see, I think that\'s going too far...  hiding gender is easy, race only slightly harder (unless you\'re kran, dwarf or something similarly odd shaped)- it\'s when everyone becomes completely the same size and shape that you get excessive wierdness.

and I don\'t think these should be rare, magical, or all that incredable... how hard is it to get a piece of fabric, pull it up over your face and hide your identity (I own a cloak, and my girlfriend made her own- so the answer to these is- not very.)

I like the idea.  obviously it should be way off in development, but the idea that some pieces of information would be cloaked (changing the name above their head to \"cloaked figure,\" and regular say bits coming from some only slightly more identifying piece would be good) while others aren\'t (tells would be silly to cloak, and cloaking shouts just beggs for abuse).

as for the \"knowing people\'s names\" I assume you learn people\'s names through 2 methods (aside from the standard hi, my name is) that cover for the floating id syndrome;
description and reputation.  Joe may look like joe in real life, but I don\'t have any idea how to tell people apart on facial features in game.  There are huge tracks of my character\'s life I\'ve never played (how often does your  character use the restroom?  I\'ve been to the sewers, but where are the toilets anyway?).  I assume some interactions just go unplayed (talking to the landlord that doesn\'t exist about the room my character can\'t get to) and in these interactions I hear about some of the more noteable people (or people who I talked to because they were there and forgot to ask names from- something that happens to me irl fairly often).  The other side is exactly what was noted before- people in the past (and present to some degree) often wore things that identify who they are and who they are wish (gang signs and army/police uniforms are examples of modern items- the aforementioned coat of arms was for the same purpose).

generally- \"nametags\" don\'t bother me, but I don\'t see any reason why we shouldn\'t allow people to \"hide\" them on occasion- especially if doing so encourages RP.

my understanding of that text comes from the skill descriptions for Argan, Esteria, and Lah\'ar...

Being silent means only that your voice is not heard.
In a democracy those who vote rule, while those who are silent change nothing.
If you want change you must do something to make change- not allow change to be something done to you.

and with a 101 charisma and 8 ranks in dark way I cast a touch spell that *might* do more damage than the creature\'s regeneration.  I don\'t disagree with your discription, but you\'re ignoring the fact that it doesn\'t appear to ever get better and scrapping playability.

Well, with and Intelligence of 95 and 12 levels of Blue Way, Freeze still pretty much sucks.

I assume you are comparing the damage you do with magic to that which you do with a sword.
Consider what you are trying to do using flame burst; with the power of your mind, you are forming a fireball in your hand and throwing it at your enemy. With freeze you are cooling down every part of a creature so that their temperature drops dramatically. This is not some thing to be tried upon a whim, it is a life long journey to perfection requiring both strength of mind and a strong focus of  character.

Also consider this:
With a sword, even with very little training you can kill a man. With more training, yes you will become better at killing men, but try taking on an army of men or a herd of large beasts. One sword, no matter how skilled you are with it, will not be of much use.
However, take red magic. Without much training fire magic is little more use than a flaming torch (which requires no training at all to use) however with a dedication to training in this art, fire is at your command. With fire obeying your will what difference does it make if you are against one man or one hundred the outcome is the same, the only change is the number of coffins.

Currently with a will of 93 and a skill in the red way of 2 I am no more than an inexperienced conjurer. Yes it would be easier to skin a few rats with a broadsword each day and make enough money to buy bread and ale. But I wish to become a sorcerer, and whilst training in magic is a sacrifice, everything in life is like that and so I do not see the problem.

Also, loot drops etc. are done by the rules and settings departments, while fixing bugs in code is done by programming. I see no logic in a department sitting around doing nothing waiting for another to finish what it\'s doing.

I don\'t disagree with that, I do disagree with

I\'ve got issues with that logic, especiall since the devs are working on a client to allow them to alter drops and items more easily.  it seems like trying to fix the cash/drop problem before the actual combat system/programming whatever is putting the cart before the horse and asking for more trouble.

Mercat; I think you\'re getting issues confused.  you *always* need to fix bugs.  Playability issues will always suffer when bugs go unfixed and are they tend to be harder to fix than things like adding loot (done some programming elsewhere, so I\'m making assumptions here).  attempts to improve the loot/progression is underway elsewhere (trust me; I\'m worried about the magic system cost/reward ratio), but not pertinent to the discussion of whether or not there is a bug, and bugs always need fixed simply because they aren\'t supposed to be there.
If it weren\'t a bug, and were an intentional balance system your discussion of loot might be in order- but I don\'t think anyone will ever intentionally institue a situation (outside of ability/spell/etc use) where monsters can get attacked without retribution.

if you\'re going to limit training from NPCs then you need to allow PCs to train other PCs first- otherwise a lot of people are going to get frustrated that there\'s no redaly available training.
Personally, I think it\'s a Bad Idea(tm) to require PP, money, \"practical experience after training,\" and some other time requirement.
In real terms; if I\'m doing these lessons when it\'s convenient for this joe that has nothing better to do then spend all day standing in one place, what am I paying him for?  If he wants money why isn\'t he risking his neck killing rats and running errands?  further, if I wanted to play a character\'s every waking moment of life I\'d play Sims, or some other non-RPG non-adventure based game.
In playabilty terms; it\'s just a bad idea because it penalizes players for having the audacity to treat the game as a pastime instead of real life.

I\'m all for player based economies.  I think that there should be some solid and real economy limits on the amount of money and loot circulating (meaning NPCs not \"spontaneously generating\" and destroying cash and items that they get).  However, making it more difficult to learn skills seems like a bad way to approach that.

Solanon isn\'t the only non-mac user having the problem (I\'m getting the same thing on windows machines).  I also get the same visual effects going down the hole, but I\'ve never fallen through the world going that direction (and I find jumping down to the middle or bottom of the stairs avoids it).
Also, trying to jump out of the stairs partway up like someone suggested got me embedded into the non-space behind the walls.

it has come to my attention that flame burst is, actually, a worthwhile spell because there is a bug.
you can fire it 3-4 times before a monster notices it\'s taking damage.

ok, I can understand that.  up to now all I\'d heard is that\'s the way it is- so I thought I\'d see what I could do to make that not the way it is. ;)
If it\'s on the plate then great.  If there\'s something I can do to help get it done (or done faster, or whatever) well, yeah.

actually, I usually go do something else during those load screens... so it was easy to miss.  silly me.
that is, however, where I finally saw it- just took me a while to figure out that \"wipe\" meant \"all of it.\"

I was just caught off guard when I finally found out about it (after spending a week trying to build up a character).  There\'s nothing about it on the main page to the site and I was buisy learning the game not sifting forums, so I had no idea that the details of this wipe were going to be so devastating.
