Complaint Department / Re: misotheism from a roleplaying perspective
« on: October 15, 2011, 10:01:52 am »
Agnosticism ... is the belief there is a higher power/being, but it is unknown for sure what that is.

Only a very Deist position of Agnosticism could be kept in Yliakum. Traditionally Agnostics don't believe there is definitely a higher power, but believe it is impossible to know. In Yliakum, we do know that 'gods' exist, however, we can be unsure as to the extent of their actual power, and believe we cannot understand them at all.

Of course, Xirius has never actually seen any of the four gods, nor witnessed their work that could not have been done by mortals...

I think you might be able to balance things out by making it (or having in addition) a two-on-two contest. That way someone can choose a partner that complements their magical strengths and weaknesses. It also makes things a bit more strategic- i.e. do you focus your attacks on just one person leaving the other unscathed to attack you back, or both?

Also, perhaps having a judging panel to do an additional score based on RP flair and style while casting spells? That way the person great at RP but not as much with magic can still win something against someone terrible at RP but who has power-levelled themselves.

Anyway, sounds like a good idea!  \\o//

There have been rumours that Ad Libertatem has disbanded! Nothing could be further from the truth.

Following the arrest and incarceration (without trial!) of some of our members for minor infractions, AD LIBERTATEM is now a secret organisation.

Please read the edited first post for more information, and keep checking back for the next chapters of Xirius' story.

I've got another to add (I'm surprised it hasn't been included already since it is referenced in quests):

Duplicate Book (Azure)
Realm 7
Holding a written book/map in one hand and a blank book/map in the other, makes the blank into a duplicate (including abilities it has- i.e. to copy book of blades etc.). Some rare texts (rare smelting for instance) could have a copy-protection enchantment that keeps this from working.

Several days pass, and you find yourself needing to fill an order for several crystals of various types, and four silver ingots. You know of a place in the wilderness to mine silver, but seeing as you need the crystals, you decide to venture into the dungeon caves deep below Hydlaa.

Deep in the caves, near the silver mine, you see a young and petulant rogue who introduces himself as Zak. Among his meagre possessions, you notice a crumpled-up bit of parchment with blue lettering very similar to the previous stories you've been reading. Noticing your interest, Zak picks up the crumpled message and throws it at you, laughing when he hits you square between the eyes.

Something is Rotten in the Dome... Part IV

“Will the accused Klyros identify his name for the court!?!” bellowed the bailiff standing from the platform above.

The Klyros gazed humbly up at the Xacha, his face pale from fear and malnourishment. After he had been taken from his cell, he was hurriedly washed and given a slightly tattered and faded black robe to wear- the neckline of which he noticed was stained with blood from past executions. With shackled hands and feet the accused had been brought immediately into the courtroom of East Hydlaa and had been pushed down hard onto his knees by the guard lieutenant Rabartus Livrandar.

“Xirius… sir. Xirius Dolaktisht.” He answered meekly.

The Xacha bailiff was dressed in immaculate red garments and bore the golden sash of legal authority. Next to him was sat Iragdun Salikarios, the Ylian Octarch of the Dome level, dressed in violet robes, golden armour plate, and many medallions. Looking at him, Xirius thought his magnanimous appearance was almost preposterous. He looked down at the Klyros and the rest of the courtroom with a cold indifference. Usually criminal courtroom proceedings would be beneath his high office, but the accusation of being an Onyx Dagger spy was synonymous with treason and thus required his presence.

“Xirius Dolaktisht!” the bailiff began again in a haughty voice- “you are here accused of thievery, espionage against the Octarchy, and communion with the illegal criminal association that call themselves the ‘Onyx Daggers.’ These highly grievous acts are tantamount to high treason.”

Xirius’ was not surprised at these accusations; they were the very ones the two ladies had devised when he was innocently caught many weeks prior. He readied himself to shout (or say, as he probably did not have the strength to shout) ‘not guilty’ at the next of the bailiff’s formulaic legal statements.

