Complaint Department / Re: The Winch -- What are they thinking?
« on: February 14, 2007, 01:15:16 am »
If anyone would like to make a Wishlist thread on "My Perfect Quest System," please feel free to. It will help out the development team a lot more than the current "This just doesn't work" pattern :] Remember, suggestions make complaints sound a lot better.

Well I would love too, but I don't have the slightest clue on how quest systems work in games.  However, I will post some suggestions that I can:

The quests should not restart for npcs that have more than one quest.  After the time had passed when you can get them again you should have to ask for that certain one again.  Another idea for this is that for npcs who have more than one quest you should be required to finish them all before any of them restarts.  These are just some ideas.  The main point is they should make it simplier to get quests you haven't done.

The npcs should give us a better explaination of why we can't do the quest.  If we say something that doesn't make sense they should tell us.  If enough time hasn't elapsed they should tell us soemthing to that effect.  It is frustrating to not know the exact reason why it is not working.

It would be nice if the quests didn't become bugged.  I have no clue why they do or I would be trying something different.  This game is a work in progress so we must deal with the bugs.  However, this is something that does need fixed sometime down the road for the quests to work smoothly.

There needs to be a lot of work with talking to the npcs.  Like I stated I don't know anything about how hard this is or what it requires.  A system to where the npc says something and than you use his words to continue the conversation would work.  Example:  You can find Harnquist in Hydlaa.  Than you say Where is Hydlaa?
There are many different systems that would work, this is just one expample.  All I know is that the current system for the most part is a complete guess and not being able to say regular phrases to them does make it hard.

I'm having the same problem as you Proteous.  Getting a bugged quest makes you mad enough but than not being able to get it back is even worse.  The quests for the most part are interesting and I love doing them.  However, they can drive you crazy with all the bugs and overall the quest system just does not work.  I haven't been able to tell any pattern in the amount of time that it takes you to attain the quest again.  It seems like it is completely random, but I could be wrong.  I just try to make a trip back to the npcs each day and see if I can get it back.

I don't know how long it will be until I can finally do the Winch quest.  The funny thing is the npc that gives that quest made me do his other quests, which I had already done earlier.  It required me to do them over again because it had been so long since I had completed them.  Sure enough his other quest became bugged.  Now I am left to waiting until I can restart his first quests.  These quests are a great thing to do but unless the system to do them becomes less flawed I will have to take a break from them.

Welcome to Planeshift!

I play with windows and have a similar computer to yours.  I even play with a higher resolution, but I haven't had any problems at all.  Perhaps it is because before I was used to playing with a computer that couldn't handle the majority of games.  Well if you are having problems with the map loads you might want to change that in the setup.  If you loads all the maps at once it uses a lot more ram.  I also have 1gb and it works fine if I do load all of the maps at once.

Wish list / Re: Smaller places of interest between the large cities.

Well I live in a place where we have mountains all around us.  You can grow just about anything you wish without tending to it any.  Now finding the land to grow on can be difficult.  Plants will grow in many different terrians and places.  My point is though if all the land was used as farmland it would be boring out there.  I mean ofcourse you will have your cities that will have a variation but if all the wilderness was farmland there would be little variation out there.  There should still be some wild areas where you wouldn't dare to plant, some areas where plants are quite hard to grow (like volcanoes, desert, etc.), and also other areas like the ruins implemented.  That is just my opinion though.  If you create all this great terrian and variations and plant nothing but crops on it, I could see it becoming boring out there.

Well not a huge number compared to some games but nevertheless a good number for planeshift.  That's a good start considering this game will only get better as time goes on.

Well if there was nothing but farmland out there, while it might be accurate of the story, I think it would be just as boring as the barren land.  We definitley need a variety of terrians.

As you start collecting more money you will find that this is not a problem.  I am sure for the time being someone will be nice enough to exchange with you.

Well I don't know about this Tribe system but I do agree we need more points of interest between the major cities.  Even simple places like the ruins add some interest.  I would definitley like to see some more objects and etc. placed around out in the wilderness.  I do agree that certain places should be to dangerous for anything.  However, to give it a more interesting feel they could add different terrians, exotic plants, pits, and etc.  In the less dangerous places you could add places like the ruins or perhaps even buried civilizations and etc.  Hopefully down the road it will be much more dangerous and exciting out there.

A good idea and I hope you have a prosperous business.  I collect a few things these days unfortuntley weapons are not one of them.  Nevertheless perhaps down the road we can do business together.  I might drop by sometime and see how your business is going.

Yes, a good example indeed.  One of the many you can find.

For me personally I think of Yliakum as a place that can't be compared to anything in the real world at all.  I don't think we are in a time period but rather a whole different world.  There are things in Yliakum that aren't possible in this world as we know it and perhaps there are more advancements than we even know.  In the other case perhaps the world is even less advanced than what we think.  Either way, it is a unique place.

Calm down, take your loss, and find a great character name that everyone can appreciate.  There are certain standars that should be in place and names are important to create a good roleplaying world.

I miss the discovery the most when you are a new player.  I can remember finding the sewers and getting lost deep down in them many times.  Than finally realizing how to get down into the dungeon and finally mastering the way down into it.  Ofcourse the first trip to Oja was awesome also.  Finally finding the "other city" and ended up doing a weeks worth of quests there.  Than finally when the Bronze Doors came out it took me a month to get the new directions down.  The good thing about it is you still have new discoveries whenever they implement a new area, new quests, etc.

Joining a guild would be a great idea.  I remember when I first began a long time ago I quit the game after only a week or two.  Well one day about a year later I decided I would give the game a try again.  Luckily for me that time I might a helpful fellow by the name of Janner.  Before long I was a member of Janners Way.  Like stated unfortuntley this guild no longer exsist.  It was a great guild for beginners, but I am sure there are other active guilds that will fulfill your needs.

Yes you are correct, some Janners Way members are going to try and get a guild going again.  So far only Svuun, Learch, and me (dmiles).  However, we are going in a different direction than the old Janners Way.  Unfortuntley none of us have the time nowdays so it could be a long process getting another guild together.

It's unfortunate that Janners Way will not be continuing from this point on.  Part of the end is my fault.  I was rarely on Planeshift for quite a while, and I can understand it isn't very fun being in a guild all on your own.  I guess the other members all lost interest or was too busy to play also.  Hopefully we can all remember the good times we had together as members of Janners Way.
