Is there no way to edit the config files to turn off the display of particle effects?  I searched them myself by I'm not enough of a graphics terminology expert to know what to play with in there.

Yeah that has been around for ages, I tend to be able to avoid it by taking a different path when I exit the sewers.

Thanks Stueben your post got me thinking and I decided to run a full check for spyware, viruses, rootkits etc.  My system appears clean, barring anything new and unusual.  I turned on packet logging and checked my security software.  I had about 4 hangs each within seconds of logging in once I was near the crafting stations around Harnquist.  Each time there is no other activity besides psclient.exe receiving packets.  There was only one error (before one hang) where one of the asianet servers (po something) was unreachable.  I also noticed from the following tracert log that it's those servers which seem to add a lot of lag to my connection to the fragnetics server.

There is nothing really suspicious about any of this from what I can see.  I don't really mind that the ping is in the range shown, that is acceptable to me for any internet game.  I've seen it up just over 900ms at worst.  I kind of wonder if those asianet servers are configured to drop the connection if there is a timout of more than a second, but can't prove that.  I'll keep checking logs I guess.

I'm not sure what you mean by elaborating on event log data.  I was just checking it to see if some process was generating exceptions or faults, but nothing was in there that suggested a problem at the operating system level.

I even kind of suspect the video driver in that I recall having an independent GL driver that I used back in the old crystal hunt days.  I went looking for one but since most graphics card manufacturers build GL support into their drivers now it's hard to find one that looks good.

*** EDIT ***
Hmm, I just looked at errorlog.txt in the planeshift directory and found this.  Last update was today a few minutes before I checked it.  Could be nothing but it looks as if the current build is setup to look for source files on Luca's system.  I am tempted to download the source (if it's still available, set everything up in a directory named luca then try again hehe).  The following is a bit of the log, there is more, I cut it down to show the types of messages in it.

Wish list / Re: Burnt on Glyphs

Sorry for not reading the whole thread before posting, just adding my own two trias here.  Basically, I think the issue of pickpocketing glyphs could be mitigated by making the glyph bags soul-bound so that they cannot be taken off the owner's body.

Wish list / Crafting to account for "real world" internet issues
« on: January 23, 2007, 06:49:02 am »
I have found that if someone looses their connection while they have something in a crafting machine then that item becomes free for anyone to take.  That is not bad, but I feel it could be improved by returning the item(s) to the inventory of the player so that they won't loose it and can just log back in and keep trying until it works (as in no crash in the middle).

I ask this because I have problems during certain times and it really discourages me from crafting except during a certain time window.  I realize that it is a little artificial, but with all the effort required to do crafting I am sure other players would appreciate it also.

have some1 get a message when they have theire book (woking with stock) equiped in mind and fully trainig in metallurgy that says that you dont know what is going to happend with your iron?

I have metallurgy up to 5 now and, from my experience, that is the error message that you get when you put in the wrong ingredients or number of them to produce a final product.  In some cases your skill may be too low, it can help to ask other players for information on this.  The one exception I have found is when making steel stock you are given that message, but when you follow the correct procedure you still get the finished product.

Yes, coal does have a use in metallurgy.  I believe we are not supposed to post specific information here, so I won't spoil your fun in discovering.  Best bet is to ask around in-game.  Most people will flat out ignore you but there are a few helpful souls who will give you information.

Technical Help: IN GAME bugs (after loading world) / Full System Hang
« on: January 20, 2007, 08:11:16 am »
Every few minutes or so my system will completely hang while playing PS.  All I can do is power it down or hit the reset button.  I did not used to have this problem with PS in the earliest two builds so I suspect it is client based, maybe a graphic code thing.  I have tried various settings changes using ps setup and options in-game.

AMD Duron 1.3Ghz  (Windows XP, SP2)
640 MB Ram
Geforce4 mx440 128mb   (93.71 forceware driver)
Soundblaster Live Value
Cable connection

Has anyone had a similar problem and found the solution?  It's not crashing so I can't get diagnostic info.  Event manager doesn't show anything other than the system starting up over and over.

