Title: Whyat was the very first rpg computer game you ever played?
Post by: Icefalcon on May 18, 2004, 03:21:22 am
Yes, I was thinking, and I still remember my very first rpg game that I played, and I think it set the stage for my love of gmaes and computors in general. I think I was about 5 years old, and we got this demo disc in the mail...some thing for CompuServe I think (Is that still around today?). Anyway it had this demo for Castle of the Winds. I had always showed an interest in computors at a very young age, in fact I screwed up a whole hard drive by messing around with files...installing things, deleting things, all with that old windows 2.whatever before Windows 95 came out. I eventually deleted almost all of the systems important files, and eventually it just...died. Anyway, Castle of the Winds was at that time the funnest thing I had ever played. (remember I was like 5-6 years old). You were this guy and you learned magic spells throughout the game. You killed monsters and they dropped items, coins, etc. Graphics were 2d, and there was almost no storyline at all, but it fits under the RPG genre. *sigh* good times :D

Anyways, what was the first RPG game you ever played? If you remember...

jeeze man, I\'ve been gaming since pong... remembering my first rpg is... well, damn near impossible... I remember a few though, several Dungeons and Dragons 1st ed computer games. all in like eight bit graphics. the one that really got me hooked was the original \"quest for glory\" by sierra. that\'s been a lot of years ago.

hate to get off topic here, but does anyone remember a computer game where you raised dragons from eggs? it was like an eighties SSI if I remember right...

First RPG?  I think the first real RPG I ever played was FF7.  After that I was hooked.  To this day it still remains the best game ver created.

As far as classic RPG games (ie. Diablo, Baldurs Gate, etc.)  I was never a big fan of them.  Mainly because they seem too...stereotypical to me.  They all feel like the same game to me.

But yes FF7 was the first and best RPG I ever played.

When I was younger, I used to play Wizardry I, a new thing at the time. I still play it every once in a while. Personally, I don\'t like the way new games all have automaps. In Wizardry, you painstakenly map out levels on graph paper. I think that\'s one of the most fun aspects of the game.

The next two, I also remember, were Diablo and Exile II. Diablo was my first multiplayer RPG. I don\'t like the Diablo series much, and though I was hooked on it back then, I rarely play it now. The Exile series, I think, is a masterpiece, especially considering the technology available when it was made. I play Blades of Exile quite frequently.

Actually, I suppose they are RPGs, now that I think of it I also played a couple of the King\'s Quest series.  Those were great games.  I think I played I, V, and VII.  the first one was very very basic, but enjoyable.

Probobly the first RPGs I played were the King\'s Quest series as well.  One of the best early RPGs that I played that got me really hooked on the genre was the original Lands of Lore.  (Too bad the sequels weren\'t as good). Awsome graphics and gameplay at the time.

Does Zelda on the NES count?  If not that... then the Zelda game on the gameboy.... and then one on the SNES.... and if Zelda doesn\'t count at all, it\'s pry Secret of Mana.

The Exile series is a masterpeice, not because of technology but they were darn entertaining.  Before that I played a couple dungeon-crawling things with hideous graphics on my mac classic, a little kings quest (more puzzle than RP, I guess.) and some text-based adventures... Most of my early programming adventures were dedicated to making a text-based RPG engine.  (all dismal failures, of course)

My first rpg was diablo 2. Pretty good game, but the one which got me hooked was fallout. I started with fallout 2, but then played all the series. I really wonder why aren\'t so many post nuclear rpg.

Legend of Zelda:  A Link to the Past was my first RPG.

Also played many other Zelda games like Ocarina of Time, Majora\'s Mask, Oricle of Ages, Oricle of Seasons.

I played the FF series once a long time ago and was put of by the fighting style. Seemed to chess like to me and too many FMVs. Might have changed over the series, but for any series to run over 12 odd games, must be flogging the dead horse.

I also played Secret of Mana, Evermore(Or was it called Secret of Evermore?) Love them games, lots of entertainment back in the days of SNES.

Also, anyone else here played Dink Smallwood??

Dink Smallwood was crappy.
I guess my first fantasy game was Heroes of eminem, but that\'s more of a strategy. The first proper FRP was BG2:SoA.

That would be zelda on the NES, damn that\'s a long long LONG time ago but i do miss the game, although it wasn\'t that hard it did rock.

Zelda on NES, but since it\'s supposed to be a computer-game..does Heroes of Might and Magic 2 count?

