As per ususal.. I did a search before making this thread.. so please don\'t flame me if I missed something.
I was thinking back to people\'s threads about what class they will model after, and what jobs they wanted and I came across something that made no sense to me.
ASSASSINS!
In a game such as this is projected to become... what use will assassins be?
EXAMPLE:
The Merchant RichGuy hires notorious assassin KillerGuy to kill ruthless guild leader BadGuy... KillerGuy stealthily kills BadGuy... BadGuy respawns and brings an entire guild after both KillerGuy and RichGuy if he finds out who hired KillerGuy. KillerGuy and RichGuy then respawn and either kill BadGuy again or do nothing.... Achieving precisely NOTHING!
IMO Assassins will be useless... they will never actually successfully complete a contract as the target will always respawn / be resurrected or whatever. I welcome your thoughts on the matter
-
I don\'t think that assassins will be useless in PS. think about quests where you have to kill sbdy! sure you can set up a whole army and storm the place, but maybe it will be easier for just an assassine to sneak in, kill the certain person quietly and sneak back out... as it is for killing non NPCs i guess you are more or less right. besides the fact that the victim may have to pass some death realm, hence there is a certain amount of time until the person is seen in our world again...
-
Assassins sneak around an opponent to stab them in the back gaining a critical strike bonus as their main advantage. Not to mention their awesome dodging skills and such.
Although because of the way pvp is being handled your going to have to use this tactic on monsters
-
Yeah, an assassin will be great in a group if you\'re fighting a really hard opponent. He\'d be able to get in the first hit, doing quite a bit of damage, and causing enough distraction to give the other guys time to get close/cast spells etc.

if you are an assassin they shouldn\'t be able to find out who you are hired by, so then you would go kill badguy, and steal his money.bring it back to richguy who gives you an award and part ways, badguy is death for some time he lost some money and his guild is left without a leader for some time.

I would think \"Assasins\" in guilds would come in useful in guildwars, skirting the edge of the battlefield to take down leaders or somesuch. Of course, assasins would be most useful during guildwars, because of the free PvP. That way an Assasin would be able to strike from the shadows, etc.
Still, assasinations (proper ones) should be a joint RPing collaboration between the client, the victim, and the assasin. An assasination is an excellent way to go out with a bang, so to speak. Say I\'m tired of playing my Alchemist. I agree OOCly to have him assasinated in some huge dramatic way, thus increasing the RP value of PS.
-
and with that i totally agree
all hail excalimug
-
On the other hand, if people drop items when they died, assasins would be VERY useful.
And if there was open PvP, which there isn\'t.
-
Meh Assasin\'s are useful or rather they would be useful especially if they had a cloaking system where they could take a swing at the enemy, stop moving and they would be cloaked invisible ^^ But I expect that won\'t happen
-
I see it like this.
A profession assassin uses a stealth mode and
slowly but patiently creeps by the guards of a town.
His mission is to kill a player named Joe to
recieve a reward from a player named Shmo.
With sweat on his forehead he slowly reaches the
victims house, getting ready to come out of stealth
mode he knocks on the door..
Meanwhile, Joe, the victim, is staying at home.
It\'s dark outside, so instead of going out of town, he
wisely decides to stay at home and work on his crafting
skills. After spending few hours macroing the skill, all
tired and annoyed after failing to craft another vase, he
hears a soft knock on the door. Puzzled
he goes to open the door. He turns the handle, and
SUDDENLY, a body appears with a knife ready to slash
his throat, and then a messege pops up.
\"Would you like to accept a challenge from AssassinExpert? \" Yes or No
Joe clicks No and closes the door.
Yet another failed attempt for AssassinExpert, he won\'t
be getting a reward tonight.. Ah maybe another time
:)

BUT the faq says that if you die you GO TO THE DEATH RELAM!!! NOT RESPAWN!!!!

hahaha sashok20, great post.
As far as I know CB won\'t have free pvp, it will have the possibility to duel if both parties agree. Maybe assassination missions will have more use in a post-cb update, but who knows? Cb isn\'t out yet so we can\'t really say much...

:) thanx
Yeah, free pvp won\'t happen and maybe for good reasons too. Of course professions such as assassins
and mercs will somewhat suffer since the only missions
they could be hired for is assassinate some npc or
protect a player from monsters etc.
p.s. just had some idea for pvp in my head, shouldn\'t
be in this post but here goes.. How about pvp be free
at night hours. So basically stealing and pking is allowed
at night for duration of about 5 minutes of real time,
while morning and day will last for about 30 minutes
and be completely no pvp.
This will make all who want pvp roam teh streets at night, while rest stay home and enjoy the 5 minute break

well assassins are quite weak in terms of defense and limited weapon choices. Because they have to move fast which means really light armor and have to attack quickly which requires light weapons that don\'t take a lot of weight. So they make up in their stealth and speed.

Thats pointless in PvP because, i believe it was jorrit, said if you\'re going to attack a player, the other player, must accept and acknowlegde to the fight. real point to stealth there!

