Wish list / Backup Server
« on: July 17, 2005, 06:04:30 pm »
Why can\'t we set up a backup server now, and use it when the server\'s down?

What would the hosting requirements for such a server be? It could just mirror the databases from the real server - about 10gigs?

Then we could just boot it up when we got laanx down and keep playing.

A \"planeshift for slow/small devices\" would be a neat thing to get going - would just love to play this on something like my ipaq 3630.  This would also let people with less powerful or simply not compatible computers play the game.  Problem would be removing the opengl stuff though.

I\'ve finally managed to get ps running on my laptop - incidentally it has 512MB of ram, pentium 4 2.4Ghz and a 32MBgraphics card which does no opengl acceleration.

Consequently my framerate at normal settings is 0.5fps.
If I take the resolution down to 400*300 and colour depth down to 15bit I can get 2.2 fps, but that is still a bit too slow to use.

How could I reduce the lag some more - aiming for 15 fps here, at least 10 required.

I don\'t mind if I have to run in black and white if I can only make my speed target.  Anyone got any ideas - can lower colour depths be set up?

Cheers

Do you have a directory C;//program files/planeshift cb etc?

Otherwise you might not have really installed it.  Did you put it in the normal location?

Try raising the gamma of your monitor / artificial gamma of your video card a little bit.  Right click on the desktop, properties, settings, advanced and look around for somewhere where you can change the gamma.

After setting up your account you must log in from the client, not the webpage.  I guess you\'re on windows - go to the start menu, programs and look for planeshift.  Then start it and all will be clear.

For the linux people:

Did you do your exports (right).  Check them.  It looks as if the path to stuff not make installed is not right.

Compiling on linux is very easy, particularly if you follow the guide.

That said, use a distro with a decent package management system - ie yum/apt-get.  I would not like doing it on slackware.

If you are looking for the server, I don\'t think that there is a compiled release.

If you want to be safe use bittorrent.  It has plenty of inbuilt integrity checks, and should save having to redownload the whole file if something goes wrong.

Does the map appear to load?

If it does, and you get a chat window but no character, use /unstick to return to a valid point.  If that doesn\'t work, /spawn.  This moves you back to hydlaa.

If the map freezes when loading, perhaps try updating?

Not really sure on that one.

No- the brightness ingame should be constant, or all the annoying 1337spkers would make the night light as day.

If you need to change the brightness, do it on the video card.  Gamma can also help

You guys are running way hot - I hate hot hardware, and you can cook a pikelet at 47 degrees (I tried it on an old 166Mhz)

Personally I\'m steady at 29 degrees

I just use a 120mm case fan from an old server.

A) This post is in the wrong place.  It is an in game issue
B)  Turn up the gamma of your screen a bit.
C)  Don\'t go into the sewers at night, and wait until it is light to try to get out.  They are supposed to be dark

If there is lots of light coming at your pc, try turning the gamma up.  Do this in your video card configuration, sometimes its in the \"Advanced\" bit of \"Settings\" under windows.

Brightness doesn\'t seem to make much of a difference.

To elaborate on what chris said, add -auto to the end of the shortcut pointing to the updater, or start the updater from command line with something like

updater -auto
