Title: Treasure Trails
Post by: Icefalcon on May 16, 2004, 09:27:28 pm
OK, for once, runescape has a new idea that is of pretty good quality...

Quote
Today we have released treasure trails into RuneScape. Various npcs on members servers will now ocassionaly drop random clues.

Each clue points to the location of another random clue. Solve enough clues (and maybe face one or two other challenges) and you will eventually find treasure, which could be anything from food or weapons to various rare items which can only be found on treasure trails.

Stronger monsters will tend to drop harder clues which will tend to lead towards more valuable treasure. Be warned the hardest clues are very tricky indeed.

You can\'t be on more than one treasure trail at once. If you have a clue, npcs won\'t drop more clues until you solve the trail you are on, or you abandon the trail by dropping your current clue.

Treasure clue are a fairly rare drop. A similar sort of rarity to low level gems, although not necessarily on the same monsters. If you just keep playing normally you will get them as a pleasant suprise from time to time.

Good luck and happy treasure hunting!

I would love to see this idea in Planeshift, modified a little of course, but the concept is pretty cool IMHO.

Yeah sounds kinda cool. If PS expanded on the idea heaps so its much better than runescapes it could be alot of fun.

How about not finding any info at all?
Im just brainstorming here, so leave me be :p

This is what i was thinking of:
There are mountains and caves and rivers and more. Then how about that in 1 of the mountains there is a abandoned village, where are corpses everywhere. The trail to this village is nowhere, except for some wagon trails or footsteps now and then (so you have to scout for yourself).
Then in this village a giant hole has been made in the center, forming an entrace to a giant lava pit. In there are several tests (depending on the item it would be brain tests for magic item and strength test for battle equipment) When you pass them you get to a shrine with several extremely rare random items, only to be found in such places cause there would also be caves and such where more of these \"quests\" would be.
Then you are allowed to pick out 1 of these items and make it your own. Since everbody would have different items to choose from, it would bring a lot of variety into the game, and make these rare weapons more powerfull since there is a chance of 0.005% that some1 else has the same item.
This is just an example. You could also have water caves, abandones castles, a wide desert with a dungeon entrance somewhere and more. All these tests would be only available to each person 1 time, so your choice of item is important, and no1 can keep doing the same quest untill he or she has an uber outfit.

For the choice of item i tought of this:
Just something like you have a slot for a helm, 2 slot for 2 rings, a slot for a amulet, a slot for bracelets, a slot for armor, a slot for boots, 2 slots for weapons/shield, a slot for leg pads and a slot for arm pads. This is a total of 10 slots. To make your choice carry weight there should be only 5 or 6 of these tests, making the places harder to find (less places means less chance of finding them). At the same time the only way to get yourself totally equiped with these rare items is to battle great monsters that drop comparable items as well (altough of lesser power) or to find a person that has a rare item and is willing to sell/trade it with you.

To make people also want to carry these with them, i would suggest that these rares cannot be dropped when you die: you always keep them with you nomatter what happens to you. Else no1 dares to bring their items along againt strong opponents afraid of losing them.

Its just off the Runescape main page...yes I do check it out every once in a while if I am extremely bored.

Uh, I don\'t think I agree with you completely, Xanaroth. These items should be rare and unique, but not unable to lose or be destroyed. All items should be able to get lost, stolen, dropped...whatever. If you get all this undroppable armor, of course you would wear it all the time and not worry about dying because you wouldn\'t lose anything...not good.

If the devs decide to go with this progressive weapon system then I dont want to invest hours and hours upgrading my sword to just have some bandit pilfer it off my corpse when I get ganged by a bunch of muggers. Well I would like to think I could dispatch a bunch of muggers like a tasty doughnut but thats a means to and end/example.

I was just brainstorming icefalcon :P
anyway, maby that was a bit to much, altough i think you people agree that these items should at least be unable to be stolen by a pickpocketing thief or so. Else a n00bster tries his stealing ability on you and look at it, he got lucky and your rare/unique armor is gone :O
That just wont be fun. Also you have to be on the lookout 24/7 when you have these rares since all thiefs would start hunting you down. No sport in that at all.
If you can loose it when you die, you can drop it etc i agree it would be good, but stealing i would be seeing as a bit to high risk. All people non-thief would be restricted to 6 items, while thiefs can easilly get more by expanding their skill and keep stealing.

I think you should be able to designate items that will be dropped if you die. This way it gives you some control over what you lose. Cause like I said I dont want to waste all my time building something up and losing it to some cruiser. Especially a noob that cant even use what he steals.

well... maby there could be a restriction that equiped items cannot be stolen and stuff from your inventory can. Same goes for droppings: your inventory would drop when you die, but equiped items wont or from your equiped items only the weakest 3/4 would drop.

First of all, in case you people didn\'t notice there\'s a whole forum dedicated to stealing and other PvP related issues.

As for the treasure thing. One way to improve it, would be to make some places and treasures only open one random day per year, or just once in the whole life of PS, therefor making items collected through these quests truely unique. If you\'ve read fantasy books, or played fantasy based games such as Baldurs Gate or whatever, you\'ll know that the really good and special items are \"one of a kind\". :)

Edit: If any of you have seen those Indiana Jones movies, you\'d know that caves that hold special items usually collapse or somehow seal themselves after you\'ve gotten it. :)

Besides, wouldn\'t you feel special if you were the only person in the entire game with that special sword or that special armor? ;)

...yes I do check it out every once in a while if I am extremely bored.

See...only during extreme boredom do I visit the site. I dont think I have actually logged in for months...Oh wait, yes I have, to check out the new graphics...I got bored with it under two min.  :( Actually, I was hoping I would like it and that it would satisfy my gaming hunger for at least an hour...but no, Runescape is still just as boring :(

Ive been there. Its not even the poor gameplay that turns me off. Its the poor graphics that repel me as soon as I see them.

*beats tygerwilde unconcious with the n00byclub*

Its a good idea, I noticed this as well when on RS! Except I heard that the rate at which the clues drop are to high, to easy so I hear from my friend Domingo who is a member!

wahahahahahaha, what an incredible loser!!! being a member in runescape is the most stupid thing i have ever heard of! what is he? is he deadly sick, or is his iq lower than 50 or so?? common, how supid can some1 be to let them play such a bad game and even pay for it!
if you play dro (hacked version of ragnarok online) you will see that it is better then runescape in all possible ways and still is free.

Have you played it, if not why judge it? You must have played it to have judged it why you must be a \"incredible loser!!!\" or maybe \"deadly sick\" or even a \"iq lower than 50 or so??\" You played the game to so you are all of that as well?

No point in me defending RS any further always get shot down :P

I also have a very good friend who is a member of runescape, Ive been trying to get him to switch to Planeshift, he would fit in fine, hes a good roleplayer, but he still is addicted to runescape...I was once...you have to admit, it is addicting...

Ill admit that. I think runescape uses some primitive form of subliminal advertising to coax you into playing for hours and hours, day in day out.

Luckily I just suddenly became sick of it and managed to look away from the light. Thus releasing me from its tight grip. Freeing me from the web of lameness. Now I despise the game.

Yup, thats basically my story. I was hooked until I finally realized all I was doing is repetative clicking in hopes of gaining something more...so I could click for something better...and after that, to click some more... :(  Quite depressing now that I look back on it...

Well, i played it yes, but i was smart enough to stay with the free-part. That is why i know somebody must be terribly stupid if they wish to pay for it (because there is a total free version as well!)
