From a very reliable source (which I cannot reveil) I can safely announce that the release will be sometime between 1 day from now and 1 year from now.

Greetings,

I hope that the fragnetics has prepared their server to deal with the massive influx from people that have been waiting for the CB to be released...
I also hope that CrystalBlue will be coming soon... It\'s torture if they come out with a \"almost ready\" announcement and then let us wait for +6 months.. :(
But enough with the pessimism.. ITS COMMING!! WHOOHOO :D

Apparently you are not aware of common release terminology:
\'we have started planning\' means it will never get out.
\'almost ready\' means at least one year from now.
\'it is really done\' means at least six months before release.
:-)
Greetings,
-
you guys just made my day :D
i love you peanuts !!!! (<- joke on the (ex-)censorship engine)
-
Too bad the devs dont put everything into the CVS. It is kinda pointless to even get the CVS (other than debugging) if everything isnt in there :/ If everything was, I would be happy :{!
-
As you know well, the exact day is hard to tell. It depends mainly on how the internal testing goes and how many bugs we find.
We really want this release out as much as you do.
Just remember that the upcoming release is NOT a complete game. It\'s our next tech demo towards the goal of a complete game.
-
Everything is looking good. I was so surprised when Firefox notified me that the news page was updated. I almost thought that it was CB :P. Anyway, I am still glad that you could share an update with us (its been nearly two months) that CB is nearing and our wait will be rewarded at last.
If you don\'t have your server clustering code yet, isn\'t it a bad decision to have multiple servers? It might break up the community.
The server will be filled right up as soon as all the people hear of the release. Any predictions? (I am guessing ~150-250 ppl for the first day)
By the way, your link to fragnetics is bad (use http://www.fragnetics.com)
Thanks for keeping us up to date, Talad.

2003.10.27
Release of Crystal Blue is still set for end of year, all team working hard for that deadline.
2003.12.08
The release of Crystal Blue has been delayed; it will not be out for end of year. The new target date will be presented as soon as possible.
Don\'t you people ever learn.
Don\'t get your hopes up.
Judging on past experience soon means in a few months.
-
WAH!!!!!!!!!!!
I have holidays NOW... and CB is coming out! ahhhhhhh
-
yea good timing :-) :P
-
WOOOOHOOO YEAH JEUH JEUH!
*gasp*
It\'s news! CB is closer than it has ever been (just like every other day :P).
-
Well give me a phone call when its out because ill be on FF11 and I want to play soon as it is released!

lol, no really, this time is for real. :) At least, it looks it from the state of the CVS. :) (I hope ;))
-
All I can say is thank you for the update... I know I\'m keeping my eyes open, even if I don\'t post on the forums much lately.
Thank you for all your hard work, devs.
-
If it is released in the next week i will be the happyest peron in the world because i can play it for 2 weeks straght!!!! i love hoildays...
-
Well... I\'m happy to say the least.
When I read the news on the main page, I started bouncing inexplicably. I hit the ceiling... then the floor... then the ceiling... etc. After I had sold the idea of giving promising news updates to create perpetual motion machines to a large corporation for much money, pessimism kicked in. Now, the only way to combat pessimism is to eat a sandwich, so I did and said \" To heck with pessimism!\" So I sat down and waited... expecting CB to be released in a matter of hours. After that, I realized I was being a bit too optimistic and wandered off to get another sandwich and then play Final Fantasy 9.
I feel... Tense... d*mn it... I hate \"teasers\" :P
edit: Oh, yes... and I\'m on summer vacation! But soon I\'m being hauled off with the family to a ranch/retreat center where there are no phones, much less internet (I think the front desk thingie had an iMac to be used purely for arcaeological purposes, running at warp factor 0.00001)

Yes, thank you for letting us know what is going on. I was really pleased to hear the news!
-
Ahhh...at last...some news...
Although bad timing for me...my monitor is broken and i am a bit short of money to buy new one...well...i\'ll manage CB wait for me! :P
-
wihhi i came home from my last final and i saw the news, :D sooo coool tx devs i hope it won\'t take months now :)
-
Yeah, when it comes out, i can play 8 weeks on a row yeah! thank you :D
-
oh man i cant w8. the alst time they sad it was comming out and it wassend i almost died. so i would be come here for a wile, dont want to almost die again
-
They will have to put disclaimers up: News regarding CB can cause death. Browse at your own risk.
-
omg bobo just wet himself
looks like its time for my dueling :D
-
Expect that they will find many glaring bugs that will take several months to fix.
That way if CB should happen to be released sooner than that you will be merrily surprised.
Life advice: Keep your expectations low to avoid disappointment.
-
Keeping your expectations low all the time may make you a downer in the eyes of your peers :p

