Maybe this isn\'t related but I have seen Tefusang that walks right through a hillside to get to me when it used to walk over the hill.
This started happening right about when the hillsides/medows turned into the land of eternal night. lol

For me this setting is off by default.

I have been doing a lot of crashing without being able to save a dump file. I had to do a complete reinstall to get back to my default config files which seemed to get me out of the Plaza. Once out I could quit, restore my config files, start, and even go back to the plaza without crashing. I read a post saying it might have something to do with modifications to the shortcut bar.

After coming out of the plaza I was just entering the woods when I crashed and got this dump file.

http://upl.silentwhisper.net/uplfolders/upload7/PlaneShift_Neocuda_Sever_Version_Feb_21_2005_Addr0174568C.txt

Something odd about all this is that if I crash in the plaza, I come back as \'head growing out of the ground man\' and have to spawn to get out. If I crash out in the country side, I come back under the ground and fall to my death.

Hope some of this helps.

Edit: I went back to the new config files/install because it kept crashing randomly. After bringing the new install back I was playing for over and hour and didn\'t crash.

Ok. I\'ll be the official second then.

I log in fine and get the character selection screen.
I can select any character accept my dwarf because if I select it (meaning just click on it), the game bombs and asks to save a dump file. I answer yes and it comes back to tell me that it could not save a dump file. I look in planeshift directory to find empty dump file.

This started to happen before the characters were restored from backup. I figured it was just me and would eventually report it as I don\'t use this character much any more. Figured the characters data was corrupted or something. Never noticed that there were no dwarfs in the game any more though. Guess I just wasn\'t paying attention I guess. lol

Edit: Now that I\'m paying attention, I am seeing dwarfs in the game so it\'s not an \'all dwarfs\' issue.

Giving your system more RAM might help. I\'m fairly sure that the recomended RAM for this new version is 512 Meg.  At 256 Meg RAM you would get too much swap file activity.

I\'m using 1024 Meg RAM so I can use the \'load all maps\' feature and that is just bearly enough to do it.

Hope this helps. :)

Technical Help: IN GAME bugs (after loading world) / Mining bug
« on: February 13, 2005, 10:19:40 am »
I did a quick search and didn\'t come up with a match so I\'ll enter this bug report.

I was in the bottom level of the mine/dungen mining with one other that followed me. I am level 10 miner. Other was level 1 miner. Other person finished before me and left. Shouldn\'t it have been the other way around? I finished about a minute after the other which makes me think that we were mining at about the same level. I even had the best pick but didn\'t ask what other was using.

I tried outside the magic shop right after and got 4-5 hits in a row so maybe it\'s a locational bug? You folks can decide.

At any rate, it is annoying, because in order for me to re-update the game, I have to uninstall it, then run the updater, then hope that the problem is fixed... no luck so far, however, the game runs fine for me, and only the updater is the problem, thank you Lord. Alright now... back to playing my game....

I have run into a similar problem with the updater on Win98SE. There is an old fix for this that is published in these forums that worked for me.

You have to run the updater in a DOS window that is opened from the Planeshift folder. From the DOS prompt use the following command:

updater --auto

If you need further help, dig though the forums for more info on this.

Ok. I just tried the update again. After the end of the download and the message saying it will replace the files I click OK and nothing happens. I look inside the zip file to see that the date stamp has the 5th instead of the 4th on it. I unzip it and try it. It pops up with a Windows GPF error.

We\'re cheering for ya\'s on this one! We know you can do it! Gooooooo Team! :)

I managed to restore a working copy of the client from a system that hasn\'t been updated for a week. It will let me get all the way to the login screen. At that point I can see that the server is down and has been like that for at least the last 4 hours (17:30 EST now).

If there was someone on, that was quite some time ago now.

EDIT: according to the message time stamp, that was over 14 hours ago though. lol

My argument (and this game, I feel) stems from one word, imagination.

As an old RP player that comes from when that was all that it was, I feel that even though this game is a wonderful thing there are all too many without the imagination to fill in the gaps and insist that they be filled in for them.

I can very easily imagin that the guards did greet me at the gate and that they did tell me where the high points of the city are. I can also imagin that after a brutal brawl I was left for dead at the plaza and big lump on my head leaves me remembering nothing about where I am. I imagin that I would have to figure the whole place out all over again as well. :)

Yes. It would get way too crowded in and around the tavern. The plaza has lots of room for the crowd to spread out. :)

I completely disagree on moving the spawn point to the tavern. The first time I fired up this game (over a year ago) I very much enjoyed exploring the area and finding the tavern tucked away in a corner. This is part of what makes the adventure fun. Finding things.

Next thing, people are going to be asking for teleporters so they don\'t have to waste time going anywhere.

I remember how it was in the MB version. Almost constant greetings being fired out. Shouted discussions always rolling. Role playing in the Temple was almost always assured. And if it was too busy there, people would spill off into the tavern for more RP fun.

The difference experienced in the CB version is almost chilling. Rarely do people greet each other. No open air discussions occur any more. I remember only once, I stumbled into the tavern and there where some RPers  hanging out.

And about all that I hear in the air are the sounds of the leaches, sponges and PLs trying to get what ever they can out of you. And then there\'s all the noobs running around asking everyone how to play the game because they are too lazy to read the manual but will read it if you type it all out on screen for them. Not like they didn\'t exist in MB but when you increase the user base by at least ten times....

I think they should make it so hard to level that no one would want to. Then the RP would come back more.

Well, the game has been free for years now and they say it always will be. This is opensource with devs working for free all around the world. The whole idea is to develop a game without a Corporate agenda. This all stacks up to a better game in the long run.

I think you hit the nail on the head without realizing it. The operative word here is FREE! This game is hosted on a server for free. They are lucky to have it working for them. The chance of getting a second free server is slim to nil and would most likely be distant enough to be viable as well.
We\'re lucky to have anything for free in this world right now. :)

Oh. And I\'m sure there are many private test servers that the devs personally use. Still, mistakes are made. After all, they are human.
