Technical Help: Problems BEFORE entering the game / Windows 98
« on: March 13, 2005, 06:35:54 pm »
The theoretical limit (what it was made for) is 512 mb for Windows 98, however there are work arounds if you install more than that to keep windows from crashing.  So in practice you can easily have 512mb with win 98 and over 512mb if you don\'t mind editing some files manually.

Oh and the above poster is right, try to keep the same speed ram in your system ( as a bonus you can try to match no only the bandwith but also CAS latencies).   Examples are Cas2 Cas2.5 and Cas3.    All things being equal, use the fastest memory your MB will support with the lowest CAS latency.

Lastly newer memory (PC100 on up) was designed to be backwards compatible.  So if you toss PC2700 memory in a mb that can use pc2100 at best, the PC2700 will work at the lower speed.

Forgot to add!  Some motherboards will interlace memory.  This only works if you\'re using identical memroy and can definetly provide a performance boost.   Also there is an issue about the most memory you can effectively cache and this will vary according to your L2 (or L3) cache.  Modern systems usually can cache as much RAM as your mobo can handle, however you still may want to check with your motherboard manufacturer to see if you are affected by this.  (One such example is the FIC 503+, It can hold 512mb, but can effectively cache 256mb - so the upper ram doesn\'t perform as well.  Note that this is the rare exception to the rule).

Technical Help: IN GAME bugs (after loading world) / Worthy Cause

Hey, you should find Randalp online (he\'s the guy that got 4,252 progression points from killing a rogue) and give him a chunk.  At an average of 42 tria to train each skill level that comes to 178,584 tria he\'ll need to train them all.  Let\'s see how godlike we can make him in the game.  Also it\'ll be a way of finding possible bugs with insane advancement :)

Development Deliberation / Possible workaround

If you\'re running XP, and your mouse is abysmally slow in game try this:

Go to:
control panel > Mouse > Motion

Uncheck the box maked \"disable acceleration in games\".  See  if that works, post here if you were succesfull or not (or if you don\'t have that option).  I use logitech marble trackballs on all my PC\'s so I\'m unsure if that option is only there because of them.

Also let me know if that causes you more issues.

I had the same issue, abysmally slow mouse and adjusting the sensitivity in game from 25 to 100 did nothing (kept reverting to 25).  What worked for me was to enable mouse acceleration in games under the windows control panel.  I\'m not sure if this is exclusive to Logitech mice (or XP), however it\'s worth a look.

Go under the control panel> mouse> motion (tab) and uncheck the box that says disable acceleration in games.  Keep tabs on how this affects the game, I\'m not 100% if there are negative repercussions so far.

Hope this helps!

I also noted another error casued by the mousewheel.  When in game if I accidentally touch it, my mouse cursor gets stuck at the middle of the screen.  I can move it left and right, but when I move it up and down it immediately goes back to the middle (vertically).

On a side note,  I had previously gone under:

control panel > Mouse > Motion

I unchecked the box maked \"disable acceleration in games.  I initially had it checked and this caused my cursor to be slow (like others were reporting on the thread). By checking it my cursor was very responsive and working great.   I\'m using a logitech mouse under XP so I\'m unsure if this option is available to all.

I\'ll try undoing this and disabling extra functions to see if this fixes the issue.

Are you still using the same config file?  Like for your window settings (position and such?) .   Someone had suggesting installing the game in a different directory and trying that.  I know when you reinstall everything gets replaced - except some of your ingame settings (keyboard shorcuts and such)  could one of those be causing trouble with your char?  Installing in a new directory (or wiping your directory and re-installing) will give you fresh config files all around.

I\'ve noted when It crashes on me on load, I get the \"PSClient.exe has encountered a problem and needs to be shut down\" message.   Every single time It happens it\'s at the \"Requesting/Loading Word\" and the really wierd thing is that when it does, on the top left it displays a random characters name upside down and in green text/blue background (or vice versa - not sure).   I change nothing, but keep on trying to get in and when I do everything else runs fine!   Seem to have better luck around lesser busy times.   So could it be two people joining the game at the same time?  like it was suggested?

I\'m running it on XP pro on an E-machines Laptop:
AMD Athlon XP 2100+
512 MB of Ram -32MB Shared Ram
Wireless networking - connected to cable
On board ATi Radeon 320m video 32 MB Shared RAM
Cut down all extra processes and minimized XP visual effects to maximize available ram.
Direct X Sound renderer - (Sofware sound is choppy and OpenAL crashes the game on startup).

BTW where is the best place to get the OpenAL dll?  I tried the one from OpenAL.org and creative with no luck.

Technical Help: IN GAME bugs (after loading world) / Possible cause
« on: December 30, 2004, 10:05:09 pm »
I was experiencing the same issue, game would quit at the \"loading world\" screen.  I tried reinstalling the game only to get intermittent success.  (I even kept a backup copy of the whole freshly installed and updated game directory since I was convinced that a file was somehow getting corrupted after I ran the game once).  After copying my pristine files from my backup directory to the actual game directory several times and running the game to no avail I realized that something else must be the cause.

Then It  ocurred to me  to check my connection to the server.   With a:    ping -n 100 planeshift.fragnetics.com
I found out I was geting 11% packet loss!   after resetting my internet connection and waiting for the packet loss to go down to 4% (best I could get) I was having much better luck logging in.  I actually played the game for 2-3 hours with no problems (except for the ocassional pause - probably another lost packet)!

So I wonder if a great deal of this could be peoples connection to the server,  the game may be less tolerant of packetloss when logging in and zoning...

Oh and defragging the HDD, trimming down my startup items (including shutting off my AV before starting the game), and turning down the windows visual effects helped a ton as far as speed went.   Of course now my windows XP looks like 2000 but Planeshift runs great.  Hope this helps some folks.
