General Discussion / Re: In PS, there are no [________]...

This is one of the things that I really hate about PS. There is a whole long list of stuff thats not supposed to be in the game world, but the world desciption and history are generic enough that when you are a new player you really have no idea that its not supposed to be there, even if you have read the background to the game world. Then you have the constant argument and bickering abut it and whether a person can rp this or create a guild about that, Its rather tedius and very discouraging to new players. Its also boring. Who wants to exist in some imaginary utopia where everyone gets along? If your going to enforce whether or not this stuff exists Talad and whatever other brains behind the project that make the decisions need to sit down and come up with a definative list of what does and does not exist in PS. Oh, and another thing that would help role play is a more comprehensive world sourcebook, think PnP rpg style like the Forgotten Realms campaign setting  for D&D 3rd edition by WotC etc.

You're supposed to roleplay while you do quests and while you craft things.  It's called "being in character".  That's what roleplaying is.

AMEN!!!

He's saying it a different way than others have in the past.  Plus it's Sangwa who's saying it, and that counts for something.  As far as the target audience, I would say personally that those who would benefit from reading his post are those who feel that they're "tolerating" roleplayers, when really it's the roleplayers who are tolerating disruptive players.  I think we're too tolerant of disruptive behaviours, to be honest, and I think we're under no obligation to tolerate it from players who should know better.

This is why I gave up on RP in PS and have given up on PS. It seems to me to be an utter waste of time to RP when 3/4 of the people around you are talking about the latest cold play album or jumping around like drunk garden gnomes. What ever happened to enforcing RP on PS? There is far far too much tolerance of people who either don't know or donlt care what RP is. Kick them off, PS will be better off whithout them in the long run and there are plenty of free hack and slash powergaming mmorpg's for them to go to.

NWN stands for Neverwinter Nights. It is based on Dungeon and Dragons 3.0. It first appeared in 2002 as a single player rpg but has morphed into a server based multiplier game with hundreds of different servers featuring Forgotten Relams, Dragonlance, Middle Earth, Planescape, Tamriel, Dark Sun and other player created worlds such as Layonara wich are quite good. The fact that its not an mmorpg gives it a clear advantage over PS in that respect. The rp in PS is good for an mmorpg, but its still not as good as I'd like to see it. The really bing rp issue I have with PS is OOC chat on the main channel and Metagaming (for example reading someones name floatiung above their head and then addressing them with it even though you have never met them). I'm glad to see that events are starting to take shape in PS, but I have the feeling that the devs and dm's will not be willing to relinquish enough of their control of the game to make them non-linear and unpredicatable in nature. The most constructive feedback I can give though is devs need to work as hard as they can to create random spawns (perhpas both type and location) and new more seemless combat animations.

And by the community dying I did not mean the number of players, I met the number of older players leaving for greener pastures as they have become fed up with the way things are done on PS. The best example that I can think of is Ganinos "longbeard." Dragon High Master of the Dragon Council, representative of Scoy and AWOL now since last october because of various issues including the departure of Bodacher which is another issue. I can name others who have quit as well, and so I think can all of you.  Community is what makes the game. PS can have every bell and whistle in the mmorpg handbook, but if you do not have players devoted to rp and bug testing where does that leave you?

I played this game for six  months straight before getting bored. I had already tried the free Korean mmorpg's and hated them, nor did I went to try WoW, Guild wars or EverQuest because all they are is going out and killing stuff, how boring. I decided to go out and purchase NWN for $15 u.s. That has got to be the best single purchse I have ever made. I thought the RP here was good to, until I logged into some of the RP servers on Gamespy. You AVERAGE rp server in NWN blows anything I have ever seen in PS away as far as RP goes.. hands down. On top of that, for the most part the community is even better as well. The icing on the cake is DM run events.. these drive rp in a somewhat focused direction. They drive a storyline that encompases the characters, the guilds, and the entire world. If PS had this then I think we would be much better off. I realize the fundamental difference is NWN not technically being a mmorpg in the sense PS is.. and the fact that Ps is an alpha stage demo done as a hobby by the devs... but it just seems to me that with the small number of things to do and the community at large PS is.. well... boring. Perhaps that is why the community is dying? Or perhpas its the lack of respect for players that have been around since the beginning. Or perhaps its because of the guilds like the D.C. that have been around for a long time now seeing all of their hard work and hours and hours of game time wiped because some noob can't resist exploiting a bug?

Technical Help: IN GAME bugs (after loading world) / Re: Runtime error!
« on: August 22, 2006, 03:54:21 pm »
I get this error message every time I exit from planeshift. After several times of this I get a warning message when I try loading my character that my PS client can't find the helpgrb.dll file or some such and them immediatly crashes. I have to log off my profile, and re-log back on. This process takes waaaaay longer then it usually does when I get an error like this. I think all the PS client crashes are effecting my system performance. Any suggestions? This has been a problem since .15 was released.

I am having this same error. I get a run time error everytime I exit and/or crash out of PS. Then when I try to log back onot PS my client crashes becasue it can not find this help.glb file or some such. Then I have to log off or restart the computer and it takes FOREVER..I'm talking like 5-10 minutes. I have also noticed that this seems to be affecting my computers overall system performance. All the crashes etc. are causing windows to be ever quirkier than usual. How do you fix this problem?

8
Ok, was taken out of the DR by Magodra, but still having run time errors either on log in or within 30sec-2min of logging in. I can't even play the game on ANY of my characters.

9
Ok, I can log in with another character, but the problem I have is that when I try to log on with Kesrith in the Dr the crashes grow closer and closer together until I can't even load an area before I've crashed. Then it tells me I'm missing a DLL file and the game crashed before it even loads completely. I've had to re-install PS now like four times, and I'm about to do it again. Very nast nasty error.

10
I too am stuck in the DR. Run-time errors every couple of seconds to a couple of minutes. Sometimes I don't even get the area loaded before I've crashed. Had lotsa crashes on Oja road trying to get bach to Hydlaa city so /die myself. Not sure what to do. Playing is an exercise in futility right now.

Since this is a role playing event you are describing, then it is no more perposterous for you in-game character to "listen" to music being described in written form then it is to sing the song. It requires imagination, which as the heart of all role-playing, be it pnp or Planeshift. I love to rp, but haven't done it much in game yet because I am so focused on improving my character right now. In a way thats rp to, because ic I am very focused, ambitious and driven to single objective. As Zan says though... if you can't fine people who want to RP, bring the RP to them. This community, with all its flaws, is still MUCH fore RP oriented then other games.

The animation is good... don't get me wrong... but I don't like the style. To Anime for my tastes. I picture a PS comic as a bit darker with a more realistic style.

General Discussion / Re: RPing: A small request to people who duel.
« on: May 24, 2006, 02:24:55 am »
I'd like to move this topic back to its original intention... The problem that I've seen lately is people dueling at the DR spawn point for "training." Not only is this ooc but its also extremely disruptive and very annoying. Your dead already... whats the point in dueling? It comes down to some macho testosterone fest... and if you really need to prove how tough you are you can always take an ulber by yourself.

Yep, exactly what happened to me, Death realm was so Dark I couldn't see my hand in front of my face, and the sewers were so dark I was pretty much confined to killing rats at the enterence. Then one day... presto I could see! Very strange, but VERY welcome.
