Who? What? Where? Ah. No, I\'m not a dev-member. But that doesn\'t mean I can\'t be exited about the progress of planeshift, does it?

Allright. I only just found your thread in the MB bugs section in which you corrected some of the mistakes in PS\' history. I don\'t know which one of you was the first to mention those mistakes, but I am glad that the initiative has been taken and for that fact, I applaud.  :]

Good job, Mehallie. It\'s a great thing you actually took the initiative. A lot of new folks are going to have a much better first impression of planeshift because of you!

*applauds*

Thanks. Submitting the idea to the devs isn\'t neccessary, because the devs read these forums themselves, even though most of them don\'t post here.

Imagine a common trading system. Player 1 puts the stuff he offers in his offer-box and player 2 offers stuff in his box in return. Normally you can only insert inventory items and money into the box. Now, you can also insert a small icon representing a \'repair offer\' or \'smelt offer\'. When player 1 offers a repair, another screen pops up in which player 2 can offer an item he wants repaired. In this example player 2 wants his \'sword\' repaired, so he puts it in. Then the \'repair offer\' icon changes into \'repair sword\' and appears in player 1\'s offer box. If player 1 wants money in return for this service, player 2 will have to insert some money into his offer box.

When both players accept the deal, player 2\'s offered money will be given to player 1 and player 1 automatically starts to repair player 2\'s sword, which is then automatically given to player 2 again.

I hope that clears it up.

Wish list / Tradable Services
« on: March 02, 2003, 04:22:00 pm »
I find it rather weird that scam is such a big issue in most mmorpg\'s, while it can so easily be avoided.

If sevices - like repairing stuff, smelting bars, indentifying items, etc (examples, I don\'t know if these will be in planeshift) - were tradable in the same way as goods and money, scam would be virtually impossible, plus it would open the way for people to provide services to eachother without the hindrance of constant distrust.

So... What do you think?

In other words, just behave like a real person ;)

Welcome Sharaz, we can use some more clever Dutchmen here!

I suppose you mean religion(?)

I think it would be quite nice to have some kind of religious activity in planeshift, but maybe the rewards should be somewhat less concrete than items. There will probably already be many skills that reward you with items and I think a god would rather do more \'divine\' favors to those who devote their time to them.

The kind of reward I\'m thinking of, would be the oppurtunity to get special quests from the gods, or special powers, or maybe a luck bonus on everything you do...

Great. Someone who takes my idea seriously. :)

Well, your idea has merit, but unless done as a mini-game, I don\'t think you\'re going to be able to \"dig\" as your have it. I might see it where there are a finite places where a vein might occur and you \"dig\" there (temporarily take way a mesh or series of meshes), but even that may be a long shot. In general, anything that modifies the terrain probably won\'t be possible.

I already feared someone would say this. Like I said I don\'t know whether or not it\'s realizable, so I hope the devs know a way to do it. I think the ability to really dig into the earth will add a lot to the actual fun and versatility of mining. One of the things that makes traditional mining so boring is the fact that you have to stand at one place all the time, or move around in repeating sequences. It would be much more fun if you had to search around to find ore, either in the way I just described, or in another. (suggestions, anyone?)

I like this idea, but then again so did Origin when they made UO. :P

I haven\'t had the chance to play UO yet, so I didn\'t know they already had something like this. Perhaps it can be applied in a more original way.

Again, a nice idea, but how does this work if your already underground? The strata you are currently in, isn\'t necessarily the softest.

Mining area\'s at higher locations should provide access to the softer mining layers for newer people, while the area\'s at lower levels should provide instant access to the harder layers for the more experienced players. As for realism I don\'t think that\'s something to be concerned about yet. Someone will just have to come up with a realistic theory about the position and alignment of the earth layers.

About the earthquakes:

This is actually somewhat original and realizable. This could be done with a brief \'meteor storm\' like effect done randomly based off of where you are, your skill, etc.

In fact I made this up as a necessary evil to prevent the earth to be entirely hollowed out after a while, but it can be applied without all this \'digging\' stuff too.

I am always interested in new possibilities, newer and fresher ideas?.
But simply saying that you should have it be fun does not inspire much thought among the devs :-)

Of course. But I didn\'t post that to inspire you, rather to encourage a discussion about this subject that would eventually inspire you.

Allright, I\'ll carefully summarize what the mining system in my mind is all about. I don\'t know if it\'s realizable, so you\'ll have to see for yourself if this is of any use to you.

The mining area has the shape of a cliff, or a cave wall. When you stand next to the wall and use your pickaxe, you can start digging a tunnel into it. The rest is all about digging tunnels. You can dig in several directions. To get ore you have to find an ore vein first. You can try to find the ore vein by trial and error, or by using sysmological tools or spells. When you reach an ore vein you can try to extract some ore by digging into it. There is also a chance of finding a buried object anywhere you dig which you can try to excavate. It can be either a good thing like a sword or an amulet, or a bad thing like a kran-like monster from the mineral realm that will attack you.

The earth is devided into several layers. The first layer has rather soft rock that requires hardly any skill to dig through, but the layers deeper into the earth can only be reached by more skillfull miners. Also, the deeper you go into the earth, the more precious ore and gems you can find. The buried objects are also more valuable deeper in the earth and the monsters are more dangerous. Your digging speed in the deeper layers is lower too.

Every now and then there is an earthquake that restores the earth to the way it used to be by destroying all dug tunnels. The earthquake announces itself with trembling in time for the miners to make it out quick enough. However, if you are very deep in the earth there is a risk of not making it back in time, so you\'ll have to think about that if you\'re planning to reach the deeper layers.

Why my mining system is so good:
1. It involves risks (earthquakes, excavating a monster)
2. It involves competition (two miners who both found the same ore vein have to race towards it to get there first)
3. It\'s versatile (The higher your skill gets, the more risky, rewarding and exiting it becomes)
4. It involves some real skill (predicting where an ore vein is hidden, finding ways to use tools more efficiently, etc.)

I hope that does inspire the devs. :)

By the way, your signature looks familiar to me... Somehow... Is your signature related to a game called Age of Wonders? Or am I just rambling on about things nobody knows about? Anyways, nice signature.

Yeah, yeah it\'s no secret, I got the artwork in my sig from Age of Wonders.

By the way, that is a great game, I\'m always in for a good tcp/IP game if anyone feels like it :)

Hmm, I really had no idea that shape was called a rhombus in English. Guess I learned another thing about my name today :D (lol, forget the rest)

lol

The name Rhombus has absolutely nothing to do with either geometry or Rambo. :D

Rhombus is the name of a character in the RPG Fallout. I kinda borrowed the name from him.

Sounds good! But does that mean you are already working on those systems and you will not accept any suggestion from the outside anymore? In fact I have a pretty creative and radical mining system in mind, but if you\'re not even going to consider it, it might be a little futile for me to describe. :D

Well, I haven\'t really thought of something (yet), but in your case you would spend only a short time mining and the rest fighting. I can imagine you would prefer to do things quickly and easily, so maybe there should remain a way to do it the normal way. However, there are also people who choose to mine for hours to get rich, or just to get their skill up and that\'s when the rock-clicking gets very boring.

I think those people shouldn\'t mine only because they need the money or the exp, or even worse: because they\'re addicted to making progress with it, I think they should mine because it\'s so fun to do :)

Wish list / Boring mining/fishing
« on: January 28, 2003, 03:56:06 pm »
Hmm, I\'ve been thinking. In every mmorpg I\'ve played so far, the productive skills like mining and fishing were always very boring and repetative to do, while fighting was generally much more interesting.

Perhaps there should be more to those skills than just clicking rocks in planeshift?
