oh yah, what is the difference between open beta and beta?  Isn\'t beta just addind the finishing touches?

I started this game in March and someone told me that they were going to wipe the characters soon.  Now in May, they stil haven\'t.  What timeline exactly are we looking out?  A few days, weeks, months, years, decadeds more?  Just curious, because the game sounds cool.  Also, I have heard the game is still in Pre-Alpha stage.  Is this the case?  How long do you guys think it will be until it is in a final stage?

I am a little confused with all the class descriptions in the manual.  Basically,  it seems as if I like melee.  Does that limit me to dwarfs?  Any alternates to dwarfs?  Also, if I want to do melee, it is unclear which stats to add to.  Since I am just starting, should I add all to Strength?  Basically, I would really appreciate somewhat of a clear beginners guide.  I read the one on the site and it is just too much information too soon.  All you really experienced players out there, I tried Planshift a long time ago, but gave up because I could figure it out.  I kept getting killed by rats of all things.  Anyway, maybe list the basic steps I should take to have a strong start as a melee something.  Thanks.
