If you are using Kazaa to download things or you always visit random sites and download things I suggest going to
www.download.com (http://www.download.com)
And search for SpyBot, its completely free and works rather well first time I used it, the program grabbed 271 lethal spyware programs and when it was done cleaning it had all gone but 2 and even then it reseted itself and on the next run around it grabbed the last 2!
If anyone else has other free programs that could aid us go ahead and post the url, I am always open to try new things if it will help!
-
Depthblade, where was this thread 2 months ago?? I completely reinstalled my operating system to get rid of my spyware... oh well guess im just a sucker!
-
Yes Spybot Search & Destroy is the best Spyware remover out there, and its free. PC-magazine gives it excelent ratings, and from personal experience, it works great.
But yeah, Kazaa really screws up your comp...
-
Yay. The program found 21 spy wars and ad wars..now they are all gone! Thanks!
-
I tried SpyBot a while ago, but went back to AdAware 6. I don\'t think SpyBot worked as well for me in comparison.
-
OMG I found 204 spyware things on my comp!!!
Thanks depth^^
PS adaware has spyware or somthing like that in it
-

No, no it doesn\'t. Adaware is ok, but Spybot:S&D does a much better job. It will find stuff that Adaware doesn\'t find.
-
Haha 305 threats (its what they call them) 256 of them are gone, now I just have to restart the computer to get rid of the rest. You rule Depthblade
-
Adaware catches somethings that Spybot doesnt and visa-versa i personally use both :) havent had to worry about spyware ever since i started using them both... the only problem is that adaware sees something in spybot that it assumes is spyware... just ignore it and your fine......
and download.com has been getting worse and worse... service has gone from perfect to just above satisfactory...
they where perfect about 2 years ago :P
-
Spyware blaster (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html) is good too. It has a similar feature to the \"immunize\" setting of Spybot but with a bigger list. Basically blocks registry paths of known spyware.
Then you could also get a firewall. Zone alarm (http://www.zonelabs.com/) is a good one - although takes a while to set up at first. They have a free version in the direct links section on the bottom of the site.
-
If you like to install a bunch of random stuff or tweak settings I would recomend that you stay far far away from Zone Alarm. I had Zone Alarm once, but having a few different spyware programs removed and a few VPN clients installed corrupted Zone Alarm. Once Zone Alarm is corrupted you can\'t access your network, or the online instructions for fixing it(uninstalling Zone Alarm will only make things harder to fix). Use a hardware firewall, or maybe a Linux firewall(can be extreamly thurough).
-
You should choose the soft you use more carefuly.
Kazaa is evil, i wonder why so many people still use .
You should think about some open source alternatives. Like Bit Torrent and Direct Connect ++(i like the RevConnect mod).
But Kazza isnt the only cause. Another very evil thing is Internet Explorer. Firefox and Opera are much better. Never install evil shaware programs and other \"free\" commercial crap, they often contain spyware, i always search for Open Source alternates, because they never contain such evil things. mIRC is also evil, use X-chat insted.
So far the only free commercial program i like is Skype.
-
Using Kazza is just asking to have your computer messed around with. Sites containing illegal stuff always have spyware *looks at FESFES*
SpyBot is the best spyware remover around and if it cant detect it... I laugh at you! :P
-
Spybot is not the best remover. HijackThis is the best remover for browser based adware.
-

