Title: Food not just limited to main courses
Post by: Kuiper7986 on May 15, 2004, 11:50:57 pm
IN a lot of MMORPG cooking has always been cooking big courses like pie and cakes, meats or stews, etc...

But I think it\'d be cool if snacks could be made. Like chips? Banana Chips as such? Or preserved meat like some type of meat jerky, cookies, little candies.

Oh yah I think candy making would be a cool job under cooking. Of course candy would need lots of exp to make because we all love candy ;) Ya hard lemon candy, yay...

And if there were fruit hard candy were able to be made then it would go like get water and sugar and boil together in a hot pot. Then after add flavor juices from your favorite fruit, then put into little candy moulds, then let it cool off. Candy moulds would be a craftable item. You know you can change the shapes like stars, circles, or ovals or something.

Sounds cool but...what would candy do? IRL we get the pleasure of eating it, but it has no nutritional value...and you must eat a ton of candy to actually boost your energy a little. What good would it do in-game?

temporary increase in stamina. It can also be made for cooking for exp. It can be sold in bulk maybe from guild to guild. They can be used as rations when no other food is available.

Same with Chips.

edit: Also preserved fruits and meat jerkys.

Candies don\'t really give sugar-rush, because the sugar in candies get to your stomach slowly.

Maybe candies will raise mana?

Looks like you have played RS :) Yah I am big into cooking and I was thinking more of actual RESTAURANTS,

You need traders/suppliers for the essentials
  Master Cooks
  Servers
Security for the dine and dashers/drunks
  Advertisers

For once I would like to see a game expand the idea and actually make the system work, but you know we haven\'t even got the next release yet so I\'ll wait before preaching more about this!

I admit I play RS, since there\'s not really any other free MMORPG out there. Except Tibia but that\'s just a (insert negative remark here) game.

My name is Boreas9 if you ever find me on there.

back to topic:
Opening a restaurant would be cool, actually I\'ve already talked about it with the Blizters (my guild that I\'m proud to say).

Hard to say if I\'m more into cooking or herblaw/pharmeceuticals (non-magic recovery medicene)

hack&slash alert  :P

right, candies should be useless... that\'s obvious...
if you want to make food, make it iron rations, bread, meat and so on...
and if you really want candies, add some poison to them and sell it to some sucker, who won\'t sense that poison is there, because the candy is so sweet and stuff...
*grins and walks away*

of course...we could sell poison candies to noobs.

Candy would still be a good idea. I wouldn\'t mind making chocolate bars with caramel inside. Of course that\'s be like an advanced cooking item but still sweets and candies are great things to cook.

Also like if you were going to have a girlfriend online in-game you could make candy, give her flowers, and get her or make her jewelry, see it all plays out.

There\'s only a single flaw about all this... PlaneShift happens to be a medieval fantasy game. Sure, fantasy covers a lot but so does medieval. In the medieval times, people didn\'t know how to make those sweets such as striped things with hoards of sugar, or chocolate with caramel. First of all, back then, sugar wasn\'t like it is today. It\'s wasn\'t mass produced. And how in the world would get get the cocoa beans required for chocolate, that grow down near equator? I\'m just asking. :)

Now, if you want candy in your game it shouldn\'t be for \"just cooking exp\". Candy should be an exclusive treat to give at a guild party, to show everyone just how much money your guild has. The same with someone specialised in making candy (candy isn\'t cooked, by the way). The better and more exclusive candy you have, the richer you can get when some guild hosts a party. :)

Try and think about things before you suggest them. It helps. ;)

True, but you forgot that PS isn\'t in the real world.
Maybe in Yliakum there are cocoa trees right there after the hills that surrounds Hydlaa? And sugarcanes grow on the sides of the roads?

Try and think about things before you negate them. It helps.  ;)

Animals are used as companions of travel or as colleagues in many jobs. Animals can entertain in shows and arts, can bear heavy weights, can be useful to hunt, to find hidden objects, to guide through dangerous places, to fly. The trainers should have patience and leadership, be gentle and strong at the same time and have quick reflexes.

How about animal candy that you give your pets when theyve done a good job? This way you can keep them faithful. Maybe this can be implemented on n00bs later on :D

Any knuckle head can make candy. All you need is sucrose (sugar) in either liquid or solidified form. If its solid then it needs to be liquidified with water. Then simply add a flavouring such as lemon essence or juice etc. Then boil it down till the water is sufficiently evaporated and the liquid turns into toffee. Then just pour into a mould and let it set in a cool place.

This is known as boiled confectionary. Im sure that the concept is quite viable in a fantasy RPG.

Instead of being so overly sarcastic, try thinking about what you\'re negating.

True, PlaneShift is a fantasy world, however as I said (which you would have noticed, had you just read my post properly) it is a medieval world as well. Now, fantasy and medieval... There are sugar canes growing on the sidewalk. Cocoa trees everywhere. Mind if I ask where those things fit into a fantasy world anyway? Especially an underground fantasy world. As far as what I recall, things that grow above ground, that need sunlight etc. and which are real plants, aren\'t fantasy plants that grow in caves and provide the inhabitants with cocoa beans and sugar. You must also remember that PlaneShift is an RPG. If you had just the tiny bit of courage it takes to play your character, you would have no clue what cocoa beans and sugar can be used for, and it would take you years to develop a way to make chocolate bars and caramel fillings.