The Xacha continued- “we have already heard testimony from her grace the lady Molveni, Vigesimi of the Dome, and from her grace the lady Rikania, also Vigesimi of the Dome…”

Of course! Xirius remembered seeing both of them give an address at the annual Azhord harvest festival in Hydlaa last cycle. He couldn’t remember exactly what it was about, but seemed to recall it was something to do with the eclipse and the Diaboli. It was all very scientific, but he remembered it was well-attended by many prominent mages and government officials. But… how would the court know about Molveni and Rikania? Xirius became very pensive and wondered exactly what was going on.

The Xacha bailiff continued the usual legal diatribe- “Although the customary penalty for treason is to be cast into the great crystal, there are worries about its instability given the upcoming eclipse. Therefore, the penalty will be permanent exile to the halls of the damned in the so-called ‘Death Realm.’” The Klyros heard loud murmuring from the indeterminately-numbered audience behind him.

“Xirius!” the bailiff shouted, pointing at him directly. “How do y…”

“Vaarkanon…” Iragdun addressed the Xacha mid-speech, sounding quite jaded. “I do not believe it will be necessary to have a full trial here. I have already heard the testimony of two of my most trusted advisors and I absolutely do not wish to hear the words of this Klyros bandit.”

“But your Excellency, what of the prop…” The bailiff questioned, but was again cut-off.

“My dear bailiff” Iragdun continued- “Jefecra himself personally found the diadems of office of both Molveni and Rikania in the sack of this rogue, an onyx ring and blade that confirms he is a member of that wretched gang, along with a…” Iragdun chuckled- “a very poorly forged writ of passage to the winch. This evidence is in addition to the testimony from both my trusted Vigesimi that they were robbed on the Bronze Doors road. I desire that no further time be wasted on this...” his eyes blazing with fury, Iragdun looked directly at the Klyros, who was nearly catatonic at these words. “… This ‘Xirius.’”

“As you wish.” The Xacha conceded, bowing his head. He believed as much as Iragdun that the Klyros was guilty. The whispers of the crowd grew rather loud as this unusual but not unheard-of turn of events. “Xirius, as is the ruling of his Excellency, the wise Octarch Salikarios of the Dome, you are to be executed and your body burned at a pyre. Magic from Dark way masters will guide your exiled spirit to the Halls of the Damned. There you wi…” Vaarkanon was again interrupted.

“Wait!” A female voice shouted from the back of the courtroom. “This is entirely improper and unethical! The Directives of Jurisprudence clearly state that if there is any contrary or incoherent evidence, a trial cannot be dismissed by the Octarch.”

“Who are you!” Iragdun demanded, annoyed and nonplussed. “Speak!”

“Sir… your Excellency.” The voice continued- “I’m merely a concerned citzen, who knows the law.”

“I’m afraid that she IS correct Excellency” the Xacha bailiff added.

The Octarch had clearly not foreseen this sort of setback, and Iragdun grumbled various incoherent curses, before recomposing himself though still sounding irritated. “Fine… And what evidence can you present that is supposedly questionable?”

The female voice shouted gleefully from the back, much to the Klyros’ relief- “Xirius was not on the Bronze Doors road at the time of this supposed robbery, and neither were Molveni and Rikania, and I can prove it!”

General Discussion / Re: Magic - spells proposals
« on: August 30, 2011, 01:15:53 pm »
I've got a couple suggestions for spells:

Far Sight (maybe Azure and Crystal inter-way?)
Realm 3
Gives the caster the ability to target and interact with NPCs and objects much farther away than usual.

Dark Appeasement (Dark way)
Realm 3
Counteracts Dakkru's curse (only counteracts for the length of time the spell is cast- i.e. at realm 3, lasts roughly 5 minutes and by realm 7 lasts the entire length of the curse to essentially negate it entirely)

Curse of Dakkru (Dark Way)
Realm 8
Casts Dakkru's curse upon the victim (doesn't last the same length of time as the curse for leaving the Death Realm)

Negate Barrier (Brown way)
Realm 4
Gives the player the ability to squeeze past some already partially-open barriers such as the bars in the sewers. (A lower level spell than 'Open Passage' already suggested)

Self Sacrifice (Interway- Crystal, Red and Dark maybe?)
Realm 10
Kills yourself and all those within range you are not grouped with whatever their stats. May only be used once per day.

Create Barrier (Blue and Azure interway maybe?)
Realm 7
Creates an impassable barrier for the duration of the spell (casting it would create a wall of swirling aether that you would click to place -like a book or object- in front of a door or something).

