I\'m getting this as well all of the sudden.  I also cannot get onto the game itself, not even the pre-game character screen, without getting a crash 0000EEEFF type message.  I\'ll record the message if it\'s worth it.  Anyone else getting this?

You don\'t see alot of what you see in Planeshift anywhere else...

Sadly I suffer from some kind of bug where the game crashes on initialization  if I have audio on.  The only way I\'ve been able to get it to load is to disable the audio.

But to many of the role players point of view, you can still develop the history and motivation for your character that will live on beyond the wipe(s).  Your character will become part of the history of planeshift.  I\'m sure there is even a way to incorporate the wipe(s) into the story lines.

And the historians only record that which has past; we write the present and shape the future.

I think that\'s a good point.  I guess I have been a little frustrated by what I perceive as the limitations of what my role can possibly be when I\'m just standing in front of a respawn point and hacking away.   Maybe as I spend more time in the game I\'ll get into things more.

Final thought:  This is a role playing game.  You are supposed to interact with other players.  That is the intention.  I think that\'s why you start naked, broke, and unarmed - to force you to interact.  You are now an actor, acting out this character.  Do what your character would do.  Find your motivation and go with it.

I am all about role playing, I think it\'s fun, I just think it\'s very difficult, currently, in this game.  The writers of this game have obviously put a lot of energy and creativity into the background of the game world, and I think it\'s great work and very original, but the way the game is currently laid out, with all its bugs and potholes and so on, it is simply not immersive enough for me to really get into a role.   I encounter people who attempt to initiate some kind of role playing with me, but it is so dissociated from the actual game play, so fragmented and unrooted in the things around me, that I just can\'t get into it.   Also, since there is the threat of being wiped, I do NOT want to fall in love with my character.  :(

I actually did spend a lot of time killing rats.  After hours of killing rats I think I made a thousand tria or something.  All that becomes kind of silly when you meet someone who has made literally millions from a quest bug.

I have yet to see anyone role playing in this game.  I think it\'s pretty difficult to do so given the inchoate state of the game world.

Killing rats for hours on end will drive you insane, be polite and helpful and someone will give you some stuff.

I\'ve encountered some of these people.  One guy had 20,000,000 tria and he just handed me a few thousand for kicks.

I have worked pretty hard on my character, but I wouldn\'t mind if everything were suddenly wiped.  I know it\'s too early for there to be a microeconomy in the game, but it\'s kind of ridiculous how worthless money is.

I also trained my guy to level 9 axe without realizing that it\'s virtually impossible to find axes (one of the devs told me that).

Also I think creatures should spawn at random waypoints to stop Super Demi-god PC\'s from farming them.  It\'s impossible to roleplay around something like THAT.

And besides, nothing says you have to lug around rat tails, if you want to only loot rat hides, for instance.  It\'s your back after all, you decide what you want to put on it.

This is sort of... uh... yeah, nevermind.

So a kind soul gave me a bunch of stuff which allowed me to train a bit and get my character a little stronger.  I think I\'ll be able to take on some bigger things soon.

I still can\'t find any quests but I\'ll look harder.

Thanks for all the help!

Newbie Help (Start Here) / Rats, RATS, RAAAATTTSS
« on: January 25, 2006, 08:24:48 am »
So I am quite new here, I\'ve been playing for a few days and I\'ve killed about 3,000 rats.  I\'ve read the official FAQS and one of the supplementary FAQS, and have read a lot of posts on here before composing this little post.

First off, some good stuff:
I think this game is pretty amazing for an alpha test made by people from all over the world.  Really, I\'m impressed and I think it will only get better and better with time.

However, this game is really hard to get into for a new player.  I do ask a lot of people things and I\'m amazed and delighted at how helpful the community is here, but I really don\'t know what to do except kill rats.  I accepted a quest, but found that I needed 750 tria (the lamp oil quest) just to complete it.  750 tria, in laymen\'s terms, is about four million rat tails.  I really really wish there was some kind of initiation or set of things for new players to do that extended beyond rat killing.  Also I went to the tavern and nobody there offered me anything to do.

I enjoy this game, I would like to grow with it and learn more about it, but just a humble suggestion would be:  Help new players learn about the world with a initiation-style quest.    That\'s all.

I also wanted to volunteer to help with editing and writing.  If that sort of service is needed.  Thanks!
