is there a guild website?  If not, I propose to host one on my computer.  I think it can hold up to most loads.  I host a blog now (http://linuxblogger.dyndns.org/weblog/).  Please let me know.  Also if anyone is interested in developing or good with content let me know too.  larrydag@sbcglobal.net

I believe the inherent problem with role-playing in Planeshift is a lack of understanding what Planeshift is all about.

For example, take the all time classic role-playing game D&D.  Now it is very easy to role-play that game.  Everyone knows what a knight is, or a magic-user, or a dragon, or a skeleton.  Using the basis of fuedal, medeival society is easy because everyone has a basic understanding or a frame of reference.

Now with Planeshift everyone is starting from nothing.  I created two characters so far and I know very little about them.  And one of them is human.  It says something to the affect that they have siblings and they are from this or that.  I have no frame of reference.  Now granted I probably need to understand Planeshift history better but as far as I can see the developers of Planeshift is not going out of the way explaining it.  One has to do some searching.

Here are some ideas for developers to get the role-playing going a little bit better:
1) Create movies, websites, or stories around the characters.  Not the towns, lands, or the cities but only the people that we are role-playing.  I think a movie would go a long way
2) Promote RP\'ing straight from the frontpage of the website.  The only thing I see on the frontpage is news about RL and downloads and links.
3) Promote up the guilds that support RP\'ing.

This is just my take.  I\'m curious if anyone else feels this way.

I seem to be getting the same character creation problems on my linux client as well similar to Xortran and peep.  But i don\'t get the mesh error.  I get an error saying \"The server sent an invalid model filename, please run the updater\".  Then when i press OK the window closes and boots me back to my shell terminal.

I also can\'t get the updater installed.  I\'ve replaced the .xml file and recompiled planeshift by using:
planeshift$ jam -a

result is no psupdater.  With no psupdater I can\'t go any further.

Edit:  I\'ve also noted that this error from my shell terminal seems to be common:

Couldn\'t create Resource \'charcreation\'
Segmentation Fault

Do elves have a language?  In LOTR they certainly do.

Yes, in game there is no problem at all.  I believe what the devel\'s are talking about is \"www.FindAnswersHereForPlaneshift.com\" (<---not a real site).

In game assistance IMO should be encouraged.  Also, I don\'t have a problem with guild websites offering quest solutions to their own guild members ONLY.

Poetry, Comedy, and other. / Question: How do you role play an elf?
« on: December 21, 2004, 03:34:49 pm »
I can role play humans (of course), orcs, trolls, devil things (just be evil) but I am not sure how to role play an elf?  What does one do?  How does an elf talk?  What are their propencities?  What do the like and don\'t like?

I\'ve been playing role playing games for a while but I usually don\'t tend to pick elves as a character because I don\'t know how to RP one.

What manual are you referring to?

Per Example:

\"The more people you have playing this game, the better the publicity. The better the publicity, the better donations will be and the more people will be willing to help develop this game.\"

I\'m not sure this is what the developers had in mind.  Since it is open source and the majority of the hardware is donated I don\'t think the developers care if there is publicity with the game.   I think what you said is a narrowed generalization for Planeshift.  The thing that draws me to Planeshift so much is the \"anti-establishment\" model the developers are using.  It goes against everything the multi-billion dollar gaming industry is spewing out now.  For a game like EQ your generalization makes sense but for Planeshift I think it is too narrowed.   If Planeshift draws people that\'s great but if it doesn\'t no harm done.  What will be interesting to see is if the online community will embrace the developer\'s wishes for the game and really enhance the gaming experience.  That was my original thought in this thread.

Yes I like this idea BUT who is to say that a new server will be available.  I am going under the assumption of the original developers game model and that is there is only one server as of now.

I\'m hoping Planeshift does not mimic EQ or similar games.  I would like to see a different experience.   For instance, if you were a human you could start off as a warrior and maybe turn into a ranger or even cleric.  Or be an elf-type and start as a wizard and become a necromancer or shaman.  I\'m just hoping for a different style of play experience.

As for me, I will probably start as a magic user of some type.  Then create a warrior type.

That does bring up an interesting question?  How is trading of items/wares going to be handled in Planeshift?

I was wondering if the installation of CB will be the same as it was for MB.  If not, then maybe acraig could offer a new installation guide for us linux users.  That would definitely help when CB client finally arrives.

How about a RP only chat channel?  I think that would solve a lot of problems.  Those that have connected to the RP chat channel can only see those that are talking in the channel.  You can switch back and forth as you like.  Does that sound like a good happy medium?
