Technical Help: Problems BEFORE entering the game / Planeshift

I\'v played before but I re installed windows and I went to install and all of a sudden I updated started game and the window comes up as a black dos window thing (black square) and goes away.  It will continualy do this, it will update, but it won\'t play.  Whats up?
