If you do it by the numbers you regression test your bug fixes. A bug fix is expensive to create and costs the users time to apply to their systems. I\'ve found the best way is regular scheduled bug fixes (unless you have a show stopper you must get out). Make them often enough to be responsive, but not so often as to be bothersome.

Sure, there\'s more overhead due to n-plicate bug reports, but OTOH, due to the dump system, they can be sorted out in relatively short time AFAICS. Furthermore, many of the bugs don\'t appear in a closed testing due to the limited variety of systems and configurations in the closed group.


Keeping people from giving up is probably worth it. I sometimes
envy the guys doing XBox games. They don\'t have to worry about
getting workable code with N thousand different hardware
variations!

It is a tough call. It seemed to me that more time was being
spent on debugging the release than would have been spent
doing it internally. An information collection option about
the environment a user has trouble under would be very
useful. If you don\'t have the same environment you won\'t
be able to reproduce the bugs.

BTW,
Do you know if there\'s a need for 3d models and texturing?
If the project is organized and someone will take responsibilty
for managing it I might be able to contribute. In that past I\'ve
tried to contribute to online projects but I had to either
fight with others to be allowed to help, or spend 6 months
figuring out what needed done myself first. Neither option
is terribly attractive for a project where I will not be paid or
get any recognition. I would gain some personal satisfaction
for helping, but I won\'t bleed to be allowed to do it.

Somehow it ate itself. In one of the previous sessions I hit the quit
button and it refused to shutdown. I used the task manager
to kill the application. Now none of the applications work.
The setup program brings up an dos application window which
pauses for several minutes, then changes the window title, and
finally locks up the machine. The game application does the same.
I powered the machine off and restarted. No change.

If I remember correctly from the crystal space programming I did you can get it not to bring up a dos window by changing a few settings on
the compiler. The settings were listed in the CS forums.

I\'ve got a lot of other things that I need to do today so I\'ve uninstalled Plane Shift. Thanks for taking the time to help.

I think the public beta test was a bad idea. You\'re wasting your time on bug reports and creating a bad impression of the game by releasing it before it was ready. A good remote debugging suite (at minimum something like dxdiag, or better yet, Mozilla\'s suite) and an alpha test with a limited group of users would have been better and less frustrating.

Sorry, Doesn\'t work either.

I did search the forums before posting but either I picked the wrong search terms or the search doesn\'t work.

I noted the web page for the forums had broken links to the pictures.

These things all add up to give a really bad first impression of plane shift. If trivial stuff doesn\'t work reliably this really should be labeled an alpha test version.

Sorry to be so negative but the spirit of testing is to iron out the bugs and you can\'t fix them unless someone points them out.

I can\'t login because I can\'t enter the \'@\' symbol in my email
address. I tried to cut and paste the address but text paste does
not work in the input field. I tried the very old trick of holding
down the alt key and entering the numeric code for the key but
that does not work either.

I also note that the ability to select text and replace it by typing does not work. This isn\'t a bug but is convenient.
