The way I thought of that the FR could be improved as an experience is that there could be differnet spawn points determined by the number of times you have died.

So the first 5 (say) times you die you spawn somewhere on the lower walkway, next 5 on the upper walkway and thereafter in the current start cave.  As the DR is expanded spawn points are added deeper in the realm or in more puzzling places and maybe even random places for the really suicidal.

It would be necessary to keep track of the number of deaths each character has, but there could also be some high level spells that reduce a players death memories (reduce the recorded deaths total) which may give players a method to buy their way out of the DR a little quicker provided someone performed the spell on them before they died. ( The spell can only be performed outside the DR and you cannot perform the spell on yourself.)

Just some random ideas on improvements from some who, after only a month of playing now regards the DR as just a minor inconvienience or even a shortcut to get back to the Plazza from places in the wilds.

Linux Specific Issues /

I was sure the smpeg I was using was the i586 one but I found a earlier version (4.4 instead of 4.5) that is x86-64 and with that I can use PS again, so it was the wrong binary.  Thanks for all the help and patience.

All this just goes to show that my in game character (a bit simple and stupid) is not far from the real me :D

rpm -V smpeg gives no output but the library files are not installed.

uninstall with yast as that is what I used to install it, then reinstall smpeg-0.4.5-228.1.i586.rpm from Konsole gives the same results. running rpm --erase gives error: package smpeg-0.4.5-228.1.i586.rpm is not installed.

Installing with -v option does not give much more info, only 1 line - Preparing packages for installation... before returning to command prompt.  Installing via command prompt does update yast to show that it is installed even though it isnt.

I have absolute no idea what is going on here.

entering -
 rpm -ql smpeg

gives the result -

/usr/bin/plaympeg
/usr/bin/plaympeg.window
/usr/lib/libsmpeg-0.4.so.0
/usr/lib/libsmpeg-0.4.so.0.1.4
/usr/lib/libsmpeg.la
/usr/share/doc/packages/smpeg
/usr/share/doc/packages/smpeg/CHANGES
/usr/share/doc/packages/smpeg/COPYING
/usr/share/doc/packages/smpeg/README
/usr/share/man/man1/plaympeg.1.gz

entering -
 rpm -ql libsmpeg

gives me -
package libsmpeg is not installed.

In fact none of the 3 lib files are present on the system, I have no idea why yast claims they are installed or why they were not in fact installed.

Great idea - only drawback is that the file is not on my computer, YAST claims it is installed but I cant find it.

I have now got smpeg installed and that gives me libsmpeg-0.4.so.0, but psclient still wont run as it cant find libsmpeg-0.4.so.0, and to be honest I cant find it either even though YAST claims it is installed.

What I have not yet done is Tharizdun\'s suggestion of rebuilding from source, mainly as I\'m not sure exactly what to do, if someone can lead me throught he process I am willing to try it.

Linux Specific Issues / psclient stopped working
« on: December 29, 2005, 01:18:54 pm »
Everything has been working great for a few weeks apart from a few known problems, occasional crashes and missing textures being the worst ( mostly down to incompatability between present version CS and AMD64FX)

I have recently upgraded my Suse 9.3 to 10.0 and Planeshift has stopped working, running psclient from a terminal gives -

./psclient.bin: error while loading shared libraries: libsmpeg-0.4.so.0:
cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

Further investigation of Suse 10 does not show this as being part of the distribution any more, unless it is hidden in some other library. I have found a opy of it in Mandriva 10 but it is throwing up even more missing dependancies.

Does anyone know a quick way for me to get back to Hydlaa?

... and Harnquist has a book you can read about mining and where to look, at least for gold.  Of course you will need a compass to follow the directions in the book and then ...

Of it is much easier to ask in game, like everyone has said, it is a role playing game - so role play, you\'ll find it much more fun.

Technical Help: IN GAME bugs (after loading world) / Missing textures
« on: December 23, 2005, 05:34:00 pm »
I would just like to confirm that there are issues with odd bits of missing textures in many places, DR, Laanx dungeons and the magic shop all spring to mind.  These are known to be missing by many Mac users but I have an AMD64 FX running Linux and they are missing with me as well.

It seems from searching the forums that it is a known problem with the Game Engine that should be corrected with the next upgrade, but I have no idea when that is expected.

Could someone that does know please confirm these facts and if possible give me some idea of how long I will be playing while wearing Zaphods sunglasses. ( the ones that go black when you are in danger just so you wont worry to much)

Linux Specific Issues / Font size
« on: December 14, 2005, 02:51:55 pm »
I am making an assumption (always fatal :D ) that this is a linux issue and specifically my box.

The font size of all menu items is to big, I can see the top 60% of every dialog, the chat window is OK but dialogs with traders and utility menus are affected.  I have not found any specific settings for font size or style.

Could be I have a font missing and another is being substituted.

yes this death realms idea needs a rethink.

Mostly new players die early on due to stupidity, I type /die to see what happened :/

It is almost impossible for noobs to get out, especially when they are still trying to learn the interface, I tried all the tricks I could, like folowing people, but I seemed to chose the people who were lost already. then fall down and restart.  Of course the more experienced players know just what to do and where to go so them it is just a minor inconvience to be sent there, 2 minutes later they are out.  This is biased towards punishing the noobs.

If you are really stuck and not seeing anyone or anything, try typping /die to get you back to the begining, or delete your character and restart, being careful to avoid dying from now on.  This isnt my idea of RP but it does get frustrating after days.

It seems to me that the whole Linux side of this is stuffed, except perhaps if you are an \'expert.\'

The sticky on the main page gives an install that doesnt work, the \'Installers\' thread here gave something that seemed to work but I couldnt connect as the server semed to be down, then it claimed it was up but was to busy to talk to me, then I got to char gen and took some time to RTFM, by which time the server was down again.

Now I get the wrong version problem, the \'probems with updating\' thread gives some clues and a link to a script, that seems like it will fail, I have seen hundreds of error maessages so far about not being able to read or write to ~/.cvspass and messages about files found in discarded section, but I\'ll let it finish running and see what happens.

Technical Help: Problems BEFORE entering the game / how to update?
« on: May 22, 2005, 05:39:59 pm »
I have through many trials and misdirections got as far as having an install that seems to work. I found a clue about 64bit operation (on a Suse 9.3 box)on the 8th page of one thread.

The installer gives the message to run psupdater, pssetup the psclient but I cannot find any script for psupdater.

If I miss out the update then I can run setup and the client but of course get refused access to the server as my install is not up to date. I did see something about there was no updater for PPC but it seems that there is a way to do it under Linux, just that I cant seem to find out how. I am probably missing something really simple and will be totally embarrased when someone points it out to me.
