Yep, terrible idea...

Two was just for a simple example. Of course a spectrum, but no getting too complex. Something simple. I doubt if anything that was implemented would even resemble this idea eventually. But ... the issue is problematic all over. We don't want to segregate people into instances, but it would be nice to have some way to classify players... just with no penalties. A purely OOC way to see what someone's track record is, so to speak. I would also avoid a classifications like noob, or anything that could be derogatory. Something as objective as possible.

After four years of PS, MoM, and WoW I know that the RP versus everyone else situation is not limited to PS. Not in any way shape or form. On MoM and WoW it is about 1/3 (or less) RP, to 2/3 everybody else.

I mean RP to at least minimally mean that someone makes a name that is consistent with settings, and does attempt to act in character in game. I do not necessarily mean that they create highly-detailed backgrounds and RP productions. But plenty do outside of PS. Plenty.

The issues and frustrations that people express in all of these games with regards to those-who-immerse and those-who-do-not will never be resolved by trying to tell people what to do.

The free nature of Planeshift, and MoM for that matter, mean that there will always be new people trying the game. Probably mostly kids that are not going to take to things like RP focus just because it is stated that it is an RP game.

Perhaps there could be a visual colored indicator that appears with a player name in game. Something that would indicate creed, or whatever you might call it.

Lets say we have two creeds: RP and PL. One shows as a green dot near the name, the other as a purple dot near the name.

Everyone can vote on what creed their own character, or other characters belong in. Like a karma system, but with no penalties.

The only advantage is allowing the players to sort themselves and each other into visibly different groups for purposes of managing interactions in game.

There could be many creeds, but the number should be small to keep it manageable. Maybe Hardcore RP, Casual RP, PL, OOC, et cetera. Maybe it could be a line near the name, or some other indicator.

Believe it or not I think about this stuff at night before I go to bed. This is not a finished idea, and I am not arguing about it. Take it for what it is worth, and be excellent to one another.

General Discussion / Re: Descriptions as Roleplay Tools
« on: June 25, 2008, 10:19:58 am »
I remember once debating with myself for about a week before adding a tattoo to my description. I hadn't seen any tattoo-removal services around, so I figured it would have to be permanent. I added it, it is still there. Short and sweet on descriptions otherwise, no item-price lists *arg*, limited only to what is immediately and superficially visible on the character itself.

It could be an NPC that speaks l33t, he could be off in a corner by himself, the other NPCs could speak of him with pity, and you could have to use l33t to finish a simple, extra-credit quest with him. He would have to use some iteration of the "all your xxx belong to us". Best way to teach is by example, what not to be. It might be fun enough that people would remember it. Short and sweet, though.

Forum and Website Discussions / Re: Organizing help sources

One thing I finally noticed after looking at the Source Forge page about 1000 times is that it has screenshots from the game. That should have screenshots of the CVS build of the project on it. It might reduce the number of frothing-at-the-mouth open source advocates that come blazing in here with weapons drawn on a regular basis, who are horribly disappointed that the content is not open as well as the server/client. Just a suggestion for thought, as long as you are talking about websites.

Don't be sarcastic, please. Your first post contained no information at all. You run the updater and it is a black screen. What is a black screen? Your entire screen? A portion of the screen? A window that says updater, but is black and nothing is showing on it? Make sure you have the latest java virtual machine installed for your operating system. If you are using a Macintosh, don't run the updater. Otherwise, detail what you are saying with a screenshot at least.

Our old guild uses DeviantSMF. Should be pretty close to your administration interface. So in Administration...

Theme and Layout Settings
Theme Settings
Click name of theme
Modify the index template. (the main template)

The index template can be modified to include a number of images as links to specific forum destinations.
Make a new theme and work with that in SMF, change the theme setting for the forum after you are sure.

Hope that helps anyway...

Certain types of mineral deposits are found together. It might make sense for mining to usually return something, like rock or quartz or such.

A longtime PS guild mate I know recently went to Shaiya. They really like it. We were also in Minions of Mirth for a while, which has beautiful outdoors and weather, and the basic client is free. So if you just want to roleplay and not level, Mirth has some nice spots. Another guildmate I play Mirth with is running it under Wine as well. Thank you, Anumesa. And thanks to Cyl for the mention of the rootkit in that game.

From a managerial standpoint I would say no. If the guild leader set up permissions correctly and chose other active players to have guild administration rights, there is no reason that a guild cannot function with its leader often not online.

The only other system that I found that was as focused on RP was the NWN Nordock world, Richterm's Retreat. I talked to people about PS in there, and have done so on a few systems anytime I have a conversation with a player who is dissatisfied with the other players on the system, and who is being distracted from immersing in the game world. Eternal lands usually has a few at any given time, and is cross platorm and also free. Just to name a couple...

Please clarify: You have a Macintosh version of Guild Wars, or you were able to run it on a new Macintosh with Windows loaded?

If references to roleplay were changed to say acting it might be clearer what was wanted in PS. What you are really looking for is improvisational character actors that can assimilate background information and type well. One could argue that since there is no formal system of rules or personal referee in PS to run scenarios (for every character all the time), it is not really a roleplaying game. Horrors!

Participants determine the actions of their characters based on their characterization, and the actions succeed or fail according to a formal system of rules and guidelines. Within the rules, they may improvise freely; their choices shape the direction and outcome of the games.

Unlike other forms of interactive narrative, they can, in theory, be played with no tools and virtually no financial outlay: all that is necessary is that there be interaction between a player and a referee.

Labels like unimaginative, much like out of context and misquoted quotes, should be used with care. Both smack of desperation if overused.
