I used both freeze and summon missile so I couldn\'t narrow it down to any one cast... however, it did only happen after I started casting spells.. This may be the problem.

When a rat has been killed (0%) life, it appears as standing still. However, Exp received is ridiculous amount (2000 +) such that progression points earned is huge. Reproduction of this bug is dependant upon the rat spawning and has been reproduced only through observation after a rat has been killed. Although I don\'t mind all the exp 
it is nonetheless a bug.
