Technical Help: IN GAME bugs (after loading world) /

What drivers are you using, my Radeon 8500 also experienced major drops in framerate when at e.g. the plazaa, using the open source drivers. ATI\'s binary drivers are *much* faster, I really suggest you try them. There\'s one catch though, if I\'m not in GL mode, i.e. doing stuff on the desktop, the display just freezes when I perform certain actions (you know, when you can only move the mouse cursor and nothing else works). So you\'d have to switch your drivers every time you are not planning on playing planeshift, which is kind of annoying. Anyway, you should decide for yourself. I even get 15+ fps from the top of the tower with those binary drivers.

A word of warning though, 750 MHz is pretty slow for planeshift, I used to play on a P3 866 MHz, and in some parts, most notably the plazaa, I got some really bad framerates.

I have had exactly the same problem: either the system was freezing completely, or the graphics were just locked, but the system was still reachable, or a segfault, or an illegal instruction. I was running Xorg 6.8 at the time and using their drivers for my Radeon 8500. Since the Xorg (and for that matter XFree\'s) drivers are full of memleaks, I decided to install ATI\'s proprietary drivers, and I\'m not experiencing system freezes anymore. You should try the same.

EDIT: I was running Debian until some weeks ago, I switched to Ubuntu (Debian based) you might want to check it out, it\'s much more up to date, extremely easy to install (I basically did not have to configure anything to get a running system with everything working perfectly), and it\'s Debian based, so no need to learn a new system. You might want to check it out too.

EDIT#2: The ATI drivers are also much much MUCH faster then the ones supplied with X. E.g. on the large tower in Hydlaa, I used to get a handful of frames every second, now I get 17+.

Fall damage also seems ping related, theo ther day I was playing with a ridiculously high ping, and at places where I would normally be damaged for over 80%, I was only damaged 10%.

Technical Help: IN GAME bugs (after loading world) / Rats, again
« on: April 17, 2005, 02:55:12 pm »
Hey I thought I\'d just post this. Yesterday while I was playing I noticed that rats have a tendency to get sucked up by the ceiling. This one rat was basically glued to the ceiling at one point, you could see his legs and tail and all. Another rat was walking merily along the sewers stairs until it noticed I was after it trying to smash its head in, when it beamed up to the ceiling. Makes it kinda hard to kill them.

I am experiencing this \"low sensitivity\" problem in first person mode only, and then only in horizontal direction. It\'s not really a sensitivity problem but it porabably has something to do with the way the mouse is centered again, after movement. I used to have this sort of problem in my own programs. If I move the mouse slow, there is no detectable movement. If I move the mouse very rapidly, the screen does rotate left or right.

Technical Help: IN GAME bugs (after loading world) / Rats

Yes rats. Everybody loves them. Everybody hunts them. Everybody kills them. Unfortunately they tend to get stuck in walls.

I realize that it has been a known bug that monsters get stuck in walls. I just encountered three(!!!) rats at more or less the same location. One was stuck under the floor, while two of them were buried like a couple of (in-game) meters inside the wall (hence one cannot even see them). I was just wondering if they get respawned at some point or that they are staying, being stuck there for ever. If so, isn\'t is possible to periodically reset the rats, because this very important source of money is kind of getting rare. I imagine that this will cause huge problems once the characters are getting reset and everyone has to go after them again.

You don\'t have a scanner on your computer?! So you want to scan the image of the display with your scanner? That\'s one way of creating a screenshot... a bit bothersome but sure, should be possible. Except if you don\'t have a scanner, in that case you might want to resort to Moogie\'s approach.

... that\'s just great, these people have put years of work and dedication into this game, it\'s free for download and it\'s free to AND YOU HAVE THE FREAKIN GUTS TO START FLAMING AROUND LIKE THIS, sorry but that just pisses me off. The mods should ban your ip permanently from the game servers and this forum.

Some more info would be helpful such as:
* what operating system are you using (win98 has/had some issues with the updater, see the forums)
* exactly what steps have you taken in running the program, e.g. what files did you (double)click on

BTW, next time you enter a topic try searching the forum first, there is a topic with almost exactly the same title as this one, and identical content just 10 lines below this one...

Well, I found out something interesting. I accidentally switched to one of the ttys (that\'s what they\'re called right?) while playing PS, when switching back to X, the game ran much smoother. No excessive disk activity anymore, and a playable framerate, even with sound enabled. This occurred after I installed the new soundcard BTW.

I also noticed another thing. Before switching back to text mode, I could actually use mouselook in first person mode. After switching back to X, I can only use mouselook to look vertically around the scene, i.e. I can only look up and down, not sideways. Should I report this as a bug somewhere?

It might be helpful, but what about the fun of exploring and finding out yourself?