**edit**

Hmm, a while after posting I was fiddling again and looked at the NVIDIA setup in my control panel, adjusted it from best quality to best performance and over the last few hours I have had markedly fewer hangs.  Maybe it is more of a driver related issue.  I don't really know if the fixes required would be up to Nvidia, Microsoft, or the devs heh, or maybe even me.  Oh well, just thought I'd post this little update in case it helps anyone.

*edit*

That last post was right after a hang, which turned out to be the first of many that happened every few seconds :/  Now I think the more stable period may have been more related to a low server population during the wee hours of the night.  But.. as you can see, I don't know for sure what the cause of the problem is.

***edit***

Over the last three days I have found a pattern.  During the period of 3 am to 10-11 am pacific time I get very stable play.  Any time before or after this window and I am constantly hanging.  Now, when the server went down one night and I tried to connect to see how the client would handle it, it hung.  This made me wonder, if the server drops my connection does my client just hang?  Maybe these problems are all about my distance from the server.  I live in Western Canada and the server is in Signapore.  Sometimes my ping is around 350-450ms, other times like outside that window it's up to 750 ms with up to 25% packet loss.  My connection latency tests out as 115ms so it looks like trip time is a real issue here.

So now the question is, can I configure my client not to give up easily?  I mean is there a timeout value I can change without messing things up.  And, does the server discriminate in some way that causes it to drop connections or even reset them and in so doing, hang the client?

Questions..questions.. I know.. I'm like that, sorry if it bothers anyone.

[ Ok, but may I ask what the reasoning is behind that policy?]

The most recent version of MinGW doesn\'t have reimp, but I went and downloaded the older version mentioned in the build guide and the reimp program was there.   However, it doesn\'t work, I have downloaded a library for the DevC++ compiler which is for MySQL, so at worst I\'ll have to puzzle it out over a longer period of time.

Now I\'m wondering how I will get the MySQL library converted to a format that MinGW supports because when I run the reimp command as shown in the build guide it just errors out.

Thank you zabeal, I have already downloaded all those libraries mentioned just in case the guide I was following wouldn\'t work for me.  But that guide you pointed me to does clear up how to setup the mysql db properly.  I\'m almost ready to try the first build :)

Thank you :)   I have Tortise CVS installed and it\'s downloading now.  Looks like I will have to download glut, Directx 9 SDK, and python since I am using Dev-C++.  Building this could get tricky.. here\'s hoping... hehehe   I\'m using DivineLight\'s build guide since it most closely resembles the environment I\'ll be building in.

Development Deliberation / noob question
« on: July 06, 2005, 10:30:28 pm »
Well, I am familiar with C++ and I have updated my 10yr old education by reading a couple of recent books on it.  I\'m not a game programmer but I did download the CS, and CE source hoping to learn a bit more about it so that maybe I could contribute in the long run or at least do a little game-world modeling of my own.

I went to Sourceforge and rooted around but I can\'t find the PlaneShift source.  Is that protected, or did I miss the right link to it?

General Discussion / hmm?
« on: June 29, 2005, 11:55:57 pm »
I\'ve seen several replies to my concern that there aren\'t anough loot dropping monsters.  It seems that several people think there\'s a better way to make money.  I wonder if such people play on another server with a different code-build.

On the public server (fragnetics) the only altnerative is mining which is a very low income yield on it\'s own.  Quests have been disabled since I started this release.  My e-mail has changed since the crystal hunt so I cannot get the crystals transferred (from what I\'ve read).  And, without trade-skill books we cannot process our mined ore and increase the profits from it.

So, I am really curious why people suggest that something is wrong with my approach.

I mean, it\'s even lower-yield to stand around a mob in a crowd (I\'ve seen up to 6 around a thug or rogue that drops swords), and alternate loot on it.  You\'d be better off killing rats or tefusangs constantly.

And, please don\'t interpret this as a attempt to make money on the forums, that is just a mean-spirited interpretation of what I am trying to do here.
