Title: Really rough idea dubbed, "League of Guilds."
Post by: Kuiper7986 on August 13, 2004, 05:48:43 am
Okay I gave this some thought. Although Planeshift has a lot of guilds I do believe that this game connects every guild in a way. Not by guild beliefs but the fact that every guild shares the same world of Yliakum with everyone.

The main idea...
This idea will be one of the first trials of player ran government in Planeshift (I believe, since the main site says there would be government.) I also believe that guilds will always have internal struggles but also external struggles with other guilds. Obviously one guild is going to believe they are right and the other is wrong, so with this \"League of Guilds,\" we can have an official system of fairness and checks and balances between guilds. So for ex: If guild A has a problem with guild B, then they both can take their dispute to the League of Guilds. Also it\'ll make every guild important in Planeshift rather than just being solitary not being known. Every guild will have its voice.

What makes up the league of guilds?
The league of guilds is made up or 1 or 2 representatives from every officially (meaning that everyone knows about or on thebbb.tk) known guild to Planeshift.

The role of this League:
The primary role will be to settle disputes by other guilds. Whether it\'d be trade routes or territorial matters, the league of guilds will have a 2/3 vote for whatever that they want passed to be passed.

Good or Bad idea?
On paper it looks good because its a system of fairness. Also it makes it interesting when politics come into issue. But until a unified system of guild relationship happens, honestly (even with pacts and alliances) every guild is still on their own when it comes down to it.

Comments or ideas, please post them, this is a good topic I think.

P.S: This is a rough idea still...

This has been discussed before, but I\'ll post my answer anyway.

Guilds can settle their own disputes. An organization between them is simply limiting. I certainly wouldn\'t participate. That is, if I was the leader of a guild.

While your right, guilds can settle their own disputes. But there\'s going to be a time where guilds need to have a central source of unification for communication.

We need to have a centralized system to prevent guilds from controlling to much while the other guilds can\'t control anything, especially the guilds that come out during the game.

For example: Lets makeup a guild named, \"The Orion Hunters.\" Okay the Orion Hunters have become so powerful they\'re starting a totalitarian movement. It isn\'t fair that that has happened. You know guilds are going to ban together to stop the Orion Hunters from growing even stronger. So why make a loose treaty with guilds you don\'t know when you could have had a strong partnership with the other guilds a long time ago?

The key again to the League of Guilds is to form the unification of guilds.

No, they have messaging programs. Guilds with disputes will not just ignore each other. They will dispute.

I don\'t see why. What would they be controlling anyway? And if they do, do you propose that some outside party steal from the rich to give to the poor?

Sounds like a dumb enough guild.

They must have worked hard to achieve that. Good job.

And what would it do until then? Conditional alliances can be formed, we don\'t need some organization that tries to make itself useful in the meantime by being annoying.

An abstract, impractical and innefective concept.

Well, I won\'t be too \"hard\" on you, and I\'ll only show you this:
What can i say ... I support the idea. And basically, yours is very close to that one. But I recommand you to read all those answers.

EDIT - Hmm, when I said \" B-I-T-C-H-Y \" it showed on the forums peanuty. That\'s odd ...

Yeah, Bism covers that. No point in making a lesser Bism 2.

I dunno, to me the BISM always seemed slightly more like an employment agency. I think Kuiper means something more like the UN.

Which I think is a good idea.

Zephyrus ...

 \"hmmm very interesting idea...
Just have to hope the council dont do as much futile bickering as the real UN ... \" -> your reply to the Planeshift Council thread.

\"I dunno, to me the BISM always seemed slightly more like an employment agency. I think Kuiper means something more like the UN .

I think you\'re a little obsessed by the United Nations :P Anyway, good to see others are interested to support this. And BISM sure looks like an employment agency, so stop advertising lynx. :)

un is no fun, it means a stable economy and fairness... HOW BORING

Don\'t take this offensive or anything... but it sounds like a bloody communism... that\'s saying guilds can\'t compete for higher status??!! Whether it be economic status, populace status, etc, etc.

And personally, I hate bloody communism!!

Besides where\'s the adventure in that!

Well, the Diplomats of the Bism, as anyone else, may take action themselves - peace and stability is generally in the public good.

pfff, the USA have proven that the UN is a waste of time, so this\'ll probably follow. The biggest and badest guild will be able to do what it wants.

This idea would really need some work before I subscribed my guild as a member...

Personally I have the same problem as FlippySeal. I see this as a bit of a socialist agency. To be quite honest I do not think this organization would be capable of anything outside the realm of influence of a run-of-the-mill alliance between guilds of similar alignments/beliefs. On top of that, this organization would almost certainly impose some element of conformity, which creates a barrier to entry for new/young/rebellious guilds, which in turn slightly inhibits creativity. Basically the more I examine this concept the more it seems to be good for very little other than stacking the odds in favor of whatever guilds are most like the \"majority\'s guild\" in PlaneShift. Don\'t we want to encourage role-playing by patting those on the back who come up with something off-the-wall or original? This only rewards anyone who has the same idea that has already been implemented myriads of times.

[edit: I do think it is funny that the older thread on this was called United Guilds and the newer the Leage of Guilds, given the history of the UN.]

Problem is, you\'re missing the concept.
Look, in real life, the world\'s goal is to achieve peace and happiness, and to eliminate poverty, hunger, disease and several etc.
In Planeshift, the goal is to have fun. When there\'s a Guild War, in the end it\'s not because two guilds don\'t get along, it\'s because those people want to have fun.
In other words:
A ficticious war in which no real people die and you get to kick some graphical ass anyways = fun.

That being stated, i see no point in preventing wars from happening. Of course, some \"big\" guilds could act as mediators in petty problems between \"small\" guilds, but i don\'t think that we need a formal organization for that.

But roleplay is also \'fun\', and if you let combat fun override roleplay fun then you are wandering into the realms of l337.

The roleplay potential of such a system is enormous. Whether it would be used or respected is a different matter.

the only way u would really  need a council of guilds..is when u have real problems..like big ass pk-ing going on..cause what other problems are there...that can only be fixed by a council?...if there is 1 biggest guild it sucks..and then i can only hope it will be COL

one other way u would need a council for..is when u can have like a castle..and it can be stormed all day every day.  then it can be annoying if one guild is getting attacked 100 times a day and can\'t do anything about it, only then u would need something to put a stop to it..allthough it seems cool to me to have sort of a council in a game. i dont think its really useful.

i cant really see the porblem with this? if ya dont wanna join the system then i suppose u should be able to take ur guild elsewere.

it can just be like a guild hall wehere everyone can discuss there differences and alliances and such instead of just doing it in the middle of knowhere.

it would just be a better place to sort things out. i dont see the probs with it

Annah suggested something along these lines along time ago, and I will say the same thing that I said back then: Over my dead body.
I will never be in a guild that is in a \'Federation\'. Alliance between a few guilds based on friendship? Yes. A council that  limits the fun of the game (imo) and the creation of new guilds? Never.
