When CB comes out wont there be a few thousand people trying to download it causing horrable lag?
Well, here is my plan evryone wait for me to download it first........ :P
But really will there be really bad lag for the CB download?
-
This post will probably be closed when the moderators see it because it sort of a repeat post.
(So I must hurry?)
But in the other post, they said something about this not being a problem because it is all hosted by large download server design to handle this sort of thing, or that is what I got out of it?
-
Download server != Game server
+ we plan to release torrents and stuff
-
Ok thank you for your help you can close this if you want to I don\'t really see any point of leaving it open
-
I must have read it wrong?
*Shuts up about stuff he doesn?t know everything about*

Most likely you are referring to someone\'s (I think Vengance\'s?) comment that b/w stress will not be a problem since they have the sourceforge mirror network at their back :) I don\'t know if he factored in that not all mirrors update simultaneously so prdownloads.sourceforge.net may well be swamped by planeshifters (or prospective planeshifters) until another server gets a copy. Oh, well... by that time we will have brought OSDN to it\'s knees and they will have to bribe us with thinkgeek.com merchandise to get us to lay off :D

Torrents = really bright idea; takes the edge of the hits :D
-
Oh, yes, and for all you poor uneducated persons out there, remember to get a bittorrent client before the release of the torrents! (Meh, otherwise we\'ll have a good percentage of planeshifters pelting bittorent client download sites...) I strongly suggest Azureus (http://azureus.sf.net/), but you\'ll have to download the Java Runtime environment to get it working (most people have that, I think)

Do you really think there will be many more than, say, 200 ppl. downloading PS initially? 200 would be a piece of cake for the OSDN. Still, torrents would be good if just to keep the strain as low as possible.
I wouldn\'t count on everyone having the JRE, though, but there are many native clients as well.
-
Yea, there will be alot of people downloading... I think.
I\'ll tell everybody on the forums I frequent regularly. Good thing I\'ve forwarded my ports so if the downloads do get bogged down I can use the torrent.
-
I use the offical(I think) Python btdownloadgui and such. I only used it twice, but then I leave it running with a 30KB limit so that I can still use my internet connection until I shut down. Everyone make sure that if you are behind a NAT(almost any firewalling router) you a)redirect ports 6881-6889 to your PC, or b)set up port triggering so that 6881 opens 6881-6889.
-
I really really hope it doesnt lagg too much...

oh right..i knew that...
*shifty eyes*

OK heres my plan Im goin to sit on the PS dowload page constantly clicking refresh non-stop until I see the CB download and be the first to dowload it^^
-
there are 8902 members registred at the forums, how many are active planeshift fans? and how many are just waitning for CB?
and there are probobly a lot of people not at the forums to... I joined the forums after i played the game 3 month...
so, well, the first day maybe there only will be 200 people that will try to download, but there may be 8900+
(sorry for the english guys\'n lady\'s.)
-
I\'m gonna estimate that about 2000 people will try to download CB within the first three days its out which won\'t be pretty :P
-
To encourage the use of Bit Torrent the server based download should be delayed for a while.
-
I use Shareaza to download Anime,
I will help Torrent!
Maybe a 1 day delay to direct-download, also, they should be able to download the client 24h before they initialize the server, that way people won?t complain that it is slow?
I sort of want to see a hit counter on the ?how to download? page! That would be nice to see about how many people download the client? :D

To download torrents you need a source to download it from. Where would these sources get it from? Then again, if you put up torrents, don\'t you think they would be massively booked as well as the download servers?
The question is simply to limit the amount of people who are downloading things, and find good hosts which are capable of handling large amounts of users, such as fileplanet, sourceforge and other hosting companies. There are plenty of them, and I\'m sure at least some will be able to host the files.
-
If you only allow downloading through Bit Tirrent then only the people who cheat by turning off the uploads will have problems downloading. The data that you have already downloaded is sent off to the people who need it.
-
I\'d guess they\'ll trickle in like always...the most will probably happen a few days after the release, then it would level out I think. Who knows, maybe hardly anyone will download it, all that\'s really important is that it gets to you at all. It\'s not the end of the world if you have to wait a few more days extra to do so, not much to really worry about, unless of course you want to then knock yourself out.
And I hate Bittorrent. Doesn\'t work right with my connection.
But really, I don\'t know if I\'ve said anything, if I haven\'t then just note your all wrong. Or not.
Thought I would just cover all my bases...
-
Well if torrents are there I\'ll use them since I already have bit-torrent and more people will be using FTP

