Linux Specific Issues / Re: 0.3.015
« on: July 06, 2006, 12:25:35 am »
it runs smoothely for me though i had to redefine all my shortcut keys to match the shortcuts.xml file again ( the options from keys. xml and mouse.xml are NOT portable from previous versions !!! )

I do experience strange segvaults from time to time. But there IS a new psclient in the updater program it wont connect yet but i'm sure that after some other updates are fixed the correct version and an OFFICIAL release will be posted. For now as this is an UNOFFICIAL release for linux ( according to devs etc, ) its more then stable enough for me.

to the last question yes.

If you have strange errors with the file on trying to install it use
wget -c http://xrl.us/pslinux to download the rest of the file.
use
md5sum Pla*15* to check the md5sum

after installation go to www.psmirror.org and download the art.zip from the other dowload section of the page.
remove the art dir from the planeshift directory
extract the art dir from the zip in the planeshift directory

enjoy playing.

* sardit reads all the download times here and is thankfull for his own connection. :P its just under 5 minutes for me, but then, i bet you guys don't even pay near half as much as i do to my isp, and lines like this are the ONLY ones that my bandwith even begins to pay off.

It's a lot faster actually, i'm at 950 kb/sec and still climbing. There is plenty of bandwith your speed really only depends on your own ISP, will 15 be mirrored here aswell??

Perhaps its an idea to get this mirror on the download page aswell?

If the friggin referees hadn't been siding so much with the other teams then Holland would still be in... do you know how many friggin cards we got that weren't even fauls? Its not that strange that after the first cards the team finally decided that they ought to defend themselves against those murderous portugese !

lower the sensitivity and resolution, don't use it on heavy maps. eg, wait for the screen to load propperly before moving. If there is a lot of graphic stuff in the background it gets bugged up. Try setting adaptive camera, that will help with mouse look a lot aswell.

Harforth, i'm not at all one of those elitist players you describe and i don't have any trouble at all getting any of the information you referr to. All you need to do is interact with other players and they tell you. Maybe you should try roleplaying on of your questions instead of just bluntly asking OOC. Because if you only put in a little effort to phrase your question IC almost ALL the players that know the answer will help you. But shouting or asking in auction is generally ignored THAT is the thing that is not done in planeshift. Helping eachother out with quests or other things is done and you really don't have to belong to some inner circle of someone to get the answers.

General Discussion / Re: looking for silverweave daggers
« on: June 22, 2006, 01:18:19 pm »
i THOUGTH that this was a similar thing. I was not affected by weakness spells, i lent them to a guild member that was in my guild for a couple of weeks. the minute he got them he fought a dwarf and ran away, he then left the guild logged off. He logged on for a minute about half an hour later and then vanished from my buddy list and everyone elses. I think he traded the daggers to an alt and then deleted his character.

It was dumb to lend out weapons but it is something that everyone does especially if you think you can trust a player. The time i was talking in irc was when this character did still excist. I contacted kerol in game and he could do nothing for me but suggested i go on irc since there was a GM5 command that could get my daggers back. He there discussed this matter with other gm's. He thought it was an ooc offence no matter how it took place. DaveG disagreed and thought it was a stupid thing for me to do. In his opinion it was an rp event where i was conned into it and should solve it in an rp.

I planned to do exactely that but as the character was offline immediately i didn't get a chance at first. However the character deleted and left me with no chance to get daggers back. So i started looking for replacements by looting rogues and trying to buy one, but since none were for sale i thought i'd try in this forum. If there had been a trade forum i would have posted there.

This thread was in no way intended to involve GM's in it. Or getting my daggers back through them. That is why i posted the whole post scriptum in the first place.
The role of GM's was clearified to me on irc and the whole difference between the two situations explained. Ofcourse i was disapointed mainly because i don't see the bug exploit in the weakness spell as its clearly an effect that can be derived from the guide and the spell description itself. However as that is labeled a bug it allows for gm intervention and as this was a screwed up thing from one player to another that had nothing to do with bug exploits there was no reason to interfere at all. That point was made and aside from my disapointement in that position i can only agree on it. Logically it is completely true and i don't dispute that point of view.

The auction should have been the way to go but as that did not work due to the small range and some players getting annoyed by seeing the same buy request comming by every 10 minutes i tried something else. I was not aware of any rules against this board being used as a marketplace since i have seen other threads doing so aswell.

As stated above i was not clear on the exact role of GM's at the time i requested this, especially since not all gm's see there role the same as the others do. The whole difference between those two matters was that one was a bug exploit. And though clearly an OOC theft the other was within game rules. Since alts that trade with eachother ar by default from other email adresses and alt list cant be generated and the only way to find that character would be through ip logs. I knew the minute he deleted that i would not get my daggers back as there is no way for a gm to even find them. Hence i looked for a replacement set.

