The Hydlaa Plaza / Re: the prices for vista
« on: September 05, 2006, 12:33:42 pm »
A random surfer found by coinsidence the prizes on the new windoez vista on the canadian microsofts hp

vista home = 275.777 usd
vista ultima = 448.227 usd

quite outrageous, imagine that a couple have to upgrade os, and only knows about windoez, maybe they only need 10% of what is on vista... that would mean they are paying for something they don't need, which would be a robbery.
This is not the entire cost, I'm afraid. All prices - regardless of version - also include exactly one soul.

The problem as I understand it isn't as much that people have different opinions on how to treat the death realm, or a problem with realism (close to the way it is in the real world, that is) as is the fact that it creates a dull world where nothing ever changes and everything is pointless. There is no intruige and nothing ever has a lasting effect. Imagine, if you will, the following situation:

<Insert world domination plotter here>: The last resistance has finally been crushed! Yliakum is ours to rule! Order and power shall flourish and... *is interrupted by do-gooder arriving at the scene*
<Insert do-gooder here>: Your vile schemes shall not come to fruition! Taste my steel, evildoer!
<Insert world domination plotter here>: By the gods, this is not possible! I slew you with my own blade just two hours ago! How can you have returned?
<Insert do-gooder here>: Are you kidding me? With the size of the death realm it's a wonder it took two hours. Now prepare to be vanquished!
<Insert world domination plotter here>: But how am I supposed to achieve control of the stalacite if not even the foes I slay stay dead? How am I supposed to enslave an immortal people?
<Insert do-gooder here>: Hmmmm... I quess you can't. Anyway, have at thee!
<Insert world domination plotter here>: You know what? Screw this world domination plot. I'll go do something actually possible to achieve instead.
<Insert do-gooder here>: Like what?
<Insert former world domination plotter here>: Hmmmm... Assassinating the ochtarch and putting in his place a puppet that will follow my every whim? Oh, right, immortality... Well, I quess I'll stand over there breathing for a while then.
<Insert do-gooder here>: Aww, but then who am I supposed to twarth and vanquish?
<Insert former world domination plotter here>: Well, you could go poke the group of mindless animals over there with your sword. Not that it will actually achieve any meaningful difference, but at least they stay dead.

A collection of randomness and awesomeness, and Great Uncyclopedia isn\'t mentioned? Shame on you! You have all been brainwashed by foul, doubleplusungood Fnord wikipedian lies and misinformations! In fact, you are all part of the great conspiracy!
The FSM have mercy upon your soul!
I would also like to draw your attention to The supreme Hackers that exist.

Niavard is a 21.
The test mainly punishes uber or copied cliche characters, Niavard happens to be both fairly useless and a selfish bastard who is only loyal to himself, there are few such characters.
I\'m curious as to see how far into negative UTM\'s Arnigus goes.

Personally I think that if permament enchantments that aren\'t incredibly weak are to be added, it should require a large sacrifice from the creator of the enchantment to make sure enchanted weapons stay rare. Like transfering (thus losing) a large portion of the knowledge in the way the enchanter enchanted the item to the item, or having your body become weakened by all the energy flowing throught it (losing Endurance and strenght) of course, there should also be a posibility of backfiring while enchanting which would make you lose the power you invested into it for nothing.
Enchanting items permamently should permamently weaken the enchanter, and the power sacrificed should be proportional to the power of the enchanted item.

Approach a GM to stop roleplay? even if it is a stupid and illogical roleplay, I hope PlaneShift never comes to that.
Personally, I think I would point out the apparent flaws in ooc surronded by brackets.

@Nikodemus: My goal was not to make combat hard which is all your idea does (it is still a resource), but to make it a problem rather than the resource right now...

Also, I did not suggest removing a hp based system, just balancing it so that a few hits usually empty ones hp, thus making the system depend much more than luck.

@Draklar: I suppose that you know alot more than me about medieval Combat then, so I suppose this system is unrealistic if it is impossible to beat a superior regardless how many times you try... /me wanders off to think of another way to discourage combat.

*raises a white flag*

Where did you get this from? I see no reason why experienced fighters always should defeat less experienced warriors, no matter the amount of luck involved, surely even experienced warriors can make a mistake or unexperienced warriors get a lucky hit, training should help one\'s probabilities of succes, never make sure one always win.

Source, please?

Wish list / Removal of focus on combat.

It has always seemed odd, unrealistic stupid and un-rpish to me that in many games enemies were a resource of power rather than a problem, I believe this can be avoided by doing three simple things.

First and most obvious is a high punishment for dying, if the Death Realm is painful enough and takes enough time to get out of (preferably RL days), it might be enough.

Second is Making combat give you very little in terms money when compared to crafting, and very little of combat experience when compared to sparring or training (with the time the deaths will take taken into acount).

Third, and most important is making it combat extremly risky, this is best done by making even the most resilient of warriors go down after three, at most four hits (this should probably be reserved for Krans and Ynwns), and making normal people go down after one or two, and make the chance to hit slim, this way, with a little bit of bad luck an experienced swordsman can be brought down by an untrained newcomer (this should also discourage constant challengeing of the newcomers, since even the most experienced of warriors should have a, say 20% chance of losing instead of the 0.0000001% chance most games have between even short intervals of experience).
But won\'t this make ranged combat overpowered? make it so that most objects launched by various bows and crossbows often miss and even more often can be absorbed by even light armors, and make it so that spells usually either miss, backfire or are resisted.

My third point in short: have combat consist of mostly dodging/absorbing blows with your armor/parrying/resisting spells/missing, but make it so that a few hits can take down even very resilient krans or ynwns, making combat depend a Great bit on luck thus making it so that no one can fight safely even against a much weaker opponent.

If we do all this, combat will be so risky and unrewarding that people will try to avoid it most of the time, making the stalacite much more realistic and in my opinion rp friendly.

I am aware that I do not know the leader (which is why I said \"I suspect\"), but if a guild has no existance on the forums, recruits people who has no idea about the ps setting at all and has a name contradicting the setting, it  is my experience that that guild tends to be a stupid, pointless, massrecruiting, OOC guild.

I feel that this is a good time to point out that there is, in fact, no moon seen from Yliakum, as it is underground, unless a thoughtthrought backstory (somehow) is behind this, the guild contradicts the PS settings, thought I suspect it is just another stupid, pointless, mass-recruiting OOC guild (probably with a leader who doesn\'t have a clue about the PS setting).

first, don\'t use the \"u\" as a word, it isn\'t...

To channel the energies of the azure sun one needs glyphs, these can be found in a shop run by a man by the name Levrus outside of hydlaa, they then need to be purified - tuned after your own magical energies (known as dweomer) (you do this by clicking the spell book icon or tapping B, then going to the combine glyphs menu), after purifying the glyphs, you can combine them to create the spells, thought many spells need only a single glyph, once you\'ve found a spell, record it in your spellbook. (you do this from your combine glyph menu) and then you can acces it from your spell book.
Be aware that you will need either one rank in a spells respective way or full theoretical knowledge in that way to cast the spell.

Remember, PlaneShift is not about powerleveling and using internet slang, it is about roleplaying...

Allowing people to acquire in game information throught oocish means goes against the PS rules.

Won\'t this provide the kind of guide for powerlevelers (like which glyphs to combine, which way is best to kill a certain monster, etc) with info you don\'t want the players to find in an oocish way?
