Wish list / First person view (improvement suggestions)
« on: June 11, 2009, 07:13:34 am »
Hello there, I've been thinking about the way first person view is handled for the past few days, and I can't help but thinking there's a lot of room for improvement. I apologized if those have already been discussed, I did a bit of searching but couldn't find anything.

Mouselook could have less inertia. Right now, there's a lot of inertia in the mouselook : it take some time to build its speed, and then doesn't stop immediately when you stop moving your mouse. While this is perfectly fine in Third Person view as it makes the camera movements smoother, I don't think it's really useful in first person view. It is especially frustratig if you're used to play FPS games, in which the mouse si very responsive. Of course it doesn't need to be as responsive as Quake 3 or Unreal Tournament, since Planeshift is not about reflexes, but still, the way it is now can be frustrating at times.

No/Higher maximum speed. As I understand it, there is a limit to the speed at which you character can turn around, which limits the speed of the mouselook. That might be a technical limitation, but as far as gameplay/roleplay/realism is concerned I can't see why somebody couldn't turn around almost instantly. That would also be a lot less frustrating IMHO.

Active cursor while in Mouselook mode. It is very difficult to select an object with your mouse while using mouselook, and impossible to use the pop-up menus (with the icons like "look", "use" "pick" etc.). I really like using Mouselook all the time, but this means I have to switch back and forth each time I want interact with something.
I think the best way to handle it would be like in Lands Of Lore 3 (If I remember correctly), in wich your cursor would stay active in the center of the screen (although slightly translucent so as not to hinder visually), and you are still able to click things the way you usually do. Then when a menu pops up, you can temporarily control it to click on the item you want, and it gets back in the center of the screen as soon as you click.

Disable Mousemove. OK, I know you can remap it in the options (or remove it completely), but it might be nice to have Mousemove on the left click when in third person view, and not when in first person view, so that your character don't start running somewhere if you click next to the NPC you wanted to talk to ^^;

Lower Labels. The labels would definitely benefit from being displayed lower when in first person view. As it is now, you often have to look up in order to read a signpost (well as I write it I realize that actually makes sense LOL), or read someone's name, which can be annoying. I really wish the labels were always shown on screen, and not above the item/NPC.

Well that's it, thanx for reading ^^

Hi there, I'm posting here to complain about the updater, because I really think it should be improved : It's the first thing you use even before playing the game, so it should make a good impression. Besides, when you just downloaded the game you're usually eager to get into the game and don't want to waste time fixing an updater. I reinstalled the game the other day, and had some trouble with it... I knew planeshift was a good game and worth the trouble (I've been around since Atomic Blue) so I took the time to search a solution, but had it been my first experience with the game, I'm pretty sure I would have  thought "oh ok it's another crappy game that doesn't even work" and forgotten about it.

Now here's what I had to do :
-download the game
-install the game
-download the fix for the updater
-fix a .xml file manually
-launch the updater with a command line to add the "CheckIntegrity" option.
-update... and watch the ugly console output, not even knowing how much was left to download.

I should just have to DL the game, launch the installer and play !!! I think there used to be a graphical updater in Atomic Blue or Crystal Blue, which was much more user friendly (even if it doesn't affect the way it worked, it looked much better and gave a better first impression of the game). I think a typical installation should go like this : You install the game and run the client, which automatically checks your version (both the integrity and if it's up to date) if it's broken or outdated it should then tell you "you're client is out of date, updating now" and display a nice little window with a progress bar, then restart the client (still automatically) and connect you to the server.

thanx for reading !

Hi there, I haven't been around here in a while, and decided to reinstall planeshift to see what progress has been made... But I ran into a little problem.

So here's what I did :

I downloaded the 4.0.1 windows installer from the bittorrent link on this page.
Installed PS 4.0.1
Downloaded the updater patch and copy it over the one in my PS folder
Edited updaterinfo.xml to "<config active="true">" instead of "<config active="false">.
Ran the updater.
It updated the updater itself (apparently) and told me to press enter to exit.

I ran the updater again
It downloaded a bunch of files and apparently the update went smoothly
I ran PS client, entered my e-mail and password (don't know if they're still valid though), clicked OK
And I get this message "you are not running the correct version of planeshift, please run the updater".

If I run the updater again I get this log :
Code: [Select]
Checking for updates to the updater: No updates needed!
Checking for updates to all files: Updates Available!

Downloading update file..
md5sum of client zip does not match correct md5sum!!
Update finished!

I tried reinstalling the game and it's still not working...

Am I missing something ?

Thanx !