Again this thread was in no way intended to discuss the role of a GM. It wasn't intended to push them into doing anything at all either. The whole post scriptum was there because i recieved tells suggesting to go to the GM's on this matter. And since they can't do anything because nothing here was illegal / exploiting bugs or anything i placed a note that those suggestions were useless.

( ps the game masters will not help me get them back as to their opinion the theft was fair within game mechanics. I obviousely do not agree on that, but a discussion on it is useless as they pointed out and any ideas regarding them in helping me get them back aswell so suggesting them in a solution to this is not needed or usefull )

Q 1 : As DaveG explained to me on irc i misinterpreted the role of Gm's. I'm was not asking GM's to give back my daggers in this thread, i asked if anyone could sell me some. My misinterpretation resulted from the fact that taking a players inventory after he drops them due to the weakness spell isn't allowed because that is considered stealing. He explained that this is only so as that apperently is using a bug to take items. Further more my intention in asking them in the first place was to use them as a mediator in this matter. And as also seen in this post they don't see their role in the game as such. Obviousely these things were not clear to me at that time and my contacting them was on suggestion of others aswell as my idea so i'm not the only dumb idiot around here thank you.

Q 2 : Since i was contacted ingame and now have replacements it clearly worked to ask around in the forums. Its pretty hard to contact every single player in game and i figured this was quicker. The result proves this.

I really wasn't trying to restart that discussion, i only hoped to contact someone that would sell me Silverweave Daggers, and as there was no trade forum i thought this was the best place for it. The post scriptum thing was only there to avoid having to explain to everyone why gm's couldn't give me the daggers back. I got 4 tells suggesting that very quick after that post.

edited to add

I have found two replacements thanks to a kind player. So please regard this thread as closed.

regarding the first edit ( ooc )

Alarice logged off and deleted his character after he gave my daggers to an unknown alt. It pisses me of greatly but at least its possible to implement this in my Roleplay.

Since my own daggers were stolen by some unkind player who logged off and deleted in minutes after his act i am looking for two replacements.

3 Edited to remove a bit about the stolen daggers. There is no point in continueing this.

edit 2 ( no need for replacements any more, thanks for reading this )

General Discussion / Re: The DR (for RPers only)
« on: June 22, 2006, 10:15:34 am »
If i'm not mistaken there is a bit in the settings / future developement part of the site stating that "Powerfull wizzards are capable of entering and leaving the death realm without actually dying"

To me that clearly states that the Deathrealm is an other world ( like roman mythology, where some dude walks into the deathrealm to get his beloved back, and is allowed to do so if he can leave it without looking back once. He gets out but at the entrance looks back and loses her forever.

The idea that you can return from the death is not very uncommon, in PS its just a fact aswell. If players would simply stop making jokes about it. Taking revenge on others soon after death or using it as a shortcut there really isn't a problem with it. I don't think that the mechanics of the DR need to change in order to achieve this. Simply look at all the players posting here, if we all roleplay the deathrealm a bit more seriousely and show the new players how to do so aswell the problem is solved

Something like this would solve the problem of an accidental encounter after a death.

Char 1 : Soo you're back from the death again? Care to take another journey there?

Edit : // does this make sence at all?
Char 2 : Please no ser, i still have the shivers of the dreaded place,  If you don't mind i'll just be on my way enjoying the blissfull light of the azure sun on my body again. My bones are still cold from that cold and murky place.
Char 1 : So you've learned your lesson then? You finally see killing dwarves is a crime and will leave them alone
Char 2 : I can't promiss that, but for now i will consider the ordeal i put them through.
Char 2 grins " though i do like the pain and sorrow it might cause them "
Char 1 : Be gone fool, before i slay you again !
Char 2 bows politely, " by your leave ser "

If both players simply gloss over the short amount of time that goes between it then it doesn't ruin the atmosphere at all. You could always state as a character that the amount of time you spent there felt like years, the dust in your mouth, lack of water and sun and all. Who is to say how long YOU experienced your time there? It could be very plausible that time moves around diffentely in both realms. Just as long as a player doesn't mess it up deliberately you can always roleplay a fix to a situation. As soon as you go barging in on players completely ignoring the whole deathrealm though, then you're ruining the whole game for others.

I didn't vote for the octarchs, lets over throw them and begin a revolution :P

Come on, if we take the setting literally then a lot of stuff that anyone does isn't right. Remember that whole deal with the mouth? it isn't realistic then as there is nothing in the setting that says that it plays the role we gave it.

lol, nice, you do know that the roman empire excisted around the time that christianity was invented? Remember the "Priests" that sent Jesus to the cross, they were roman priests :P

I think the emperor after Ceasar was the one that did that, i'm pretty sure that Ceasar wasnt the one. Though he has a series of letters concerning christians with some other fellow, can't remember  who, but they were part of my final examn and Ceasar was our main author for my finals.
