Ah, I wouldn\'t underestimate the PlaneShift players, some of them have \"glitch\" exploration down to an artform, though most would not litter the locations, and are exploring just for the fun of it.

Well, It doesn\'t really resume the last update when you run it, it probably makes more sense to say that it checks that all files match the ones the server have to offer, and will only update files that are different from the ones on the server, since you have allready updated 20MB of files, it sees that those files match the versions of those the server offer, and so will not download these.

A usefull side-effect of this is that if you ever delete a file by mistake or a file is corrupted, the updater is likely to fetch that file again the next time it is run.

Yea, the teleport command was changed a while ago. The command is basicaly

/teleport

where is the one to be teleported and is where the is to be sent.

some commonly used variations:
/teleport me
teleports you to a player

/teleport here
teleports a player to your location

/teleport me map
teleports you to the map you named

/teleport me map
Teleports you to sector in the map on the location you spesify in , use /pos to find the coords of the location you are standing in. You will have to round the numbers to the nearest integer.

Hmmm... Well, This is a hoax that have been doing the rounds on the net for a while. The most obvious errors are that the device shown is not made to be connected to a laptop keyboard, this is meant to be connected between a normal PC keyboard and the keyboard port in a PC, normal PC keyboards have an internal microcontroller that handles the scanning of the keyboard and conversion of the information to a form suitable for transferring the data to a PC over a serial connection, as having a wire for each of the leads from the actual keyboard matrix to the PC would be rather inefficient. Laptop keyboards, how ever, will not use this approach, as the main board is already so close to the actual keyboard, a standard ribbon cable can be used, so in a laptop all the circuits involved in scanning the keyboard will be on the main board itself, so this device could not be used in the manner described. Also, this is a very unreliable way of doing this, it is far to easy for someone to remove or cripple the device, and it would not be able to log external PS2 or USB keyboards.

Now, when that is said, the device shown is a real keyboard logger, keyghost sells loggers for connection between a keyboard and a PC, or even keyboards with built in loggers. And though this device does not have network capability, there is no reason that it would not be possible to build such a function into a computer that has such a logging feature. The problem is that there would just be too much data to monitor if you were to monitor all computers, all the time, so this feature would probably only be accessed if there is some ongoing investigation. Not that they could not be abused...

See Drey, commenting on how good the GMs are doing does nothing if you are a GM yourself, it just opens up the door for people like zanzibar to repeat something they\'ve said plenty of times before that no one wants to hear again.

This is why it all belongs in one thread/area, I think it is safe to say the forum \"regulars\" are sick of it.

Indeed, People are probably tired of hearing how bad we GMs are. Taking flak is part of the job description for us, i guess. People tend to feel they are in the right, and minimize the transgressions they do when looking back themselves, so its easy even for people that did do something wrong to feel they were mistreated, and claim we abused our positions.

Many will probably only hear bad things about us, is it because we do not do our jobs well? Perhaps, we are still developing our skills, and there is a lot of issues to take in consideration when making a choice and often limited time to gather information, mistakes may happen, though we do try to learn from them, but it may also be that much of what we do is done well, after all, a well executed GM intervention should minimize disruptions to the game world, and so be invisible to most players.

But due to the way discussions of such topics have a tendency to become very heated, it has been decided that they should not be discussed at the forums or at the IRC channel. Any abuse by GMs should be discussed with the GMs or a Dev. Positive responses to our work, how ever appreciated, should also be avoided in the forums and IRC channel too.

Soo, please avoid threads about the deeds of the GM team, both good and bad.

The way I see it is that the form one of the gods take is some reflection of how they feel about themselves and their personalities, its not a choice. Laanx may have been marred in that incident on a spiritual level, and so the avatar ey gets when manifesting emself suffered in reflection of this. The part of ey denying eirs femininity does not have to mean a conscious choice, just like people mostly do not choose how they feel about themselves. Ey suffers from low self-esteem and doesnt let people see em without being completely covered, who know how much of what ever ugliness Laanx have now is there because ey became so bitter, Perhaps if ey could make up with Talad and get some friends and perhaps some counseling, ey might recover at least a little... Sadly, it will probably not happen, gods are not usually very good patients, and the therapist will probably not survive the session...

Of course, this is only an interpretation of the story.

As Drey said, the sound system tends to cause crashes sometimes. Switching it of helps many. But before doing that you could experiment a bit with the settings, try a different sound driver from the pssetup, and try to switch off and on the different classes of sound in game to find if there is a usable compromise.