Forum and Website Discussions / "introduce yourself here" thread or forum
« on: January 25, 2004, 02:27:32 pm »
Recently I\'ve seen a lot of \"hi !\" or \'Hello I\'m new\" threads on the general board, it\'s nice that everyone introduce themselves and the general board seems the most appropriate one right now, but it would be cleaner if there was a sticky thread or a forum for that. Especially since CB will probably attract more people.

General Discussion / PS music composers...
« on: August 08, 2003, 12:35:53 pm »
I had lost Molecular Blue in a HDD crash, and I just reinstalled it recently... and I realized how much I like the music in PS and how I missed it lol.

So I was wondering, can I listen to some other works from PS music composers somewhere ?

edit : ah, now I can name them since I found there names in the ogg files, so kudos to Bruno, Mimi and Galdorlin  :-)

Newbie Help (Start Here) / lots of questions
« on: May 26, 2003, 12:17:23 pm »
hi there, I tried to search the forums and find answer to some of my questions, but some of them remain unanswered, can someone help with those ?

1) How far does the /say function work ? do you need to be in front of someone ? a few meters ? does it work across the plaza ?

2)is there a way to test lag (I mean ping, not FPS)?

3)about how many people connected at the same time should the game eventually support ?

4) Will graphics and speed be improved, or is the dev team mainly focused on gameplay ? Also will it instantly benefit from future releases of crystal space, or does it need much work to make it work with a new version of crystal space ? and will those new versions increase performance or only add new effects ?

5)How big is Yliakum supposed to be ? when you get into the caves in the current alpha, are these supposed to be level 1 caves, or do you reach lower levels ? Also is it possible that there are other towns (when you are at the top of the tower you can see pretty far, and there\'s a road going somewhere) or is it a small world with only 1 town ?

Hi everyone, I\'m new to Planeshift (I\'ve read the forums and the site a few months ago, but the game was so uncomplete I didn\'t bother to downlad it). I began this morning, and I must say I was impressed, the graphic engine is very nice, and despite the lack of functionnality, we could do some basic roleplay. Maybe BECAUSE of the lack of possibilities actually : you have time to roleplay when you\'re not busy making XP, slashing everything, and being PKed.

Now I also noticed that some players couldn\'t speak english well, which doesn\'t bother me (being French, I met a french guy and we talked in franch), but seems uncompatible with roleplay at first sight (\"hi, Do you speak French\" doesn\'t really fit the PS world...). But as PS needs more player, it would be cool to encourage people from all around he world to play. There also seem to be a need for support of other languages if you look at this thread . so I thought that languages should be part of the roleplay.
It wouldn\'t be that weird, as Yliakum population is made of people from the outside, which explains the variety of races, it would be logical that they came with different languages, and even if there is one official language (English) there would be several dialects (German, French, Spanish...). Now how to include that in roleplay ? first we would need to find more exotic names for the different languages, and maybe determine where they came from, and which races are most likely to speak which languages. Then we would need translators and interpreters, pretty much like in real life. One could make a living from being an interpreter, which would be a new job.
We can even imagine a few foreigners NPC, which would make it necessary for anyone (at least anyone who doesn\'t speak 4 different languages) to pay a translator to complete some quests.
Of course, 95% of the community would still be able to at least vaguely understand English, but it would be possible to roleplay. For exemple I\'m can speak english well enough to play, but I could as well pretend that I only speak french, and refuse to talk in english, or deal with someone who doesn\'t have a french interpreter.

The second idea is that you can\'t have a translator with you all the time, so you might want him to write a letter for someone in a particular language, which would also be a new job : scribe. Then things become interesting because you have to trust him, since you don\'t know what\'s really written in the letter, so you might very well have paid 200 trias for a letter which is not what you asked for.
More subtle, Imagine I suspect a scribe of being dishonest, and translating to french although he doesn\'t know a word of french (he could write some random french text taken on the net), and I ask him to write a letter for me... I think I could easily put an end to his business :-)

This letters thing can also be developped without using several languages. It would be fun (maybe even useful o_O) to be able to write a text, and save it to a scroll you could keep in your inventory, give to people, drop on the floor or even put on the walls of the city. It would also be possible to add a few things : for exemple we could use some seals, to prove that a certain person wrote the letter (that would be useful for guilds for exemple), and of course someone skilled enough would be able to make a fake seal. More, if we forget about my first language idea, there could be a special language for educated people (like Latin before), which only a few players would be able to read and write (it would require a high level, intelligence + a special training for exemple), Of course you would just type your text in english, and the reader would be able to read it or not (or only a few words ?) according to his skills, like if you have 45 points in language skill, you can right a letter so that only someone 44+ can read it, or use simpler vocabulary, syntax etc. so that anyone above 15 could read it.

Now I\'m not sure this would work, or be really useful, but I think it\'s still an interesting idea.

thanx for reading me, any comments or other ideas ?