Not quite :) You can have a always accept dual option, which would allow someone to sneak up on you, and also, you can freely attack in guild wars.
-
to note in cb i do believe that there will not be a full scale quild war type option yet. it is however believe that there will be an arena in which you can send your guild in on another guild and it most likely would be an open space so assassins are quite useless the only way it would be possible is if it were a maze like arena in which the assassin then could hide in a corner and wait for prey. :P
-
Thats an interesting point Mage of Darkness, why not have more irregular stadiums. Maze stadiums, stadiums with ladders and platfirms as well as tunnles. Also a sea stadium with sea battles would be cool.
Different stadiums would benefit assains by allowing them to sneak up on their prey.
-
then we would have Counter Strike, I believe the
map is called de_dust :D
jk,
cyberchu, arena is an arena, stadium is a stadium.
I understand your point, but think about it, there\'s
one huge stadium in CB and devs will not make some
weird maze right in the middle to satisfy needs of
some assassins.
Assassins just gonna have to wait till later updates
-
Well assassins do work (to a certain extent) in Huge pvp battles (if the lag doesnt get to you 1st) and only if they got some type of stealth. If mages have to be stationary to cast spell X (which takes 4 seconds but does ahelllota dammage ) in theory a fast moving stealth assassin could take the mage out before he finishes the spell
on a lighter note i\'ll make my money selling popcorn/hotdogs in the spectator stands :D
-
mmmmmm popcorn and hotdogs. but what bout the popcicles you got to have those as well as the peanuts and many other vending choices :O .
-
Maybe we could have a kind of \"bounty\" system?
Like, if you kill x city guards you will get a bounty on you, and the assassin that takes the mission will be free to PK that player
-
i think the best option is that everyone should be able to pk at all times...but get pk points for that.
cause it isn\'t terrible that ppl can pk since not everyone wants to pk, and the ppl who do will get pk points for every kill..or maybe every hit they make.
and once a pk-er reaches a certain amount of pk points..or even better when a pk-er gets killed, he has to go somewhere..where he can only get out when his pk-points are lower then... or just 0
and they dont drop from 1000 to 0 in 10 mins or anything but more like a couple of hours. So this will also prevent ppl from pk-ing. and if u do have ppl that just cant stop..then at least u wont have long trouble with them since they are spending half a dail..in jail or something.
-
even a small number of pks will terrorize the game.
no need for those complications, this is not pvp based
game.
-
Ok, I personally probably do not want open pk, but if that is the case, I would like to have a default option to not get pk\'d by someone like only people who turn pk on can pk, of-courses this will not effect arenas & that...
just I only want open pk if I don?t have to be bothered by it, this was probably said before but we could have open pk out in the wilderness were there is no law & near cities super guards with waste anyone who pk\'s anyone else... or they get in the way & takes hits, & they are always 2x more powerful then the people who are attacking them, I don?t know, I would rather only have pvp if you choose to or arenas & the like... & that is all I have to say because this sort of belongs in the PvP/Pk forum now?.
Assassins could be useful to steal things, or maybe the assassins can take skill-Points away from the people they take out?
-
Lineage II is a perfect example of how open pvp can ruin a game. High level players just roamed around towns, waiting for beginners. They would then kill the players. Not much fun heh?
On a open pvp system, gets pretty hard to meet people, form parties, etc... because the ones that don\'t pk get paranoid (they really do) and the ones that pk will get more and more psychotic. (Oh no, they are hunting me! They will see what happens when people challenge me). Something like that.
I prefer Androgos idea, seems better and functional.
-
Assassins would be useful if there were situations in which other players were \"automatically\" forced to accept duels - perhaps all guild leaders would be open to assassination, or if someone was being punished for a crime.
-
hmmm moving aside from the pk stuff cause we know its not going to be fully implemented throught out the whole game world. assassins are useful and act lets say more of a rogue with pickpocketing and backstabbing in combat and like in other games pickpocketing can be done on other players but also can be caught as such by guards. in combat the rogue which is basically an assassin has the ability to sneak up on its opponent and such can score a critical strike in a battle (non pvp type). the also may have better landing and jumping capabilites. they also can act as ranged with darts and throwing stars. i think this whole topic lost sight of the regular combat skills of an assassin as it also is martial arts type it acts with light swords and probably has a hi accuracy rating.
-
Okay thanks for all your replies, I haven\'t been on since I posted this thread... So on to Replies:
Androgos: I like this idea the best out of what I heard.
Mage of Darkness: I never forgot about the skills an \'assassin\' has... but since there are no classes, \"assassin\" as I used it refers simply to the profession of a contract killer. Unless you are contracted to murder npcs... this would be wasted.
Sesmi: I am well aware of the fact it is not a respawn, I just figured I\'d skip the death realm bit in my post, because the end result is a respawn.
WuRDuLaK: Excalimug? Is that who I tihnk it is? Howcome you use this name on these forums? To avoid confusion... I am Tyralus.
Zeraph: That would make an assassin a simple thief and would anger some people.
Arberar: you make a good point, but wouldn\'t the slayed PC see who killed them?
Shasok20: Haha, that\'s an amusing thought... does that mean you share my thoughts on uselessness?
The only feasible ideas are Androgos\' and Karakth\'s... bounties and guild wars... very limited if you ask me. At least it will enhance RP... Thanks to everyone who replied.
-
If assassins are to be used in the game then there has to be a way of hiding your identity as true assassins don\'t go about with their names floating about the place. If the enemy is to find out who you are he might go after YOU and worse your guild members, and then you might get kicked out of your guild for making enemies. And non-one wants that.
:) ;) :)
-
Shasok20: Haha, that\'s an amusing thought... does that mean you share my thoughts on uselessness?
No i don\'t think they are totally useless. Killing players is not the only thing assassins could be used for.
Killing monsters from behind using stealth for one,
doing quests possible only with assassination that\'s two.
-
PvP has already been decided that it will not be \"open\"...
And I really like Androgos\' Idea...you can only Assasin someone who has a bounty over their head. Perhaps people can even pay the city officials to put a bounty over someone else\'s head (bounty+paying city council= alot of money). That, plus Sashok\'s two reasons makes 3 reasons :]
