Title: noob's you dont have to have lag..read

1: go to planeshift opengl icon and right click then go to properties

2: change compatability to win nt 4.0

3: disable visual themes(no this will not affect graphics)

here is my computer
1.7 celeron
728 megs ram
32 meg video

so see my computer preaty much sucks(as well as my spelling) but i have near no lag at all

Egads!, sounds like you have my comp.   8o   I\'ve tried your suggestion, but to no avail I\'m afraid.  Probably has to do with a really sucky dial up connection? (I sooo have to invest in DSL *sigh*)

I\'ve got Windows XP, and have Norton AntiVirus too which I think I\'ve heard can cause some probs too?

Actually having DSL or not doesn\'t matter, except when you think of updating speeds in the future. At this point, PS requires ~0.1 kbps (aka. 1/100 of a 56k connection), so that\'s not your main worry.

As for the AntiVirus, well.. You might get better performance if you disable it. That\'s up to you to try, but increasing the amount of virtual memory or adding more RAM is usually what helps the most when you have 512 MB of RAM or more. :)

I honestly don\'t know why switching compability mode would help on lag. Mine seems to work just fine in XP-mode.

win nt 4.0 is the mode xp users should use since when it somes to comatible\'s xp is = to nt 4.0. but other than that i have no idea why it has helped my lag but it has. and its helped a couple other people to so i know its not just my computer.

The ultimate lag fix is a monster of a pc. I can guarentee perfect playing. :)

Disabling your anti-virus may help but it can put your computer at risk. Since most anti-virus\' use alot of computer resources I have found that winpatrol is the best thing to have running in the background so I can have my anti-virus off while I play games.
I play Savage The battle for newerth alot and the only way to help lag is to connect online without my fire-wall and anti-virus but I have to have winpatrol on or I get that stupid virus that attacks win XP everytime.
I am not endorsing winpatrol or anything like that, I am just a computer tech that has found the best way to play games online with the least amount of resistance :+)
Like Gronomist said, it\'s up to you if you want to disable it but if you do make sure you are still protected.

nope, no improvement.

I usually notice slowdown when I\'m looking in the direction of huge polygon counts which should indicate a graphics card / rendering engine issue.

Right click the Open GL icon in your start menu. Then hit the compatibility TAB up top.

 Err, do you ever heard of those patches launched by Microsoft that prevents those kind of viruses/trojans to infect your computer? Well, I kinda suggest you start downloading them ... Then you won\'t have to run antivirus programs on your pc, significantly slowing down your PC and your internet connection.
 
 And as for the NT thingy, well mostly is in your head ^_^ ... psychological problem, or name it how you want. Switching the compatibility in Windows makes that application (in theory, because it doesn\'t work everytime) compatible with other os. Of course, NT is a server OS, that optimizes the internet connection for better use, but that doesn\'t change anything in xp ...
 Though, I strongly recommand you Windows Server 2003, good  for the lan, good for the net.
 Anyway, in conclusion, the main problem is your own system. The net could work better sometimes, sometimes it doesn\'t, that\'s why you believe you don\'t have lag anymore ^_^