I\'ve seen torrents with one seed and 10000 downloaders that work fine and quite fast.
Needless to say though, I doubt sourceforge\'s download servers are really going to suffer on release date. There will be several thousand downloads in the first couple days, but these servers deal with a lot of downloads normally anyway. Either way, splitting everyone up over these servers and bittorent will be a good idea. I\'ll pick up whichever comes first, and seed for a while over bittorent so it can easily spread.
-
I\'m really glad that there will be torrents available. I\'m on ADSL (I\'m from Australia), but still large downloads get annoying. I use Bit Torrent for anime all the time, I love it. I\'ve also seen thousands of users getting torrents with one seed and had a fine download. If the source is reliable/capable, BT will be no problem.
I pity 56k users who will be downloading from the site. Limiting it to BT would be a very bad idea.
-
Noone said anything about limiting the download to BitTorrent. I know that wont happen at all, simply because that would be the most stupid idea ever. Not all people has access to it, where everyone has access to download things from a sourceforge FTP. Besides, sourceforge has 8 servers (or something like that), and 1000 users spread among those 8 servers if all people actually start downloading at the same time, will only be 125 users per server, which isn\'t a lot. Besides, the download is most likely to be some 200-300 MB, and most of the DSL users can finish that in two hours or less. That means more free space for other people, and more server bandwidth, and suddenly there aren\'t many people left. :)
-
shouldn\'t we be talking about things which have a more realistic time frame ?(. Like the nuclear burnout of the sun or the impending collision of andromeda and the milky way? :P.
No but seriously i know the devs are trying....trying.
And Bittorrent sucksX(. Maybe guy\'n\'gals who download CB can put it up on p2p networks. That way we can service more gamers in a less time.
How big is the distribution projected to be?
-
What? I did suggest limiting it to BT. Nobody seems to like that idea. Not even putting the torrent up an hour or less before the ftp link? Sourceforge probably won\'t appreciate it if they get even ten simultanius downloads of 300MB on each server.
-
Well what if they put a PS download on C-net (download.com) when I download somthing from there I get 300+ Kbs (i got cable) and it never lags or anything

And you base this on?
-
Well its a pretty random guess but I put a little thought into it :P. There are about 300 active people in PS and my guess is that there a few hundred to a thousand people waiting for combat to come which would make about 1200 people then 800 people would magicly appear :P. Well if you look on the PS site it shows that there are thousands of people registered and 2000 is a small fraction of them.
Any ways would my idea of puting a PS download on C-net work?

well, I think that\'s a pretty good indicator that someone DID suggest only using BT. Wouldn\'t you say Gronomist?

Man, i hope everyone else uses torrents! I hate the things. Never understood them, care to explain?
Will there be many mirrors?

torrents are simple
There is a seed,
this seed is the source for the torrent,
person A comes along, and downloads,
whilst downloading, person A simultaneously uploads,
person B comes along and downloads from both person A and the seed, and while downloading, also uploads, then person C comes along and so on.
I think that\'s right, someone correct me if I am wrong...
at the end of the torrent, the download puts itself together.

Yup, thats pretty much the idea. The neat thing about torrents is that when person B comes along, they will download a different part of the file from the seed which in turn they will start uploading to person A. (Bittorent basically segments the files in to a lot of pieces, so you can download any part of the file first, and forces you to download the rarest peice of the file first. It does hash checks on each piece so you don\'t get corrupted files like download accelerators).
So all in all, the more people downloading, the faster things go.

Personally, I\'m against it - which is mostly due to problems I\'ve had with them in the past.
The majority of the free clients are ad/spyware infested and unrelible at times. Also, it is likely scare off some of the more timid portions of the audience which probably isn\'t a good thing. IF a free, stable, and simple client was released alongside the torrent, and a clear guide on how to use it, it would probably be an acceptable means of distribution. Of course, the downside to that would mean time spent devloping/testing a BT client instead of working on/releasing the next phase of planeshift.
In conclusion, while it\'s probably something that should be taken under serious consideration, I don\'t think it\'s something that should be taken \"Completely\" one way or the other on.
-
I use the official from http://bitconjurer.org/BitTorrent/. There is no spyware in it.

That\'s what I use, and it\'s free, they just ask for donations every now and then