There is player vs. player fighting in PlaneShift, in the form of duels. If a player wants to duel another player, they have to /challenge them and the other player have to accept the challenge before the duel can start. The client allows you to set one of three ways to handle challenges; you may automatically decline, automatically accept or have a request pop up when you are challenged. NPC monsters/bad guys can be fought without challenging, but NPCs like merchants, citizens and trainers can not be attacked.

Most new players start out by hunting rats, the Hydlaa sewers is the common place to hunt for them. They can be killed by most players without weapons, and the hides and eyes from them(/loot your kill) can be sold to merchants to earn some tria(money).

If you need help in game(for example with finding the sewers), you can either ask a player politely for help or use the help channel in the chat box. Please avoid using /shout to ask for help and avoid begging for tria or items, it is considered rude and disruptive for the other players. Role-playing is encouraged, so thinking a little on the story of your character, and how they act would be a good idea. You should familiarize yourself with the Ingame Rules of Conduct, especially the naming policy, if you are going to create a new character. Bad names are changed sooner or later, and though GMs may ask the player for suggestions, GMs do not always have the time or possibility to talk to you about it, and you may end up with a randomized name, so its best to choose a good name from the start.

I hope you find these advice helpful and Welcome to PlaneShift, may you have a pleasant time here.

As Lemontea said, the information pertaining to your character(s) is stored on the server. This means that there is no local \"save file\" for your character. Client settings are stored locally on your computer though, so things like your shortcut buttons and key mappings will have to be copied or recreated if you wish to have them on another client installation.

Open source means that the source code of the game is available for anyone to use(within the limit of the license model used).

The artwork like maps, textures, music and so on is under a more restrictive license to prevent people from using it directly or to create derivative artwork of it. If you did use it, Atomic Blue might have grounds to hold  you in violation of the license agreement and take legal action against you.

What you could do, is to make your own artwork, but use the PS code in your own games.

So, there is no way for normal players to change the stats or skills of their characters beyond training it in game. There may of course be some bug that can be exploited to give a player unfair advantages, but it would not be acceptable, so the Devs(Developers, the people making the game) and GMs(Game Masters, the in game moderators of the game) do what they can to stop this. Please do report bugs and exploits, so that they can be handled with. Also, if you suspect a player is cheating, they are abusive, or in violation of the Ingame Rules of Conduct, you may report this to a GM or submit a petition about it.

Actually, the client must connect to the server before you can create your character, since you create your character on the first free of the four slots for characters your account holds. Accounts and the characters are stored on the server side, so the client don\'t know if you have any free slots on a particular account without being connected. So, I am afraid you will have to wait until the server is up again before you can make your character.

As for  the second question, I expect it will be removed after the server is up again.

I prefer the 3 person view myself, I know some people find it unrealistic, but personally I find I can much better immerse myself in the world while in this view. I find the 1st person view to be distractingly limiting to my situational awareness. I think the problem is the limited field of view that a computer screen can show and the lack of other sensory feedback that in the real world would give me a feeling for what\'s around me...

Actually, the avatars do not move that slow, though quite a few people seem to expect that you run by default, and walk when holding shift, not the other way around. I seem to walk more than run these days though, so I like the way the controls work.

The windows/buttons can be distracting (and perhaps a bit overwhelming if you are new) but they can be hidden, and, at least in my experience, one gets used to the interface after a while.

You attack slower with swords than with only your fists, how much slower depends on the mass and size of the weapon. Bigger weapons tend to do more damage if you can use them successfully though.

Swords work fine, but without skill in the art of using it, you will do little damage, you have to train sword skill to get good damage with the swords.

Axes seems a little faster than swords, but also seems to do less damage(but I haven\'t used axes in a while so I am not sure if this still apply)

If it was me you responded to:

Transmutation is the art of changing one element into another, but my point was that the attempts to make valuable metals out of less valuable elements was only part of what alchemists was trying to do, and they were never really successful in that either, it would take many centuries before someone succsessfuly transmuted an element, and it is not really something one can do to earn money, its just to expensive in relation to the amount of valuable elements you can make.

They did however lay some foundation for what is now called chemistry. It is perfectly within the scope of an alchemist to make potions. Herbalists would be able to make potions too, but they would be made differently, for example by boiling the plant in water.

Yes, Alchemists did attempt transmutation of metals into gold, but they also worked on life prolonging, the search for ways to heal diseases(espesially they hoped to make a universal cure), and to improve the mind. Pure alchemy tends to involve the use of compounds that is of a non-biological type(though they may be of organic origin, like alcohols and coal).

So, Alchemy does not need to involve the search a way to transmute metals, any kind of study of the ways different compounds and chemicals react and how they may be used would go under alchemy.

By the way, the mining levels too has been reworked, you are now more likely to fail at mining, before you could be almost certain to get something with a level og two and a good pick.