---------Edit--------

A few more additions:

Coercion (Azure way)
Realm 6
Cast on an NPC to force them to offer you a quest or the next quest in the series (only if one is generally available but you haven't got the required Faction level)

(Crystal/Red/Dark etc.) Sphere of Protection (for each way)
Realm 4
Casts a defensive sphere that protects from spells of the same way of magic- i.e. 'Red Sphere of Protection' would protect against enemy red spells. There should be one for each way because logically those with competence in a way should be able to protect themselves (partially) from that same way.

Granted or negated Wishes / Re: OOC Magic Fair followup event 8/28/11

Sounds great!  \\o// Sadly I cannot come as I'm busy at that time with work...

If someone could bring up on my behalf the fact that (so I've been told through several people), there are several glyphs that do exist, but cannot be gotten through quests at the moment (and thus I assume only through a GM's reward?), that it would be fantastic if they were made slightly more available.

By this, I mean they should potentially only be accessible (won) through a very difficult series of quests (winch-access level series of quests)- which requires more programming so is a long term solution, or as a short term solution, have a GM every once in a while (at the monthly markets perhaps?) sell them or auction them at very high prices.

Hope it goes well! Thanks!

I find it amusing how most all of the wishes in the wish list board are requests to make levelling easier...   :P

That being said, there is a little click every time a message comes through if it's on a chat tab that you're currently watching, so I don't see any reason this couldn't or shouldn't be done...

3. When making a delta blade, it totally disappears, until quenched; can this be fixed?

this can be fixed when you make the graphic for delta blades

Sure! As far as I know, all that needs doing is taking the .gif or whatever other images for the alpha and beta blades and changing the colour of it very slightly... I should probably volunteer myself to the 2D art devs... if they need anyone?

2. Alphabetize the list of quests (please?)

Yes please! On a related note, if the 'completed quests' could say what the final reward was, that would be amazing too!

Thanks very much for hosting it Daevaorn  \\o// It was quite interesting! If you do it again, and I hope that you do, I'd love to be a contestant.

It got too late to continue the hunt for the treasure... I take it that it was found in the end? Where exactly was it?

Wish list / Re: A Suggestion for the Implementation of Music
« on: August 19, 2011, 12:17:28 pm »
If it was in a song book (that you could write in and then put in the 'mind slot'), could it be programmed to write in the book a code that played back music?

For Example:

Key = C Major [choose from many different keys, some instruments might be different from others]
Tempo = 120 [rate at which the music plays back]

8N.7N.5N.6N.8N.8N.8N-8N_7N.7N.7N_8N.8N.8N-8N_

That would play the first line of 'Mary Had a Little Lamb.' Here's how it works:

-The numbers would define the range- say the instrument had eight notes, 8N would be the highest note, 1N the lowest.

-'N' would equal one note at the tempo given.

- The '.' (period) would define a break in the note without a rest, and the '_' would define a rest at the tempo provided.

-finally, two notes can be tied together 8N-8N with a '-' (hyphen) to make a note twice the length of the tempo provided.

it's already finished it needs merging and testing.

As Weltall says though, it's already done- but this is how I would do it myself...

You find yourself travelling back to Hydlaa from Ojaveda after running several errands- a few letters to deliver, some tefusang teeth for Trasok, some Falka oil for Jayose's lamps. Halfway down the road, you are shocked to see a herd of rampaging Maulbernauts, bellowing their calls of fury and beating their chests. Worst of all, they are blocking the main road back.

Thinking you had better climb into the hills to avoid them, you find yourself in Camp Banished, and talking to the affable (though you suspect quite drunk) rogues therein. Tucked away in one of the tents, you see a pamphlet of the sort you've seen before, written in the distinctive teal blue-coloured ink of the Klyros. Once again, curiosity gets the best of you.

Something is Rotten in the Dome... Part III

The Klyros awoke to a slap on the face. Another piece of rotten meat had been thrown into the cell through the window. Though he gagged at the foul taste, he choked it down with all ravenous haste. The last three or even four meals (he couldn’t quite remember) had been thrown out of reach and gobbled up by the vile rats with which he shared this dank stone tomb. He knew not if throwing the meat out of reach was the malicious intention of his jailers, if they didn’t realise, or simply didn’t care. Not that it mattered much.

