go according to the scale units, (meters or ft./in.?) :]

Am i very impatient , or peoples have difficulties for exporting a mesh , is there any guide missing than peoples would use ?
Title:
Post by: Crj on May 16, 2004, 09:41:27 pm
The guide is very useful, installed the plug-in, but it gave me an error - FileStream Cannot create (file path)
I even made a bowl...
Title:
Post by: Wedge on May 16, 2004, 09:43:31 pm
When you are specifying the filepath, make sure you add .spr to the filename.  So when exporting the object, it would be like:

Code: [Select]
c:/planeshiftart/bowl.spr

I\'ve been trying to make some textures on the models Zeraph made, but I haven\'t been very succesful so far. How do you make those designs? Anyone know a good tutorial for creating new textures? Also looking for some free guides to design simple objects in 3DSMAX6.

Thx

While the best way to make textures like my bowl textures is to use PaintShop & make some designs like sharp poky things any ware, then just use the Kaleidoscope tool, Go to (Effect > Reflection Effects > Kaleidoscope) in PaintShopPro8 ) & then set the number of petals (& keep the Horizontal&Vertical Offset to 0) & then click the Eye with the Lock on it ?Auto Proof? & then you can see what it will actually look like & you can Spin the ?Rotation Angle? around to whatever you think looks the best!

That?s just a quick Thing about patterned textures, I used PaintShopPro8 & it is nice :)

About 3DsMax6, Go to (Help > Tutorials?) & read all about making 3D models? The tutorials are excellent, start out with the Fundamental tutorials first I would suggest.   :D

Welcome to zephyrus\' worst bowl ever! :D I am trying my hand at all the art forms :) (see the \'man I suck\' thread)

http://www.darkzephyr.plus.com/bowl.jpg

As for the mesh and texture - I am holding wedge to his .3ds to .spr promise

Edit to avoid double postage; The mesh and texture are here (http://www.darkzephyr.plus.com/bowl.zip)
Title: What's Next?
Post by: Zeraph on June 27, 2004, 08:17:19 pm
:D When is the next Challenge going to be?
I am so board I have nothing to do & need some motivating & a task?.
Anyone from the dev team going to give me some simple things you definitely need in the game so I can model them? 8)

Post by: zabeal on July 07, 2004, 03:20:25 am
Well, if you are really really bored there are probebly tons of things you could do to help out. But if you can\'t find any, I would suggest making other simple items, adding a handle to the bowl to make a frying pan, shrinking that down to make spoons, etc.

In 3ds on of the best ways to model is using splines.

And then applying a surface modifier, it autmatically maps anythin between 3 connected vertecies as a polygon.

Anyway if this makes no sense don\'t worry, fiddle around with things, maybe google for a splines tutorial in 3dsMax. You\'ll see what I mean.
Title:
Post by: Zeraph on July 15, 2004, 07:42:25 pm
I enjoy Low-Polygon modeling myself but I should try some more stuff with Splines.
I just have trouble making Realistic textures?. :(

Guess the most logical answer would be: After CB

And no, this gives absolutely no indication when cb will be released...

Title: I know how to model in 3D!!!! Lol
Post by: Taruk on October 31, 2004, 01:57:40 am
Hi guys,
I am just 12 years old i know how to make very good models in 3d using blender  so I am intersted on making models for the game. I first was intersted on participatin on PS team because I can make cool things in python using pygame and wxPython(if u guys dont know its a programing language) but I am only 12... now I just  join the forums and I think I could participate the team not officialy by doing models for the game than send requests of models to danaugrs@uol.com.br.

PS: dont think I cant model good \'cause i am a kid!LOL
Title:
Post by: Karyuu on October 31, 2004, 02:09:13 am
I think, first of all, the team will be looking for someone with a bit more maturity ;) For example, proper sentence structure, spelling, and grammar can really say a lot about you. There are also several talented 3D artists within the PS community already, who have shared their work in the Fanart forum and received comments and criticism. You have yet to prove your claim that you have the skills necessary. So how about you show some of your work first, and -then- decide to boast.

Also, considering your previous few posts, it doesn\'t seem like you know enough about the game and its future, so I would also suggest thorough reading, and socializing with current members of the community to get a better understanding of Planeshift itself.

I don\'t doubt you abilities as a modeler a bit.  I mean there are Photoshop elitists at age 11 so I mean age in this day and age doesn\'t mean anything (at least here it doesn\'t X\'D). Send an example of your work and we\'ll see if your capable of the task. But then again it isn\'t up to me in the first place, its up to the devs, so we\'ll see what they say.

I can\'t speak english very well because I am brazilian. And about the task I made a house, that could show a little of my work and some other things like glass, reflection, etc I will put here a some pictures in my next thread. Because now I am not in my computer.

