Does anyone know if in the future they will be putting in a low detail mode... Im, and im sure may other people are running preity basic graphics cards. This does\'t cause a problem running the game untill i look at or get close to a large/interactve building. ive tried overclocking to the max but this Geforce 4\'s on its last legs.
Thanx in advance
Will :)

You needn\'t really worry about a low detail mode (Perhaps this belongs in the wish list forum?) But i seem to be running fine with an 8MB ( That\'s right 8MB!!) integrated video card just fine!
My good 128MB video card broke ;( ;( ;(

Most of the \"lag\" is really due to the memory leaks in the 3d engine, Crystal Space. A geForce 4 should suffice, at least for the current version. Make sure you are running in OpenGL rendering mode. :) Chances are, an option for lower detail will be added later for the benefit of people with slower/older graphics cards. At the moment all you can do is run at a lower resolution.

That\'s nonsese. The lag is NOT caused by memory leaks in the engine. Otherwise you would\'nt be able to continue playing for a longer time. The lag is caused by just the amount of objects that need to be drawn. Memory leaks have NOTHING to do with that.
In the next release we will add the option to remove objects in the distance in order to increase speed.

Oops. The leaks don\'t cause lag...
However, PS seems to suck up memory like a thirsty Chihuahua (though that could be problems with PS instead of CS)
jorrit, I thought that depth culling would be a top priority... of course, it probably is, just wasn\'t implemented at the time the \"feature freeze\" came for MB... I must check out the new renderer when I fix my boot record that windows farked.

Yep, there probably/will be options to help the game have better performance I guess.
-IF- the next release comes out ;)

this cant be lag.. cos other people seem to be fine... but if i get within 20 steps of the big bronz place or 5 steps of the inn i can only move at like 5fps!, my card is 128mb i just dont understand.. maybe my card has a problem.

- Committed first version of distance clipping a.k.a. farplane clipping
including config window where you can set this. Adaptive mode needs
some tweaking.
I would seriously doubt it is your graphics card that is causing the lag. Even players with the fastest hardware have lag such as yours. So no matter what we attribute the reason for lag to, it is not your hardware that has problems. Remember, CB will probably be a lot faster and I\'m sure future releases will focus on optimization since it is so critical to playability.

What sort of CPU do you have? I have a 1.9GHz & I usually get big lag when I run other stuff that uses the Internet like IRC & stuff?
I always close down most every program I can possibly & then it runs fine most of the time?
I have Cable Internet btw but I do not know why that would make any different?

All you need is a hugely overkill processor and it\'ll run great.
Firstly: Pentium processors are a no. They have awful memory processing.
Second: Athlon\'s can process alot more than pentiums in the same period of time, so anything over a 2600+ should run the game smooth.
Third: And Athlon 64 has an integrated memory controller, making it ultra fast when processing stuff in the ram. :) You\'ll have no problems. :)
Forth: Memory and graphics card do help, but as long as you\'ve got 512mb of ram and any card which is 3d as a min, you\'re fine if you\'ve got the processor.
The End.
(So it\'s processor which counts, don\'t listen to anyone else!!!)

This is not true. The processor is not the bottleneck at all. The two most crucial things for performance are memory and 3D card. Nearly all processing is done on the 3D card so having a better CPU does help but not THAT much. Having a better 3D card on the other hand can make HUGE differences.
Also going from 256->512 makes a huge difference too.

hmm, I\'m going from experience, and when I went from my Athlon XP 1600+ to my Athlon 64, with the same graphics card and Ram (Radeon 9800 Pro, and 512mb(before upgrading that)) I went from having major lag, to none at all.
(thebolt doesn\'t agree with you fully ;) I asked him :P)

Hey, its pre-alpha. You can\'t expect it to be perfect. Every time I run it my CPU is at 100%. And ive got alot af ram. Just wait till CB, it will run better.
-
I might be wrong.. But doesn\'t OpenGL use 100% of the CPU?

Well CS tries to render frames as fast as it can so it will always use 100% cpu.
