General Discussion / Darkness
« on: November 07, 2005, 08:58:19 pm »
In another thread, I was told to do this to fix the darkness bug.

Go to the PS icon on your desktop. RIGHT click on it to bring up the window.

Click on Properties.

Look at the path. Add \" -fullbright to the path line. NOTE the space between the \" and -fullbright. Do not add the \", that is just the last thing on the path line.

Click Apply, and OK.

Start the game, and it will be fine.

You must redo this if the updater replaces the exe file for the game.

Planeshift doesn\'t have levels, so that would be something difficult to measure.

I am showing my ignorance of the game. I just started last week, and was not able to play much with the server outages.

Without levels, there would be no reliable way to do what I suggested, so I withdraw the idea as unworthy.

I still think the DR cannot be made too difficult without driving new players away.

I can see that making the board and the pieces visible, but to allow everyone in the room to see the game the pieces will have to be individually coded as objects moveable by the players. To avoid greifing, the objects would have to be locked to the players involved in the game, otherwise annoying types would move pieces in the middle of games (you KNOW they will). Having a window pop-up would allow that, I believe, easier than keeping the objects in the open.

I don\'t really know, I am not a programmer. But I made the suggestion and am not trying to make the developers job impossible.

Torture you say? Is it worst than a Model 347-T Interrogation Droid? I thought not.

I like this idea as well. It is not new, as Everquest has a Tetris style game called Gems, and when I played Might and Magic there was a card game you could play in taverns.

There was even a Quest involved in M&M with the card game, where you had to win a game in each tavern in the game. It made you visit every zone to find the taverns.

While haveing Chess, or my preference, Go, in the game, it would be  nightmare to code it as a board visible to everyone. Coding the pieces as individual objects would be a huge undertaking.

I think it would have to be almost like an instanced zone. The game board would take up the full screen of the players and observers alike.

I was trying to remap the RUN function key, ALT+T ( in my case, ALT+W as I remapped W as forward movement) and when I opened the options, selected RUN, and then when the box says to hit the key to remap to, I hit CAPS, and the game crashed. I tried this several times, with the same result.

On a side note, I had to wait for the server each time I did this. At first I thought the GM was resetting the server, but after the server being down EVERY time I did that remap, I guessed it was a glitch in my client.

General Discussion / DR
« on: November 07, 2005, 02:57:55 pm »
A few thoughts on the new DR.

The graphics and look are outstanding. I was just wandering around and staring at the place for half an hour.

The lighting must be consistant. If a light sourse is needed, it must be proviced IN the DR. A new player is proviced with no equipment, so a new player will have no means to buy or aquire a light sourse.

Fighting your way out is a bad idea. This makes the DR just another zone, and one that is unusually punishing to new players.

Riddles are another bad idea. Not everyone is good at riddles, and it is not a requirement for either RP, or to get thru life. In fact, if EVERYONE must be able to solve riddles, this will undermine Role Playing, as not every PC is all that intelligent.

The best idea I have seen so far is the one where you would respawn at a RANDOM location. This prevents someone using DR as a transporter, but does not make death a prohibitive event.

On the subject of death penalty.....   RPG games have consistantly moved away from Death penaltys for a simple reason. Excessive death penaltys drive new players away from the game. The many changes proposed by others on this thread will simply make many new players frustrated, and they will give up too soon. I propose a solution for new players. Leave the DR exit as it is for now (although I have not found it yet!) but make the DR progressively more difficult to exit as a character becomes higher in level. This way, newbies are not punished for being newbies and making typical newbie mistakes, but higher level chars cannot abuse the DR.

I logged out while in the Death Realm. Is this gonna be a problem when I update, or should I get my Character out of there before I update?

General Discussion / Consistancy
« on: November 04, 2005, 10:22:41 pm »
Although I am very new to the game and forum, I will venture to give an opinion here.

No one language is better than another, and I certainly don\'t advocate DISALLOWING all but one language, but I play MMORPG\'s not for the gear or money or the competition, I play the games to meet and do things with other people. I do not care if you are French, German, Turkish, or Chinese. I would in fact be more likely to spend time with you if you were, so I could get to know you.

What I fear about the use of multiple languages is that people will naturally segragate themselves by language. I WANT to converse and RP with people of other cultures and countrys, so I can learn, and grow, both as a character in the game, and as a person.

I will not be able to do that if someone is speaking a language I cannot understand.

I admire those of you whose native language is not English, as it is a difficult language. It IS however the most commonly used COMMON language today, and so the best for use in public forums.

Conversations in /say or /group are a non-issue, its the public conversations that I am talking about, and the  distance that will grow between people based on LANGUAGE that I worry about.

Newbie Help (Start Here) / Bit torrent
« on: November 04, 2005, 09:21:19 pm »
Bit torrent is the way to go, as said. The DMG file you got is for the Bit Torrent client to initiate the download stream. It is not an install file for the game.

If you look at the download page, the mirror sites will download the .exe install files to the game, if you don\'t want to use Bit Torrent.

Thank you, very much. I had read about the darkness issue, but missed that fix. Even if I am not fighing, it will be fun to explore.

I will get my chance, cuz I died falling off a hill just before I logged, and could not see a thing in the Death Realm. With this fix I should be able to see my way out, and then get to see the world from the \"ground up\" so to speak.

Again, thanks for the tip.

Newbie Help (Start Here) / Experience and Points Bug?
« on: November 04, 2005, 06:03:21 pm »
HI, I just downloaded the game yesterday and started playing. I have already gotten answers to a couple questions by reading the forums (\"darkness bug\") but still have one problem to present to you.

Once I made my way out of the starting city, I was experiencing the darkness bug and could not see anything, so could not travel. The only thing I could see was a six legged bug off to the left of the door.

I approached it and attacked, and killed it. In the chat box it said I had gotten 400 Experience and 2 Points.

However, in the STATS for my character, those did not change. It still showed me at 0% XP, and 0 points.

To test, I killed the bug 2 more times, and the same thing happened.

When I get home from work today, I will run the updater again (It ran 4 times after downloading the game, I ran it till it said everything was updated) just in case, but I was wondering if this is a known problem, and if I should just RP for now.

Thanks