From Fragnetics site:
6 May 2004
We are also in the process of preparing for the next PlaneShift tech demo, codenamed Crystal Blue. Although there is no launch date for the release, we can confirm that the game will be run on a dedicated server, unlike the present Molecular Blue release.
EDIT: That player number on planeshift.fragnetics.com is approaching 200,000 (197470).

Could be alot of people seeing the words \"Crystal Blue\" and losing control, making account after account in hopes that one won\'t go through, indicating the removal of the MB server. Ehrm, no. That was not me. Gaack! *snatches logs away from inquiring bystanders* I told you it wasn\'t me, is that not enough, oh ye of little faith?

(Dot dot dot...)
O...M...G!!!!!!!!!!
I was just checking the main website expecting no news, but the second that news item appeared my heart started pounding like a heart attack. I was a bit disappointed that CB wasn\'t actually released yet, but I\'m extremely glad that the devs are \"close\" to finishing it. If I expected it soon, I would probably kill myself during the next 6 years, so I think I\'ll just keep my hopes down.
But thanks a bunch...gotta start warning loved ones...hehe >=)

Um,
When CB comes out, do we run the Planeshift Updater thingy? If we do, the update will be pretty big huh? Also, will ALOT of new content be added? Like at least 5 new cities and 100 new monsters?
And maybe bare chested ladies?
Ok nvm that was lame.
Thanks :)
-
You will have to download the new release manually. The current updater is very simple and cannot get CB for you. Check out the video on the main page (although it only shows a new place for a second) for a preview of CB.
As for my last post, I was just pointing out that they\'re going to be running a dedicated server, which will help improve performance and allow more players to be connected at one time... something I\'m looking forward to.

They definitely need to stop scaring us like that... unless... it\'s all part of an elaborate plan where they post news pretending CB is nearly done and put us into a coma then delay the CB release as long as they like. Yes, that must be it.
-
:s no!!! i hope not. but why cant they let us have an unfinished version and let us downlouad updates and patches.
all this waiting and hoping for the release is killing us all.
they wont have any players left when the time for the release hase come
-
Funny how you\'ve nominated yourself the voice of the people. You\'ll notice that most of the people here disagree with you. We don\'t want an unfinished product. We\'d rather wait for a full, working version to come out.
And remember many of us have been waiting much much longer than you have. They\'re working as fast as they can to put out a product that won\'t cost a thing to you. So suck it up and shut up.
-
Here here, while I have not being waiting as long as some of the pepole here I still have been waiting a long time and I want CB to take as long as it needs to so we can get the quality and the quantity :P
-
I\'m not even going to try playing the first day, I\'m gonna wait till the numbers go down before trying it.
-
I don\'t think the numbers will go down. I mean, more and more people will start hearing of a free MMORPG with combat. The numbers can only go up.
-
Ok seems we have good news finally ...
Will you update the new\'s page on the web site when it will be real for sure ?
May be with a link on the download pages ?
I really would like to begin gaming with you all ...
Thanks !

It is the unspoken law of the PS team to never give a \"release date\" since most likely they\'ll miss it (even if not by much) and everyone will be disapppointed and that will start a round of threads by disgruntled players. So, it\'ll be a suprise when it comes out, and you will become a gruntled player ^_^

The team should choose a certain goal week for the release, and announce the release date like two weeks from that week. That way, they could only be early.
-
The thing is, that we do this in our spare time.
Others (not I :P) have jobs for example, and sometimes there is some RL issues that will slow down.
Stuff like the last is unpredictible and therefore we can\'t set a release week
-
I\'d rather it be constantly updated/released, unfinished, buggy, and crashing.
I think the community should be the testers all the time. Internal testing is for closed projects. If this were the case, there would be a constant flow of feedback and complaints and the like, and the people would get to feel so much closer to the development process.
...but that\'s just me ;)
-
Everyone can \'internal test\' if they want. But you have to build the client and server yourself. If they just handed it out and asked for people to test then there would be abut 100 people saying: \'It crashes when I jump\', which isn\'t very helpful. If you can build it, then you should be able to give some more technical info/try to fix it yourself.