Yes, but make sure that you know for sure that the registry items you are removing are adware.
In case you don\'t know or aren\'t sure, you can post the results of your scan at HijackThis\' message boards.
-
I wonder why people know nothing about these programs. I have known all of these proggies for a long time but well.. I never use em or any anti-virus proggies or firewalls or Stuff.
-
Spyware and adware should be ilegal. If it already is then it should be inforced.
-
I always run both antivirus software (AVG) and anti ad software (ad aware) my comp takes a little hit in performance but nothing noticable in daily use, only on benchmarks and even if it did I think it may be worth the small sacrifice to save me the hassle of editing registries.
-
I use Mcaffe virus scan 2004 and it has done a MUCH better job than norton and I also use spybot for finding spyware because Mcaffe is no good at that
-
It must be realized no matter what program you use there will always be more spyware or something hiding that is more advanced or newer that can\'t be picked up...so just keep updating cleaners try new things and hopefully your computer can hang on until the day where harmful programs will be destroyed for good...that day will never come so keep updating :)
-
You never know Depthblade, maybe when the sun goes super nova(is that what is going to happen, I forget) then the programs may just be destroyed :P

Well first the sun will expand burning the earth to a crisp, then the earth will be engulfed in the giant expanding sun, then it will go nova. :)
-
Well if my comp survives the big booooom then Ill be happy^^
-
You love your computer more than yourself? And I thought I was bad...
-
lol Gorbulas , I don\'t think thats what he meant and thx for clearing that up Melbourne.
-
try ZOne Alarm, keeps ports secure and only allows certain progs you select to have internet acces, it will alwasys ask b4 leting something have accses.
http://www.zonealarm.com
sry for spellin errors, i type it in like 3 seconds b4 school
-
meh first your signature is wy to big wise and it sucks ^^ Secondly stay the hell away from Zone Alarm it doesn\'t do crap all basicly is just another firewall that gets in the way asking for permission for everything when your busy trying to do stuff! Actually I would say that about most firewalls USELESS, if people actually want to get into your computer no firewall is going to stop them!
-
Well for those running with no anti-virus or just a really crappy one and are in need of something really good for free. Today is your lucky day :P
http://www.avast.com/
avast! Home Edition is now free of charge for HOME users for NON-COMMERCIAL use.
It will alert you when a virus is found and automatically upgrades the database constantly. It is not a trial, It doesn\'t limit upgrades its 100% free :P

I found that like aaggggges ago ^^ :P Keep up :D

The new windows beta one is actually pretty good, even though it is microsoft, but swallow your pride and go download it (\'cause it\'s free :D ) It is excellent, and has a cool theme based on windows longhorn.
Edit: spyware remover that is, and the xp sp2 firewall is pretty good too, because they ripped a lot of the features from iptables :D personally I use linux, so I have no problems at all with spyware and adware :P
-
ZoneAlarm.
Adaware.
AVG.
Spybot S&D.
Ctrl-Alt-Del.
Know them. Use them.

AVG? anyone who has ever used AVG Free knows it misses a lot of stuff.. AntiVir (http://www.free-av.com/) works a lot better and finds many more virsuses than AVG does .. I suggest switching to it

One word -
LINUX
Use That !
(or if you really love giving billy some pocket money, at least use firefox!)
-
This doesnt really have to do with security but you guys should try out a program called Regseeker. It will remover un-used or invalid registrys from your comp. Just a warning though. Know what youre doing before you do this. If you remove some windows componenet dont come crying to me. :P

Surprise! Some of us actually have to have compatability and share our computers with e-mailing type people.
Other than that, I\'d love to. :P
I love firefox, btw. ...my brother still won\'t convert to it though. :(
-
How old is your brother? If he is younger than 10, he\'s fine, any older and not using firefox should be a sin :D You couls always use a live cd if you want linux but can\'t install it, slax is a nice one, smallish too.
-
meh whether or not its new still nice to share what you know with people incase they are in need :P
If your willing to spend a buck or two over the internet for a GOOD anti-spyware program I suggest XoftSpy its amazingly fast and efficent :P
-
Using IE at any age is terrible. You should have it removed(or at least dissabled with a firewall) from your PC IMMEDIATLY to avoid being attacked by some virus your brother picks up. Microsoft should be sued into oblivion for installing that backdoor on everybodies PC(it is almost a law that all PCs come with Windows installed. Something about stopping piracy).
-
I use both Ad-aware and Spy-bot search and destroy. Both of them work well and I use them everday. HEHE. And I use Norton and AVG together with the Spy-ware programs and my firewalls and I have a perfectly safe computer. I also use anti-hacker programs as well. HEHE
-
Your using two firewalls? and I thought my mom was a moron when it came to computers! (she is a very nice mother really, but computers aren\'t her thing :D ) Using multiple firewalls doesn\'t help at all! they cancel each other out, so your getting no firewall protection! ( I think I\'ll hack your pc to show you what I mean :) ) Uninstall the \"lesser\" firewall, i.e. zonealarm or avast if you have mcafee or norton, if you have just free firewalls, just use avast! for firewalling your pc.
Edit: I type badly, so many spelling errors!
-
You can try hacking into my computer but you won\'t get in, Trust me. I have some of the best anti-hack programs ever made and my firewalls aren\'t fighting they are actually working together, I think :(