I heard about that you guys need a boat (I dont know if its true...) so I will try to make a good looking medieval one to show my work.

wait for my replies. ;-)

Here is a site that show the house, an M-16, a shield and a pill:

http://www.freewebs.com/tarukpictures

About the boat I am still working on, and the bottle isnt in the site because they dint let put images tha have more than 750kb

how do I put images in the thread?

Hi all.  Here\'s my own attempt at a bowl, not too sure if im understanding the polycounter right...im using 3ds poly counter, is the # of polys the triangle # or do i haveta double the #?

http://filenet0.tripod.com/bowls.jpg

bowl - 86 polys
apple - 52 polys
pear - 52 polys

Dunno if the poly count is too high or not...

c&c welcome, thanks

edit: how to post images directly?

I dont use blender. I use maya,
so I guess I\'m going to have to read some tutorials.
I really like PlaneShift and I hope it be part of it\'s future.
Besides some of my artisit skills, I also
have alot of Ideas that could Improve the game
and make it unique from other mmorpgs today.

Nikolia.. PM me and I will show you how to do it in Maya (you have to use blender also)
Title: Simple Mixing bowl

A very basic mortar and pestle used to crush and mix ingredients in. Created in Wings3D.
mortar:   96 tris
128x128 texture

pestle:   26 tris

Any comment is welcome.

I like the mortar and pestle. Simple enough, would look good in game.

Are we supposed to create our own textures?where do you guys get yours?

This is a great place to get quality hi-res FREE textures.

Well that may be a nice site but Planeshift won\'t (afaik) use any of these textures.  All graphic material of Planeshift must be published under the Planeshift license, that forbid the use of the textures in other places. So none of these textures can be covered by it.

To be exact, i don\'t even see any mention of license (free use, gpl, public domain???)

And i really like the last model btw

So, how do we legally add textures to our objects if their going to be used in PS?Is making them ourselves the only way?
Title:
Post by: FalcoN on December 31, 2004, 10:33:58 am
It very vaguely states:  \" 1000 Free Textures!!! \"

I don\'t really know if that would qualify as GPL, freeware, ...

As I see it,  you are \'free\' to use them for whatever project you want.
Title:
Post by: FalcoN on December 31, 2004, 10:39:51 am
Also,
you can check out Laanx Wheel of Wishes.

http://lww.demon-host.com/index.php?page=textures (http://lww.demon-host.com/index.php?page=textures)

It\'s a collection of ideas and material that has been contributed to the PlaneShift Project.

Although not as updated as it used to be IMHO, you can still find some great resources over there.
Title:
Post by: elscouta on December 31, 2004, 11:59:00 am
The problem is not whether Planeshift can use it, it is whether Planeshift can cover it with its own license (or if textures doesn\'t need to be covered by PS license).

And the initial post of acraig states \"Create texture\" so for the challenge, i guess even LWW is not allowed...

Someone confirms?

Here is my attempt at the bowl, I tried to make a wooden look:

(http://img292.imageshack.us/img292/5584/bowlpreview1av.jpg) (http://www.imageshack.us)

If you like it, tell me to send you a link to the model&texture via PM. I cant post a link cause of limited bandwith.

Edit: The image above is rendered without any lighting, so the mesh is not shaded on them. Also everything is done from scratch, model & texture, no refferences were used.

 cheers, scream681.
Title:
Post by: Nilrem on July 16, 2005, 03:20:43 pm
imo it looks good.
Although it doesn\'t seem to me like a wooden one.
Perhaps I\'m wrong, but i\'m more comfortable thinking that it is a stone polished one, it looks heavy. I like it.
Title:
Post by: scream681 on July 16, 2005, 06:01:36 pm
In medieval times they couldnt make thin wooden bowls, cause they would break, but yeah maybe I didnt make the texture good enough to look like wood 100%.
Title:
Post by: hramrach on July 26, 2005, 03:09:11 pm
I kind of like lythia\'s bowl. But I am not sure what it is made of. It looks like paper to me. Or perhaps some thin tree bark or something like that.

I think the texture could be better aligned in some places, though. But maybe it is made of several layers that do not cover the whole bowl - who knows.

These would be interesting bowls :)

scream681: the bowl really looks like some sandstone at first glance. But it could be some hard wood as well. And at the outside bottom the pattern seems to form some sort of spiral which really does not look as wood. And perhaps the handles are a bit too sharp.
But it is a nice bowl, not just boring part of sphere. With a bit of polishing it would be very good :)
Title:
Post by: scream681 on July 27, 2005, 09:54:58 pm
The handles are sharp because I tried to keep as low polygon as possible, I\'ll try to see if I cane make a better texture, thanx for the constructive criticism. :)
Title:
Post by: Exhibit 13 on November 17, 2005, 05:21:09 am
Well, took me about 30 minutes. The texture isnt great. But I can send you the .obj file without the texture, so you can create your own. Well, enjoy :o).

Sorry but my 3D modeling program didn\'t show polygons, :o(.

Oh, and this is my first post :o).