blueCommand, you lazy bum! XD Hehe, I can\'t talk, since I have no job. (But then, I\'m still in school...)
I think you (eh, the devs) should finish it, announce a release date for a week later, and release it the next day, suprising everyone and all that good stuff! Then all will be well... ^_^

Not many programming jobs for a 14 year old kid :)
-
:O
You must be like... a prodigy or sumthin. Either that, or you have a lot of time on your hands to learn how to program... I am trying to learn (I\'m ~ your age) but I have so many things that people make me do. (Must kill the inventor of chores)
josePhoenix
-
The younger you start, the easier it is to learn. So if you start programming when your 8 (;)) then you\'re going to know quite alot by the time you are 14. :)
-
I started when I was 12 I think. I know a lot of C and C++, perl, and HTML :D
I can do java if I really care to (I HATE JAVA)

Bah, HTML doesn\'t count :P HTML means hypertext markup language. markup ain\'t programming... although html and creative use of tables has become something of an art >_>
I know a small amount of c++ (well, I consider it small... I know the most c++ of anyone on my street, but then again, its all relative!) and I know html, and I know ehh... not much else ;)
josePhoenix
EDIT:Excessive Linebreaks
-
I started at around 12 too. Learned HTML + javascript, then Perl (first CGI, now more system utils), PHP, C++, Java (I love java\'s good OO support), XML, XHTML/CSS (yes theres a difference), and now I am 16 (bday was a week ago) ;)
So yes, if you get started early... one technology leads to another and you eventually become proficient in everything. Tip: Google always helps :).
It sucks being unable to use your skills because you are young, because you have no credentials, etc. I did make ~$300 off Rent-A-Coder (http://www.rentacoder.com) for a few years ago (it was a ripoff, but I just wanted some cash anyway).
But it is great to be able to donate your time to an OSS project. I\'ve always wanted to help one out, but I can never find the time. Junior year in HS after this summer won\'t help :). Maybe I\'ll poke around the sources and submit a patch if I see anything where I can be of help.
Note about HTML:
Early on, I had a very basic knowledge of HTML. I could make tables, use
, etc. Over time, I discovered the standards movement and semantic HTML (ALA is a good site: http://www.alistapart.com). Now I pride myself in using DIV\'s in favor of tables and writing semantic markup styled with CSS. IMHO if you can\'t write valid XHTML, you don\'t know HTML. Tables are so 90\'s. :)
-
Wow! This suprised me. I was out at camp for 2 weeks and all I thought of was hoping CB would be out by the time I got back(lol). Well its not out but its alot closer! All I can say is I hope the Mac version is coming along just as fast!
To the developers:
thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you

I LOVE YOU!
heh I can\'t wait
P.S. (I read this while typing) well wadaya know I\'m 12 and know quite a bit of html and looking into C, C++, and Java. YAY! I have hope.
-
So, all we can do is hope that there are absolutely no bugs in the internal testing.....hmmm, sounds fun.
-
Hope there are no bugs or only little tiny ones, So they suggest its really close right before i go away on holiday!
-
can you give us more information about how combat works or do we have to wait
-
Have a look at this. Hope it helps
http://www.planeshift.it/player_combat.html
-
That guide doesnt say if we can fire magic balls in a combat!(Would be good if they had the magic guide open!)
-
Will this have AD&D rules? Dice rolling and modifiers and the sort are kewl.
-
wooo hooo!!! I am 14, and I know absolutely nothing about programming!! but I really want to learn :(. anyone out there looking for an apprentice, let me know, I am desperate for that vault of programming knowledge. :p
Contact me through this thread if you must, I am dead serious :D

Just for future reference, and to try and save you some grief later on, you should probobly have posted that in a new thread. Anytime you want to start a new topic you should do it in a new thread. Otherwise you are hijacking someone elses thread, which normally isn\'t recieved well.