i see no point... and windows is easy, no matter what firewalls, or how many you use.. firewalls made for windows are really just there for a sense of security.. so many backholes are left open for the simplest of things :D
-
OK i love spy-bot but its outdated itself. now i use webroots spysweeper in combo with an updated norton.
as far as firewall i have my own. also IE shot be deleted as soon as u unbox your PC. ummm wait first go download firefox then delete burn exorcize pray wish on shooting star. do whatever it take but get IE off your pc.
By the way not getting viruses is not that hard to manage I havent had a virus since 01. and spyware is deleted daily. so my little weak PC works great.....

Mate I have bad news for you no matter how strong you think your set-up is the wall will always fall. It just takes time and the right person with the right abilities don\'t be so confident I would hate to see you suddenly disappear because of your bragging on this thread :P

If it wasn\'t so pitiful, it would be the most hilarious thing I\'ve read this week. :)
-
Well he can learn from this thread, there are lots of tips here.
-
There should be a stickied thread for these kind of things a big list of free protection programs and p2p and can be constantly updated.
-
There is. All over the Internet, my friend. There\'s no need for us to go posting threads about every single thing people should know as common sense already.
-
Why p2p, how often is it used for legal things? It isn\'t being used for ps distribution, well they use bittorrent, but that is a different form of p2p, and it isn\'t used for hosting the website, so what would be the point?
-
cant delete IE if it wasnt there to begin with... i think the world should all go linux... be a safer place you know :D
-
Safe P2P program lists is actually a great way to prevent spyware. Some of them come bloated full of spyware and backdoors. Only download BitTorrent and BitTornado for BitTorrent. If there is a lite version of some P2P app, only use the lite one.
-
like ares, which has a lite version
-
What the RealGorbulas said about Bittorrent is certainly not strictly true - most clients are spyware free, not just the feature-limited BitTornado and the offical client. Another free/spyware free program is Azureus. If you don\'t agree, read the source of it.
Other non -lite p2p apps that are safe include Emule, as well as many Kad clients and DC++ clients. There is no reason to break the law and use a hacked lite version when the open source community offers you the same thing, minus the jail time.
-
Could anyone tell me how to rmove IE? Or completely disable it? I use that Gmail notifyer that was posted here a while back and that still opens up with IE......
-
Get ZoneAlarm or something and don\'t allow iexplore or explorer to access the internet. This might cause some problems though... Maybe just set all the security options in IE to their highest and then avoid using it.
-
Perfect. Thanks for your help. all you can do with IE on my comp now is double click my little Gmail notifyer on the bottem right and veiw my mail.
When I find out how to set Firefox for the default Ill just completely disable everything in IE.
EDIT change Firefor to the gmail default :)
If IE was a back door, mine would be made of titanium and have 349348 locks on it. And no hinges :D
-
actually, there is a free program called ieradicator, but I wouldn\'t use it, because you have to have ie for windows update.
-
safe p2p
the best one i know of is shareaza spelled something like that.
it contains no spyware but a little slow
-
Bearshare beats eveything for sure. It come with Sav! and Weahercast which ar spyware but you can easyly reomve them. I usually get about 100-300 kbs from bearshear too. None of the thing are fake eighther. I remember back in the Kazaa days you could download somthing only for it to turn out being a music file that doesnt work etc.
-
:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:( This is nooo bull but I\'m am not joking someone has really hacked my computer. I found it yesterday And it has tonnes of things that have been deleted and stuff. Soo with one of you ases hacked my computer :(:(:(:(:(:(:(. And just to tell you I am not bulling. :(
-
you want to keep your computer safe, start off without an internet connection, configure your computer ( that it won\'t startup with msn.com anymore ), get yourself some good software to help you out.
but to stay 100% safe against hackers, crackers, spyware, virusses, troyans etc etc etc,you have to kill ur internet connection now, and never plug it in again, don\'t buy games and do install programs, just ur OS and nothing else.
-

