Linux Specific Issues / Re: Linux updater
« on: January 08, 2007, 04:46:15 am »
Looks completely OK to me. "Failed to update up!" seems to be pretty normal, and I've got used to the client telling me there are new updates available, even if there are none. You can play, which means it can't get any better even if you managed to get rid of those messages.

Thanks for the advice. I hadn't actually made the 'connection' between up and updater, up being the binary 'updater'.

Code: [Select]
mv download.tmp up
chmod 755 up

Linux updater should first delete a file before replacing it with new version (but it also must set proper file attributes afterwards). In most cases executable in use can be safely deleted without disturbing a running program. You can try it the following way: start updater then delete file "up" before download of registry ends. Don't forget to do "chmod 755 up" then.

Thanks heaps for the tip, worked like a charm.

Cheers all.

Hi all,

I thought I'd drop by the trusty forums to find an answer to my own updating woes, (Linux), and to a degree this thread has helped.

Like others have experienced while attempting to update, the download was very slow, (1-2k).

As a previous poster has mentioned download rates can vary markedly, however on my connection downloads usually come down at about 50-70k. While this is quite slow to others I know living nearby me with similar ADSL plans to myself, through other ISP's (180-200k), but I digress.

Apart from the slow download rate, I have also experienced another problem not mentioned by anyone else.

The update always appeared to 'hang' at 11% while fetching the file "up". So I left it updating while I went to do my grocery shopping today. Three hours later and there was still no progress beyond 11%.

I followed the advice offered by other posters in the following order.

1. launching the updater via the command line.

Unfortunately this did not improve my situation at all.

2. launching the updater via the command line with the '-auto' flag.

Yay! this worked to a point. Of the three files required "up" did not successfully update, (output provided below). Download rates also improved to something more 'typical' for my connection.

Code: [Select]
#:/opt/PlaneShift$ ./updater -auto

Newbie Help (Start Here) / Re: A Couple of hints for new players
« on: December 19, 2006, 01:39:16 pm »
Some interesting points have been raised throughout this thread.

I'm not entirely new to the game, having played on three occasions. I tend to revisit from time to time play for several months and then 'dissappear'. Usually this means that when I come back to the game there have been significant changes, so much so that in many ways I am just as much a 'noob' as someone who is new to the game.

Here are some observations about Planeshift that I would like to share.

As far as any RPG that I have played, (online or otherwise), it is certainly unique in that the potential 'scope' for roleplay and character development is really broad.  The foundations are being layed at present for what will no doubt become a truly living economy.

Over the last two periods of play the game has grown considerably in terms of world size, availability of crafting skills, and quests. It is notably more stable, and the balance of the game has improved markedly.

Quite incredible really for a game that is being developed by a group of people, in their 'spare time', and is still an 'alpha'.

Now on the real point of this post; as a newcomer it can take quite a while to 'get a start'.

1. When creating your character it would be prudent to pay attention to the choices you make, as in a sense they help to define your character.

2. When in game 'play' the character that you have created. This can be a little daunting, but as mentioned earlier 'attempts' at role playing will be more welcome than none at all. This can be difficult at times particularly when surrounded by those who don't seem to be interested in RP'ing at all.

3. In following this approach you will in time make good friends in game, who will be more than willing to share their wisdom with you. As a result you might likely receive an invite to join a guild.

4. Making money and / or building skills will take time initially, particularly as you begin empty handed. There are however a number of quests, (some quite simple to finish), that will help you start out, and get a feel for role play.

5. Patience and perseverance will be your friends. Both in game and with the game, (bear in mind that it is still in early developmental stages).

I do have some thoughts on the use of weapons at the beginning, if you choose to purchase one, bear in mind that they do depreciate in quality these days.

While it is possible to repair them the actual overall cost in keeping the weapon maintained will, (overtime), be more expensive than purchasing another one. This in itself is can be something of a disincentive, (to me anyway), but it you choose the path of the warrior you will need a weapon eventually.

Purchasing armour early on will be a considerable cost to the newcomer, and while offering protection, will degrade and cannot be repaired, (or so I believe), at present. My suggestion here would be to save your hard earned cash and spend it on training.

Gaining PP for training early on can be difficult also and this I think contributes to the current situation where people 'cue up' for a go at killing npc's. While earning currency is best achieved by mining, and depending on the choices made when creating your character, will most likely need 'training', and of course the purchase of equipment to begin.

There is something of a balance issue here, which I feel contributes to the confusion and frustration that some new players have. As a result you will need to spend quite a bit of time 'out of character' early on.  No doubt this will be addressed as the game develops, and the options available continue to expand.

I'll finish my rave for now.

Cheers all, and enjoy the game.

General Discussion / Re: Metallurgy - Iron stock smelting.
« on: December 14, 2006, 01:45:42 pm »
To all who have replied thankyou.

For Goldir, that is the most comprehensive round up of the skill that I have seen anywhere.

I need to say that I had asked quite a few people ingame as I prefer to do this as it provides opportunities to role play. I search the forums usually as a last resort.

In fact the problem was recently resolved ingame, (more on that later).