Makes me think of the Pen & paper powergamer article thing....
PS: Taldor: What were you smoking when you made that signature? xD
-
Hmm.. dice rolls are kind of tradicional in Role Playing, just look at NeverWinter Nights...
-
Traditional, yes. If it isnt borked dont fix it :P
-
Traditional for Black Isle games, yes. BG, BG exp, BG 2, BG 2 exp, IWD, IWD exp, NWN, NWN exp 1 and 2, and all other of such games they made are pretty much D&D on computer. However dicerolling isn\'t D&D, it\'s used in all pen and paper RPGs, no matter which ruleset you use, and it\'ll be used in PS in some form or another. You will not necessarily have any part in rolling the dies, but they will be rolled anyhow, whether you want it or not. It\'s a part of the game mechanics.
-
Yes, things will be random... that is until we discover the creation of the universe... and then we will be able to predict the future! mwahahahaha
-
@icebr4kr : o.O
I think keeping the /roll command is a good idea, since using that, a player could invent a \"mini-game\" on their own and publish the ruleset... Wouldn\'t it be nice to have someone challenge you to a game of whatever and you could say \"Hey, I wrote the rules for that game!\"
It would also be nice if there were traditional playing cards (2-10 jack, queen, king, ace). Perhaps these and the dice could (at some later date, of course) be animated objects in the planeshift world. Ehehe, imagine what shuffling would be like...
Uh, oh.. this is tending slightly off-topic :P
josePhoenix
-
There will be randomising, sure. This is what the dice are meant to represent, but of course they can\'t do this perfectly. That is why there are so many different dice around: to be able to get better greanularity. A Computer can easily randomise on odd numbers, whereas a 7 sided die will be hard to create IRL.
Amyway, the idea for player-created games is cool. However, how is that supposed to be implemented?
IMO, the player would need to code the rules in some sort of scripting language, and then submit it to the PS library of games. A potential player can then select from this library (or a subcategory). It would be nice if the games are only accessible if you have heared of them and been told the rules at least once (or read them).
The scripting language might be a deterrent for non-programmers, therefore, a simple alternative could be implemented. It would have some options and edit boxes, but of course you\'d probably not be able to implement the most flexible of system. poker and tic tac toe are somewhat dissimilar...
-
That\'s why I thought we\'d first only have a deck of cards and some dice (plus score card, could make yahtzee (IIRC they have it in Germany as well, called something like Kniffel (sp?)) but that could just be my overstuffed brain again) having to download graphics from the server (f.i. tic-tac-toe pieces) would be a royal pain in the patootie. The programming language is adding more structure to it (for the better, of course) than what I originally meant. I meant that even right now, here in MB, people could us ethe dice-roll feature and create rules around that to make a mini-game.. of course this makes it easier to create variations, but you have to actually know the rules (and remember them o.o)... This could be combined with a book-publishing job to publish rule manuals (more like pamphlets) that cost, say 2-3 tria and enable a choice on the games menu when in a tavern....
Sudden brainfart: These could also be used to settle disputes non-lethally... Whoever wins the game of Tavarisolitaire (Yes, Tavaris is my character...) gets the deed to the land... Wait, solitaire is a single-player game... nevermind...

Ya know, I kep seeing people say this, and apparently they haven\'t been to as many gaming cons as I have. http://shop.store.yahoo.com/gsonline/7sideddice.html
*edit- tried to put an image in and it didn\'t work*
Notice how the sides are different shapes, yet the same surface area = same probablity.
Amyway, the idea for player-created games is cool. However, how is that supposed to be implemented?
Well, the devs are working on some stuff I beleive. Acraig was talking about flags in the FPS sense, something that can be taged. And decks of cards as well as dice, but they were looking for suggestions for more simple things. As for a scripting language... let me just say \"player run quests\" and let you drool on that for a while :D
Oh, and as for games arleady being done, has everyone forgotten draklars combat system already? Ok, so it wasn\'t that detailed, and gave bonuses to older players, but it\'s something.
http://www.freewebs.com/draklar
-
As long as the system is not based on only on variable it is good...i played some online games like...Tibia...and that game that shall not be named...i couldn\'t believe how crap the battle system was and for that matter magic system...although i gave it a shot playing Tibia nearly a year...it\'s just too boring...
Hm...as for programming talk...well i am 17 and i only know PHP and thats only in moderate way...i only learnt it out of revenge...:P and created my little php strategy...as for C...C++ i am trying to learn them although i have so little time...well i\'m gonna study that sort of thing in uni...but i need a good base to study on...Java...Java...how i hate that good for nothing crapsticle...HTML and it\'s variants are just stupid...good thing i have my friend to make websites...:P
LOL who knows maybe someday i\'ll be helping planeshift...that would be an honor to me...:P
