Technical Help: Problems BEFORE entering the game / Improving performance

Any tips that I might have missed in my forum search that will help with improving performance? The ones I\'ve found are:
Turn off fading boxes
Lower the resolution
Quit all other apps
And that\'s about it. Anything else?