I must admit though that there are a number of the keywords that you suggested that I didn't use. Simply because they didn't relate directly to my enquiry, ie smelting/smithing Iron stock.

Thankyou the mule for clarifying those few points, I can now confirm that stock production can be achieved at level 0.

I would like to mention however most of the knowledge posted here I was able to get ingame ... eventually, including the solution, to which Goldir also eluded.

And now for the actual solution to the problem. I continued asking in game and after many enquiries a very helpful person through skillful roleplay indirectly mentioned the need to place the 'skill' book in mind. Hey presto problem solved!

I have some thoughts on this 'method', and to be kind I find it totally counterintuitive.

In all the roleplays that I have experienced knowledge & skills, are either gained through practical training, (payed for or otherwise) and or reading/studying (scrolls, books...) and then further developed through practice or repeated use (experience). There have also been instances where knowledge/skills have been passed on as a reward for services rendered, or completion of a task/quest.

Granted that Planeshift incorporates each of these in some form or other. But I've never encoutered this 'book in mind' thing before. Which I must say is why it never occurred to me.

After some thought, I have considered that perhaps it is a metaphor for 'keeping in mind' the training that has been received when performing a task.

On the other hand placing a book in a mind 'slot' also brings to mind the 'image' of placing a game cartridge into an old style console, without which the game cannot be played, or in this case the task cannot be achieved.

Getting back to other roleplays, once the skill is learned the knowledge 'stays' with you, all that is left is to apply it, in much the same way that we learn in normal life.

To that end, the only point that I agree with blokhed on is this method is just bizarre.

On a final and I hope positive note, in all other aspects the manner in which crafting is developing promises to be comprehensive, interesting and very worthwhile.

I'll shut up now.

Cheers.

Thanks for getting back to me on this.

If you're right then the person I spoke to in game must have been pulling my leg!

I checked the game log and they definitely told me they were level 0.

One way or the other I'll need to practise the skill more, though I recall reading in a thread somewhere that melting ore and casting ingots doesn't count towards building experience for metallurgy.

It's just a little frustrating at the moment as I've spent a good deal of time both in game (talking to others) and out of game (browsing the forum).

I appreciate that crafting, is in an ongoing state of development; as is the game for that matter. But some documentation would be useful as the advice and information in game and the forums on this topic is quite vague and often ambiguous.

Sorry about the rant, I do appreciate your feedback.

Cheers.

General Discussion / Metallurgy - Iron stock smelting.
« on: December 13, 2006, 09:47:32 am »
Hi all,

I've come to something of an impasse I'm afraid.

I have searched the forums using a number of keywords, and spoken to a number of people in game.

I am able to produce Iron Ingots and have completed the Iron Stock "quest" given by Harnquist.

My metallurgy skill is currently 0, though I have purchased training to as high as possible for now, (with no resultant change in level).

The problem is when I place the required number of molten Iron in the 'stock' or 'mold', the following messages are displayed.

Quote
"you probably should not leave 10 molten ore here"

despite the fact that I am using molten Iron not Ore and

Quote
"There does not seem to be the right amount to do anything useful"

yet I am using the exact quantity as per Harnquist's quest instructions, (confirmed by checking game logs).

I don't believe that my skill level is (0) is the problem as one of the players I spoke to ingame of metallurgy level 0 made some Iron stock to prove that it could be done.

It would seem that I am not doing something correctly or there is a prerequisite that I haven't yet met.

Any ideas, thoughts or suggestions would be most welcome.

Hi Neko,

Thanks for the tip. I'll try it out and get back to you.

I hadn't actually looked at the Tria total, as I 'assumed' there'd be a small item of some sort appear in my inventory.

Or at least a visual cue as to a reward being given, in much the same way as a message is displayed when you dig up some gold.

Otherwise it is too easy to go unnoticed.

Cheers.

Hi all,

I have done a search on this topic and have not found a suitable answer.

Also, as I am not entirely sure if this is a bug or not.

As such I don't know whether this the most appropriate part of the forum to post. My apologies if it is not.

On to the topic.

Upon receiving the quest, I strode of in search of the required items.

Whence I came in possession of said items I returned to Harnquist and gave them to him.

Harnquist, accepted graciously and said something like, 'take this in return'.

At this stage I received nothing, and the quest is listed as completed.

No great loss really as the items are easily found, or cheaply purchased.

The question remains, is this a bug, or known bug?

If not perhaps I have missed a step, I can't see how though as it is fairly straightforward.

Any thoughts or suggestions folks?

No spoilers please, just a simple "it's broken", or "you stuffed it up" will suffice.

Cheers.

General Discussion / Re: List of currently working skills.
« on: December 11, 2006, 10:09:18 pm »
Thankyou,

I had tried a number of searches, ie 'skills', 'current + skills' and so forth.

I wonder why there isn't any up to date documentation regarding this?

It would certainly help.

Cheers

With all due respect, I have conducted a search.

The 'list' I found was quite dated. Apart from that the forums are so huge now it has become increasingly difficult to find current and up to date information.

Cheers.

Hi all,

I have recently rejoined the game after a long period of inactivity.

Could anyone please either provide a list of currently working skills/stats or provide a link to one.