Nice thread :)

My first fantasy game ( although it was more fantasy/adventure than \"RPG\" ) was Loom (http://www.mobygames.com/game/sheet/gameId,176/). Although I was only about 9 at the time, so I don\'t remember a whole lot of it. I don\'t think I ever finished it.

Other than that, Zelda: Link\'s Awakening on the GameBoy ( again, I personally would class that as more adventure type game? ).

First real big fantasy was Baldurs Gate though. Not had it long, I\'am late to the whole fantasy/RPG genre myself. I got about 1/4 of the way through, but Univeristy work always get\'s in the way and after you leave it for a while you forget where you are :( I will definately play it all through over this summer after my exams though :)

Does Leisure Suit Larry count as an RPG? :D

Eye of the beholder, or some game with crypt or something in it\'s name, or moonstone(kick-ass game, i never beat the dragon though(annoying bugger)), all on the AMIGA.

I don\'t suppose Gauntlet counts?  I\'m trying to think of one that I played on my C64.  There has to have been at least a couple of them... Ah.  Maybe DarkZone counts.

What the heck was the name of that game?  It was on a Top 10 disk.  You know... the disks with stupid games that the companies can\'t sell alone because they\'re not worth it.

Anyway.  Guess this post didn\'t contain anything useful.

ok, aendar, you confused some people...

kings quest isn\'t an RPG, it\'s an adventure title, along with leisure suit larry, monkey island, and day of the tentacles (whos proper title is maniac mansion II) zelda is still in the running because it is known as an adventure/roleplaying game.

Gauntlet on an apple 2
no I\'m not old my family was just poor so we only had old stuff people gave to us.

kings quest was fun too

Rogue was probably the first game I started on.  Nothing like mashing the spacebar in hoping that it would somehow attack that Q harder.  Then you end up facing a T(roll) and having it whip your ass.   Either that or starve to death.  It had also fire breathing dragons and magic wands.   Not bad for an ASCII game....

I don\'t remember what it was called, but the first RPG I ever played was a hosted graphical game on the original Prodigy.... remember Prodigy?  IBM\'s attempt at creating the internet?  Anway, was kindof this screen-shot advance games set in a big maze with all kinds of puzzles and traps, etc.  I think I even remember bumping into a BabbaYagga hut at one point.  Was a really sweet game and really got me hooked on fantasy and RPGs.... Wow that game had a lot of impact on my life.....

Oh, yeah, and I was playing that on an IBM PS1 with a 286 processor!! LOL! How far we\'ve come.....

I had all those cool games like \"Day of the tentacle\", \"Sam & Max hit the road\" and stuff. Either one of those or the classic \"Full Throttle\" :D

Fallout 1 and Planescape Torment must be the best RPG\'s ever :)

hummmm... first for me was probably umm  final fantasy 5 or Secret of mana, maybe Zelda on NEs if that counts I think but yeah, AendarCallenlasse is right: Final Fantasy Seven is the best ever. (and ff7 came out on PC so if you dont have a psx thers still no excuses :P)

Anyone who gets to play it as their first game is a lucky girl/guy, no doubt its just the best, I still play through it once every year.. humm typing+drinkee not working well..   :):):P:) twah :)

Guess my first rpg like game i played was heroquest (quest for glory 1). First time i tried i hated the game, since you could die. Yes i was a real sissy then....

But then i became older and used to being slaughtered, so somehow i tried the game a second time (probably cause my brother liked to play it) and found out it was a great game.

Now i am/was playing baldurs gate 2 and before that diablo2. But with the latter im at difficulty hell at the quest where you have to fight 3 statues. Like i wasn\'t killed enough by them in nightmare. So i stopped playing, but i want to continou someday and let them feel my wrath...

Oh and Dink Smallwood is a great game anyone who thinks otherwise just can\'t appreciate the fun in chopping the heads of ducks and watching them run around bleeding all over the place. :D

lol, I just sat down and began playing BG2 again, this time with The Darkest Day installed, and thought I\'d play it through with a shapeshifter druid, I was never really fond of druids, but they are actually quite different from my usual necromancer :P

But i played golden axe on the Master System before that.

c\'mon, I know final fantasy is great, but there are MUCH better games on the pc than anything in the FF series. any of the dnd games were better, stonekeep, the ultimas, the original stronghold by SSI. why does FF have to come up in EVERY conversation about games?

final fantasy is not a pc game, whether it came out in a conversion or not. it is every bit a console game.

Dungeon Master II was also one of the first rpg games I played, I don\'t remember the names of the others, but modern games could really learn a thing or two from the old rpg\'s.

They had a certain quality that could keep me glued to the screen for hours upon hours, not that many new games have had that effect on me...
