Title: Non-Traditional Armor is also a good thing
Post by: Kuiper7986 on July 11, 2004, 04:39:10 am
You know how you play Spoonscape or TlBiA, and a lot of MMO\'s where the armor is the same everytime. I mean in Spoonscape its all the same armor except different metal? Well it honestly gets boring.

Armor doesn\'t have to be metal plates and chains. Some armors that look really odd are really cool also. Like this pic of Voldo (The one from Soul Cal and Soul Blade, remember?) I mean his armor covers his eyes and mouth, I mean it looks cool. I just think that reptative armor gets old and its kinda played out.

And maybe there are some people who are like rangers or some kind of freelancing light fighter, they\'d choose protection more of this kind...

EDIT: I know this is leather but its not just like a leather plate like in most MMOs or  Online MUDs

point is, plate, chain, and leather can\'t be the only armor available, I mean of course it should be in like I said but in my opinion some of the crazy looking armor looks really nice. Especially Voldo\'s...

I think the armors will be varied with the heavy medium light stuff, but yeah having the exact same armor as everyone else does get dull, maybe they will make it so that armor smiths can somehow custimize their creations.

PS. yeah voldo rules(even if he is disturbing sometimes)

Perhaps they could actually do some realistic armor.  It\'s always funny when a female character puts on stronger armor and ends up taking off more clothing.  Apparantly in everyother game, they are immune to swords to the stomach.

Why not have individual pieces of armor? Instead of buying Steel Plate Armor, you could buy Steel Plate Shoulder Pads. Of course, you could buy a whole set, too, but say if someone wanted only armor on their arms, and none on their chest and stomache (maybe just because it looked really cool). Individual pieces of steel armor combined with leather armor you had before simply because you cant afford a whole set right now. Plus it would add great diversity to the game.

Of course they are! The monsters got basic training before being released into the wild. monster Training chapter 1, section a:

Don\'t give a female adventurer a sword to the stomach. That is no way to treat a lady!

I think that must be done away with. Plus, the devs save the time they would have spent giving the monsters basic training ;)

yes pieces work also very well. Maybe you want bronze shoulder pads but want to wear leather vest or you can just buy a bronze plate that occupies both slots for the shoulder and torso.

Yeah pieces of armour would be cool, think of it you could finally have barbarians who actually looked like barbarians (you know motley armour half of the body not protected etc..).  Or you could look like a Roman gladiator with a bare chest (not one for the ladies I\'m afraid :P) and full plate armour down their sword arm.

Individual pieces could be a bit of a problem though.
when you got individual pieces of armors, there are many combinations, that means many visual gliches (like parts of the hand armor piece going \'inside\' the breast armor piece while walking).
It will also mean a bit more complicated armor rules.
Besides that, wearing a few totally diffrent armor pieces could look really awkward...

So how about this:
There will be armors of diffrent metals kinds, each with diffrent types of armor for every armor.
All the pieces of your armor are allowed to be of any type and class, but must be of the same metal type.
E.g. You can wear a bronze (metal) heavy (class) Uber Armplates of Doom +3 (type), and a bronze (metal) light (class) Stealthy Legplates of Stealthiness +2 (type) even though they\'re of diffrent classes and types because it\'s the same metal.
You can\'t, however, wear iron heavy Uber Armplates of Doom +3 and steel heavy Uber Armplates of Doom +3 even though it\'s the same class and type, because the metal is diffrent.

This way you can wear many diffrent kinds of armor in diffrent shapes and rules, but they\'ll fit eachother in color.

You could do it on the metal but what if I wanted to be like a knight, who infact wore; leather armour on top of their clothes, chain mail over that and plate mail on top of all that (at least this applied to their chest and head, I don\'t know if this protection extended to protect their limbs, but I may be wrong).

Maybe they could have it sorted by class and layer.  In this system there are five classes:

1)Clothing
2)Jewelry
3)Light Armour
4)Medium Armour
5)Heavy Armour

There are also six layers numbered one to six.

Certain classes can only go on certain layers:

Clothing: Most clothing is worn on layers one or two (in the case of jewelry underneath, or even underwear for that matter) though some articles of clothing maybe worn over armour e.g. cloaks, coats and robes. N.B. Some types of clothing maybe worn on any layer.

Jewelry: May be worn on any layer.

Light Armour: In general worn on layers two and three, though may be layer one if desired.

Medium Armour: Worn on layers three or four, no exceptions.

Heavy Armour: Worn on layers four or five, again no exceptions.

This makes it so that people only wear things correctly e.g. no leather armour over/with full plate.  And hopefully people wont feel the need to wear really strange combinations.

having all the armor from being the same type of metal, wouldn\'t that be really limited? Well its true that what people wear usually tell a lot about themselves.