sorry man, i must tell you.. its your own downfall, and it could have been just a passerby, none of us... well it wasnt me... i was too busy doing other things like Simcity4 and trying to fix my Debian installation...
to remove IE:
Start->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs->Add/Remove Windows Components and unclick IE ... cha cha!
you can also removed MSN Explorer and MSN Messenger here, just unclick them :)
-
I didn\'t do it if you suspect me :D I am too lazy! Told you two firewalls don\'t help! I would unplug your internet while you fix it, then plug it back in and set up a good firewall, also if you have siblings, check if it was one of them! I am sorry for you though :(
To harkin: ha! trying to fix a debian install, for the amount of trouble that will take, why don\'t you just install gentoo :D
-
Thus we learn a great lesson today. Do not gloat about how \"invinsible\" your computer is, because it isn\'t. There is a very good reason.
Hackers/crackers/phreakers (whatever they call themselves) break past security systems to prove that they can. They don\'t necessarily have anything against you, but if you go around yelling you have fifteen firewalls and the most intelligent anti-hack systems known to man, you will attract ALOT of hacker attention, and they will try you to see just how hard your system is to crack.
Unfortunately this advice comes too late for one of us... but it is a lesson he has learned the hard way instead.
-
Clap Clap Clap, and now, a moment of silence in remembrance of verideon\'s lost files. :(
-
My school got really paranoid after loosing their network for 3 weeks, and now regularly run AVG and 3 spyware programs. i think they had a massive amount on each computer...
-

Well, if it had been me, then
1) you wouldn\'t be missing anything, maybe except Internet Explorer, as one shouldn\'t use it anyway ;) and
2) instead I\'d have left a simple note somewhere prominent (startup screen probably) to tell you that you\'d been hacked.
-
Norton>Mcaffee
ad-aware se=Spybot s&d
Microsoft=Evil
IE=Microsoft
Firefox>IE
(by a freaking lot)
Zone alarm=free pain in the ass
(still better than nothing)
[as someone mentioned earlier there are some files in spybot (decoy \"bots\" actually) which ad-aware recognizes as spyware/adware which basically just means that the files work as their pupose is to \"confuse\" the site which sent you the malware and \"trick\" it into \"thinking\" that the malware still exists on your computer after deletion. However this is easily surmounted by carefully excluding spybot* files from deletion.]
on another note someone has already mentioned the rumor that Ad-aware 6.0 (unsure of this applies to new SE build) personel(free) addition contains adware within it. However while i cannot provide further clarification upon the issue i can express my opinion that this is merely a rumor as ad-aware is in the end hoping to get your money and that free build is advocated as useful and necessary tool far too widely across the...errrm tech?... community for there to be any real truth behind the matter. Again this is my PERSONEL opinion i cannot prove the issue either way and in the end is a risk which is entirely up to you to take.
P.S.
http://www.pcpitstop.com has a variety of useful evluation tools to check up on computer performance
*just realized i typed spyware earlier instead of spybot sorry if i confused anyone-Tarach
-
That is some nice clarification Tarachnul, and I agree with Seytra, I would have just left a note on the desktop or in the start menu, I can just see windows xp\'s little note system: \"You have new hacked text messages installed, click here to access them.\" :D
-
Well, what the heck, here\'s my pwnage :)

