Got it thanks to others who had different problems. :)

The zoneinfo.xml in cvs is bad.  Replace with a good ane to fix this issue.

Now I have a problem with inventory.  I tried to weild a weapon and all three attempts caused a seg fault.

It builds with the exception of one plugin.
The updater runs but cannot find a version file.
The client runs but crashes on zone load.

here is the output:

General Discussion / Re: i want energy glyph
« on: June 07, 2006, 01:55:49 am »
First of all, allow me to explain that Planeshift is not by any means my fir MMO.  In fatc I have surely been playing computer games longer than most who now play have been alive.

That said:

Not everyone likes the same thing in games.  That is why in a MMO you deversify allot.  Fighting, questing, crafting, etc.

This is the first MMO that I have been in contact where so much opportunity for creation and story telling exitst.  Don't like the backstory so far?  get involved with the developers and help move it in a better direction.  That is a very GOOD thing.

On the other side of the coin, we have the absolute worst elitest attitude in any game, ever.  And that is a very BAD thing.

Want to start a quest but don't have a clue?  Too bad.  You will never even get started unless someone helps you, and noone will.  Its just not done here.  Only those who wrote and implemented the puzzles (and their friends) are able to solve them.

It is possible, and quite likely, that a player can wander the world for literally months, apeaking to every NPC and never devine a clue as to how a certain quest is started, let alone finished.

Some folks find this attractive because so few are able to penetrate the real mysteries of the game.  Very few players ever recieve the 'rewards' that can be had.  Although that is how it should be, it should be a result of skill, advancement, guild, etc. and not simply hoarded knowledge.  Its dissapointing.

Lots of examples exist besides the energy glyph.  Here is another one.

Can fire be trained beyond 20?  Good luck.  Only another 'knowledable' player can help you.  It cannot be determined by brute force, determination, or in game semantics.  It is simply a 'secret' that is not shared.  Again, dissapointing.

That should be enough to illustrate the point.

Sour grapes?  Sure.  I don't want to be an elitest in order to continue to advance in game.  I have maxed swords, all physical stats (as far as can be determined in game) and fire to 20.  Now days game play for me is standing around the common areas trying to catch an interestinf dialog.

Errors so far:

solved by:

ln -s `pwd`/CS/include/igeom/objmodel.h `pwd`/CS/include/cstool

--

src/client/psclientdr.h:59: error: extra qualification ‘psClientDR::’ on member ‘HandleDeath’

line 59 reads:

no solution :(

Linux Specific Issues / Re: Sound Problem
« on: April 29, 2006, 06:09:03 am »
I solved part of my problem.  I have good sound now.

rm /usr/local/games/planeshift/libs/libasound.so.2
rm /usr/local/games/planeshift/libs/libasound.so.2.0.0

Let the game use the system versions.

EDIT:

After a few hours of testing:

1.  Still lots of random seg faults preceded by hundreds of lines like -- hit!beam!
2.  Twice, the sounds just seemed to stop after a while, but this is unclear because both times as soon as I noticed that sounds weren't playing, I got a seg fault. :(

I would like to build the source with globals left in and run it under a code analyzer to see if there is a consistant point of failure, but I need to do some kernel testing (issues with multicasts over wifi) and so I cannot downgrade enough stuff to get planeshift to build.
I did run some straces against it, but the results are inconclusive:
Everything looks normal and then:

[pid  2730] gettimeofday({1146186829, 581948}, NULL) = 0
[pid  2730] gettimeofday({1146186829, 581984}, NULL) = 0
[pid  2730] gettimeofday({1146186829, 582024}, NULL) = 0
[pid  2730] --- SIGSEGV (Segmentation fault) @ 0 (0) ---
[pid  2732] <... futex resumed> )       = -1 EINTR (Interrupted system call)
[pid  2738] <... select resumed> )      = ? ERESTARTNOHAND (To be restarted)
[pid  2732] +++ killed by SIGSEGV +++
Process 2732 detached
[pid  2738] +++ killed by SIGSEGV +++
Process 2738 detached
Process 2730 detached

Not a clue as to where it failed. :(

2.6.16-1.2080_FC5

Game seg faults on start up with OSS enabled.
Game fails to load alsa with:
NOTIFY: Configured for driver [crystalspace.sndsys.software.driver.alsa]
ALSA lib pcm.c:1939:(snd_pcm_open_conf) Cannot open shared library /usr/lib/alsa-lib/libasound_module_pcm_softvol.so

Running with alsa on or sound off produces the same result:
Random seg faults.  From seconds into game, to an hour.  VERY annoying.

Sound off does help a ton!  However, over about two hours of play, it did grow from 300 to 600MB in size.

Linux Specific Issues / Serious Memory Leaks In Dungeon zone
« on: March 04, 2006, 08:27:22 am »
Not every zone exhibits the serious memory leak, but the dungeon area on the coliseum sure does.  I have been wondering about it for a few days, and finally tested it tonight.

Running top, I can watch the: VIRT and RES
climb steadily up by as much as 5 MB every 5 second interval (top update).

When psc reaches about 950MB RES size, my system starts to SWAP, of course, and becomes unusable.  I have 1GB RAM.

If I keep top open in another window, and exit the game any time psc reaches 800MB or so, I can go all night with no difficulties.

I spent about an hour in Hades, with no appearent growth in psc RES.  That clearly indicates a zone tuning issue.

Hope this helps others!