I mean for example, here\'s two pics from FFX2:

The one on the left is the FFX2 Animal Trainer Costume and the one on the right is the FFX2 Beserker Costume. Personally which one would you think fits the animal trainer costume if Planeshift had to choose one. I mean its really up to the person and how they percieve it. A person a little less aggressive would choose [A] but someone whose a bit more aggressive would choose .
This char is Yuna so its from a female perspective but my point is still the same.

Final point: We\'re all different, some people like more exotic armour some people like classic armour, it\'s just all by what you believe most suits you and your taste and liking.

it would be cool to have amour to suit the game in other words having newly named amour like zargonit or something. and maybe it would have spikes or swirles or something graphicaly sticking out of it so that not only would it increase the defense of your alt but would make you look a lot cooler.. maybe the better the amour the better it looks on your alt..

maybe amour that you can enhance? ie you could place a spell on it to give you some form of enhance ment and then maybe it would glow or you would have bless rings floating around you..?

bit of a silly request but might be cool..

There must be dissadvantages for carying lots of armour/clothes/jewlery!
Would you want to gp onto battle wearing heavy iron armour, hesvy leather armour, bronze trinkets and a weapon?

but then no one would want to wear such amour... maybe having 10% of the stength bonus going into carrying the equipment to reduce this weight would be good..

the higher the strength the less the weight has an effect on you (happens in real life why not impliment it into the game)

Many thanks,
  Danny

Yeah of course there is, but some people see it as an advantage (as long as they don\'t get off their mount.

Sure, again on a mount.  Though the Romans wore plate mail and chain mail together but they didn\'t have the leather (and the plate mail was probably a lot lighter than a knights full plate).

I think Morrrowind had the pieces of armor system pretty good... they have shoulder pads, chestpad, and the rest. I dont know how many pieces you guys were thinking of though. You could separate the leg armor into 1)shin pad-like armor, 2)upper leg armor, and 3)boots. Or you could have legs all one piece like in spoonscape... It all depends on how far you want to take it.

The only MMORPGs I played were Runescape, Planeshift, and Final Fantasy XI (FFXI being the better of them but still majorly flawed and Square-Enix doesn\'t listen to the communties wishes :( ) And runescape is bland, PS doesn\'t have anything yet really that I could see and FFXI was pretty good for some things.
The way FFXI worke dwas you could get gloves, boots, leg armor, torso armor, cape, hat and jewelary. Armor fit with a variety of classes at lower elvels and you could combine pieces from different sets: Normal clothng, Robe Clothing, Tunics, Monk Clothing, Bronze Clothing, Leather Clothing,Scale Armor, and Lizard Skin armor. You ould combine all these to your liking from levels ranging from 1-15. This was good but you\'d find many people just wearing the sets at the corresponding levels. And everyone looked the same even though they were different classes. To top it off in higher levels the same armor appeared just under different names and stats. This was a real piss off. A level 30 doesn\'t want to look like a level 12!. I tihnk what Plane Shift could learn from this is have class specific clothing and have 4 varieties each with 4 colours (For example have a shirt, vest, sweater, and jacket all at level one and have them have 4 or 6 different colours) for  a level. This would give people different looks while maintaining similar stats. Oh and never repeat the same equipment choose later in levels. If your gonna make a jacket at level 20 with high stats and it\'s identical to a jacket at level 1 thats a no no. At least make a variation to explain why this jacket is better. Maybe it has tin plates on the shoulders and is laced with crystal string.

Alot of  Variety may seem overwelming in the beggining but at least we won\'t have exact look alikes running about. Another mistake FFXI made was not showing capes, cloaks, backpacks, or amulets. This shouldn\'t be the case in PS. People should be able to see a shimmering amulet and say \"That amulet seems familiar. Hey that belongs to my grandmother thief!\"
I know it\'d be tricky to get so many graphics but it\'d be worth it in the long run. And on the not of character variation there should be alot more then just colours. I made my human and was dissapointed to see that I could only make his hair change color. What if I don\'t want a beard or i want longer hair. Do i have to go and be an elf now?. I say to solve this problem just make say 10 face and 10 hairstyles and be able to change the color of hair and skin. And what if we want to be tall or chubby? Give us the choice of different body builds. I mean not everyone is in perfect shape even if they are adventurers. Whew I\'ve gonna and made a ridiculously long post sure ^_^ I\'ll stop now.

i also think that customisable capes would be a cool idea so that you dont look alike.. maybe you could upload an image and it would apear on your cape or you could change the colour of your cape... it would also be cool for guilds because then all there members could wear the same cape be kinda cool.. might not work to well though with the uploading images thing.. maybe you could have preset ones that you can change the colour of..

Many thanks,

Well prehaps the Devs could make capes for well recognized guilds every month or something. have guild competitions to get a logo and then the guild leader could ask for a sensible logo and the PS owners could make a cape or armor with that logo and give it to the guild members. Might work