For the IE part there, it will just remove the shortcuts.
Why? Because Internet Explorer and Windows Explorer (Everything the windows shell is) is one mind, one body more or less today, it\'s IMPOSSIBLE to remove it 100% from XP or newer.
For the ones out there feeling safe, never do.
I spent most of my 13-14 (lame) years.. how should I put it?, re-convincing people their computer weren\'t safe.
Having more than one firewall is IMO just a waste of resources since the first should be enough. If it isn\'t, you made a bad choice.
For the illegal part, spyware/adware is illegal if it installs by itself. But it rarely does (Look in the beginning of the license aggreement you get when you sign, if the company differs in the top from the company in the footer, you can be sure to 90% that you\'re installing something else too)
//blue
-
what a wonderful term, \"re-convincing\" :D I do that sometimes, but not to people I have come into contact with, like verideon. I agree with you about windows explorer, but there are other file explorerers you can get to replace windows explorer, just google it, most of them have cool extra features to boot !
-
bleh, everyone just switch to linux and firefox... everything would be fine...
besides i doubt anyone could ever find my actual IP, i cant even discover it :P only IP i ever see is the one set by comcast, and all four of our computers use that one as a gateway, followed by the network IP and then all the linux masking... yeah fun...
-
If only such a fix was easy to do :D
-
May I just point out that common sense beats any firewall/antispyware programs. I didn\'t have any firewalls antispyware or antivirus programs on my PC at all while I was running windows. Make sure that you\'re running firefox, stop looking at porn sites, stop downloading random crap, stop clicking on ads, stop opening \"YOU HAVE JUST WON BLAH!!!\" emails, don\'t download attachments from emails you don\'t know who are from, and read the license agreement if you ever have to install free software. You will never have a problem. I\'m running Gentoo now instead of windows and it\'s pretty secure, much more secure than windows, but not uncrackable. Just make sure you don\'t do anything dumb and you\'ll be ok.
Remember, the majority of things that get downloaded and installed on your PC are done by you, not automatically without any user input.
-
I have Ad-Aware SE Professional and Spybot - Search & Destroy Pro, put them together and nothing can break through... :D
PS. I could let you download them both for free but i dont know if there are \'Copyright\' people out there, so i will try and stay on the safe side ;)
-
aye, im running debian, with a side XP install for a few games... i had gentoo, but ran a little slow on my computer, while compiling stuff, debian seems to work a lot better, sides a few minor problems...
my XP install has just what it needs, antivir, nvidia drivers, logitech mouse&keyboard drivers, motherboard drivers and a few games, SimCity4, Morrowind... just for when i have nothing better to do...
-
Ok this is good news. I ran my system restore and got all of my missing programs and files back :). and also I removed one of my firewalls and kept my good firewall. I have a bit of hope in my computer\'s security but I suppose I have no choice but to trust my comp\'s security :(
-
just thought id point it out....
never think your safe cuase thats when your not... and you do stupid stufff like post that your protection is invincible on a PUBLIC forum... oh and btw u dont want \"invincible\" protection you want \"invisible\" protection . for example a way of subverting malware with dummy files so that whoever sent it doesnt send more.
on another note...
Xordan- good advice but... while the majority of harmful...errm...stuff... is downloaded as a direct result of your(the user\'s) actions there is still a fairly large amount of \"stuff\" which isnt and can screw you over for no reason. As such it is always a good idea to have atleast one good anti-malware program, anti-virus program( i personally recommend Norton), and a decent firewall. (which i might add should be included in any atleast mildely tech-oriented persons definition of common sense)
-

Somebody still does that?! Darn it...
*starts to cry*