Several more days passed with the usual infrequent meals. Fortune would have it he always had enough to drink- a small channel in the stone around the window of his cell meant water constantly dripped onto the floor. This particular cell must have been ancient- centuries of water droplets had carved a small basin into the stone floor. The Klyros spent most of his waking hours counting the drops and watching the ripples they caused- the light of the Azure Sun peaking through the cell, reflecting off the pool, and he spent many hours, days, lost in a trance of thought- timeless and unending.

His thoughts turned often to his encounter with the two ladies and the two guards- Rikania and Molveni… Rikania, and Molveni… The names sounded familiar, as though he had read about them in a book once. He knew they were powerful too, and wealthy. But what were they up to? The Klyros had no idea yet many scenarios of evil mages played themselves out through his mind, and he knew the trumped-up charges might be the least of his problems. He was only curious at the sounds coming from inside the iron tower, and meant no real harm… and yes, one is technically not allowed in the dungeons, but the mining is better down there than at the public mines outside of town. ‘A member of the Onyx Dagger clan? Seriously!?!’ he thought to himself. The Klyros knew they would probably plant evidence into his possessions, taken away from him after the arrest. ‘And what of my precious dark broadswords? I know, I know, strictly they aren’t legal, but they are antiques, forged by my grandfather back in Wysthinae.’ The Klyros sighed with a heavy heart. He knew whatever happens, it wouldn’t be good. He began to think he was just going to be left in this cell, alone, to rot away forgotten.

‘Thunk’… ‘thunk thunk’… The Klyros woke to a most unusual sound, and saw in front of his eyes three green apples had been gently pushed though the window and had landed in the pool of water. Delicious, wonderful apples! The Klyros was elated and gorged down on the first before suddenly worrying they were poisoned. His joy was swiftly replaced by the sickness of great worry and fear, but after several minutes, he began to relax once again. He felt no poison, no looming illness and felt better. Who, he wondered, could or would have rolled apples into his cell? He saved the other two for a later time knowing how infrequent meals generally were. He spent the rest of the day in a deep ponder, but slept better that night than any he could remember since arriving.

‘Thunk’… ‘thunk’… Two more apples fell into the pool. “Wait!” the Klyros shouted. “Please!?!” There was no answer, but he could hear shuffling feet outside. “I know someone’s out there!”

A raspy diminutive voice whispered back- “Shhhhh! You’ll reveal me… Just know a few of us are watching out for you. Hang on a while longer…”

“Who are you?!?” he shouted back, but no response was given. The Klyros slumped back onto the floor, his chains rattling against the stone. He munched on an apple, in a pensive sulk.
Three days passed without any more visits. Rotten slabs of clacker meat had still been periodically hurled into the cell, but only on the third day having eaten all the apples and wishing he had more did he choke down the vile sinew.

Two more days passed, and the Klyros was becoming increasingly troubled, and hours upon hours were spent sitting against the cold stone and watching the drops of water fall one by one into the pool, scattering dancing wisps of light from the crystal far above around the room. He was completely lost in thought and was very startled by the sudden bellow.

“Right-ho!” a guard shouted from outside the window. The Klyros nearly died then and there from the surprise. “Stand up you despicable reprobate! You’re going in front of the Octarch himself! Can’t see myself why he’s interested in the likes of you, but orders is orders.”

A small part of the wall against which the Klyros had been leaning disappeared, the distinctive groaning earthy sound of Brown way magick could be heard, and the Klyros strained to adjust his eyes to the light outside his cell. All he saw was a mage a few paces away before a bag was once again hastily shoved over his head by a Dwarven guard.

“Heheheh…” the dwarf chuckled. “Think you were going to see whereabouts these cells were eh?” Not a chance. Now I’m thinkin’ you’re too weak to give me any trouble, but just know I’ve got a large club here and I’m not afraid to bludgeon you with it. Got it!?!”

The Klyros had no choice but to comply...

A couple weeks ago, I was thinking myself about doing [in the best British tradition] a 'Pub Quiz,' in-game but haven't been able to find the time to do so. I'll try my best to come to this!