Now as I said before, think about things before you suggest them. If you want fantasy world, you must take it all. You can\'t hand-pick the few things you want and mix them with a semi-real universe based on whatever ideas you have. That is what you see other games which people dislike so much, and it provides you with nothing but poor gameplay. Besides if you want a fantasy world, why not suggest having trees that grow money? :)

The sugarcanes and cocoa trees are just examples. There could be sugar-rich fruits \\ vegetables growing around the 1st level. As for cocoa, there could be substitutes.

I agree that it could take years to develop these things, but don\'t forget that most races lived a few years (maybe hundreds or thousands) before they came to Yliakum. Some of them highly intelligent too.
Even if the plants in Yliakum aren\'t exactly like those they used to know, their agricular knowledge should be enough to use the Yliakum plants in a similar way to the ones they had in their home. If they\'re not intelligent enough to do that, they\'ll starve before CB is released :P

I can\'t really see a point in making candies \\ chocolate though. If it does nothing besides being nice or be a status symbol, I doubt anyone would buy it.
Even for RP, what\'s the point in buying something completely useless?
As for poison, people will know better than eating something that gives them nothing and might be poisonous.

yes, that\'s why you need to think to pull that off... you could observe some adventurer and at right moment leave a poisoned candy on his path (leave some worthless stuff and maybe food as well. So he won\'t be suspicious). The fool would pick it up... why? Because it\'s FREE item :] and after some time simply eat it. And he won\'t taste poison because the sugar will make it impossible. Now when he gets sick... attack
:P
anyway, I agree with Grono... \'tis medieval theme, stop making those newspaper and other \"you know what would be cool?\" ideas :P

I wouldn\'t mind something like candy in the game but on halloween only :D They need to distinguish between two things cooking in the wild with a fire and basic equipment to cooking in a buildiing with range and what not!

It should be two different categories of cooking, you should be able to use stuff from the wild to create some really good food that heals a high ammount of points and the same goes for kitchen cooking!

Naa, you should just have to have the right equipment for some items...to cook a hot dog, all you need is a fire and a stick :P  to make candy, you need a range, pots, pans...etc.

Ahem... but there were many cultures during \"medieval\" times that were making candies in lots of different forms:

American Indians: Fish smoked and glazed in honey

Incans/Aztecs/Mayans: Chocolate candies of all kinds

Hawaians: Sugarcane mixed with different fruits ad then dried, fruits with honey and nuts.

Britains: Candied yams, Candied etc. Honeyed things (such as mead), Sweet cream candies, Taffy\'s, etc.

Chinese: Rice candies, sesame candies, etc.

Japanese: Rice candies

Those are just off the top of my head. I\'m sure that others can come up with more examples.

cryofame, I\'m sure there are many more examples amonst the tropical area\'s of the world, but ...

I\'m no candy expert but from what I have read, most of medievil Eurpope had very little source of sugar outside non-tropical fruits, honey and malted grain.  All of these sources were used heavily in the production of wines, meads and beer.

I have never heard of any candy made with mead.  The candy process would drive off much of the alcohol which would not make a lot of sense.  Sweet mead certainly were produced and often served after meals.

You must remember most of the now common sources of sugar - cane, beet, fruits could only be grown in the lower latatudes.

Regardless here are some more items for your list:

Spainish - Southern spain was famious for it\'s oranges - I sure there was some very good candies created there.

Middle east - Figs were grown in large quatities - would it not be cool to be there when the first fig newton was made.

why not have some ordinary foods candified to increace the amount of HP ther heal. Also this thread was meant to discuss other things than candies.
For instance when would you want to make a starter when a main course heals more health?

I really fail to see the point here - candies are the result of a pretty modern production market, personally i don\'t see the need to have them as it seems as a slight desire to have everything.
In medieval times people lived from day to day, and couldn\'t afford such laxuries such as candies (until mass factory production rose a couple of hundred years ago), maybe royality could afford this expensive hand-made laxury.

Aside from that, i think cooking skill should have non-main courses, be it cakes/cookies or the mentioned sweet rice or apple/fish with honey (ewww).

Good rpg\'s from my point of view, have a food level so it brings the need for food (since the second need, eating something with a good taste, doesn\'t really exists here, duh), having finishing courses, such as cakes or other sweet things is like an added bonus, but candies and nuchos ... hrrm ... *cough cough*.
Well i guess it\'s irrelevant to sound my protest, since PS isn\'t going to be a strict role-playing game, more like a \"roll\"-playing game.

It will be a little fun If they will add the \"Hunger Meter\"
When it reaches zero a new status will be shown
\"Hunger Unpower\"
It will lover all statuses by main Lvl. and \"Hunger resistance\" Lvl.
