Linux Specific Issues / Re: Wait a minute...WTF?

-snip-

Yeah... It is very, very, very, bad to be root all the time. In fact, it should be avoided as much as possible (though there are times when it is far simpler/easier/faster to get things done that way, and for them you might do so).

*Nix root != (does not equal) windows administrator. Root can -this is no exaggeration- destroy the install/filesystem (and it doesn't take a great deal to do so, just one [wrong?] command) and in some situations can damage hardware (I think...).

In short DO NOT DO I!

You are right, it is kernel related problem. The installer is UPX-packed executable and it needs permission to execute code stored in stack area.

As root use command:

sysctl kernel.exec-shield=1

(I think echo \"1\" > /proc/sys/kernel/exec-shield would work too)

then run Planeshift installer.

The second one worked for me. The first one didn't. Thank you :).

Dependency hell, forgetting to modify the xorg.conf when I install the NVIDIA driver or switch kernel.

I think those ar ethe two main problems I\'ve had with GNU/Linux, I haven\'t gotten planshift running yet because I haven\'t been able to get the newest update and some other stuff.

Fedora 3?

You could try Simply Mepis.

Thanks for the help, everyone!

By \"netcasting\" you mean internet radio and that sort of thing, don\'t you?

Rhythmbox is the audio player that I usually use, but the mp3 codec stuff isn\'t working* so I\'ve been using xmms.

*I can\'t remember how I did it i my Fedora 3 install (now use 4).

EDIT: I can use Gxine for internet radio type stuff, you might like ot try that.

How does one do what you are talking about? I\'d like to be able to have multiple sounds going on :(

EDIT: I\'ve got an Asus Z71 laptop. I think the card is Intel with a Realtek core or something along those lines (I odn\'t know much about sound cards).

Hmm, this could be good. I expect it would be possible to throw in the ability to save it to a USB drive (or writable hard drive partition) and just update to that; giving you a portable, ready-to-use version of Planeshift with lower system specs (\'cause you\'d cut out all the things that planeshift doesn\'t need).

My ideas are probably very bad (\'specially since it\'s quite hot right now), but you never know.

As I remember \"capitalized\" originated in the U.S.A.

We\'d better stop talking about grammar and spelling...

Thanks for clearing that up. Could you tell me where/if I can get PlaneShift_CBV0.3.011.linux.x86-UPDATE3.run?

Did Platyna give any reasons (other than the rather hard to understand ones on her site) why she left?

Linux Specific Issues / What's going on? What happened to Platyna's site?

I just tried to connect to http://planeshift.xpam.de/ to download an update and I got a page saying

This is site has been closed, send your thanks to Moogie who used all her connections and social engineering abilities to turn my Planeshift work into a nightmare.

Planeshift has lost about 400 GB of traffic/month and a devoted to her work Linux maintainer (not that Talad cares).

You may want to take a look on Once MMORPG or RPG Players Community though.

?(  Does this mean that Platyna got upset about something and has decided to stop doing what he was kind enough to do  for us?

Here in Victoria it\'s spring (I think) and a relatively cool day (at least in this bit of it). In winter we et rain and cold days (about cold 5-20 warm degres C), in summer we get heat and hot days (cool 20-40 hot). There are a few mountians and things where it snows.

Does that help?

Maybe I\'m not so lazy after all.
The mesh was easy, the texture settings I got from a site (I can\'t remember the address).

I\'m not very good, I\'m still learning.

I\'m tempted to post something I made in Blender, but I\'m too lazy to find somewhere to upload it.

I\'ve come across one that looks very likely, Digital Star\'s PowerNote Z71VP.
