Wish list / Re: Some suggestions
« on: August 03, 2006, 02:15:30 pm »
Hi again,

Thank you Kerol for your answer.
Sorry Karyuu for the eventual double-posts. I think, as a "tester", I have to give some feedback, even if it's already done : that could help devs to know which issue is really blocking, and which one only anoy a few people.

So, Kerol, here are my completitions :
- For the "description" problem. Right now, you have to be beside a character to see its description. If you are like 10 meters, you can't get a context menu. I think trading or speaking with a NPC when you are 10 meters far is impossible, so it's normal we can use these functions. But looking at a NPC, and know if it's stronger then us or not (/consider command on any MUD) should be usable when you are like 10 meters from a character. I mean... I don't have to be beside an ogre to know he is stronger then me. But as ingame, rats are enormous by exemple, it's hard to know "by instinct" if a NPC is stronger or not. When beside, most of them will attack you, so you can't use the description option. And most NPC that doesn't attack you are weak, so description isn't really usefull : most of the time, if a NPC won't attack you, then you can kill it. I think "right click" should be available when 10 meters far from the target, but with only the "description" button. That's realistic, and avoid noobs to die each time they see a "new" NPC.
- For the signs, I mean in cities, there should be some panels to say where are the gates, and may be some important places (market places, church, etc.). Also, outside the cities, at crossways, it's normal to find a panel that says where each path go. That won't kill the fact we can be lost, but that would help people finding their path when they know where they want to go.

You can read a description if you are farther away than 10m. First select the target, the type /targetinfo. The description box will then show up. Also, figuring out how strong the NPC is has to do with your charisma stat.

In-Game Roleplay Events / Re: The Trader of Rat Skin
« on: August 03, 2006, 02:02:56 pm »
I agree with Zhai, be a trader of all hides. Of course, the sellers of hides would have to sacrifice a tria or two for getting lower prices than what's offered in Ojaveda, but it shouldn't be too bad.

no, I made sure the weapons were repaired before I went hunting.

Could you attack anything? I was having some problems with the Oja rats, basically the same as yours, but when it came to attacking my attacks barely worked, even with bloody stance. In the end magic killed a rat, but it was tiring.

Hmm...

I did some exploring and found two items of interest...

Here is a screenie of one of them:

There are signposts, but we can't read them. I'd really love to know what it says, but I haven't seen a Yliaki - English dictionary/alphabet translator yet...

General Discussion / Re: Bronze Doors Area
« on: July 27, 2006, 04:31:00 pm »
I can't wait for more NPCs to be implemented in the Bronze Doors region. At the moment it feels like a deserted tourist area, with flickering lamps and new wooden fencing, but NO PEOPLE! The castle/fortress itself is wonderful playground to go exploring, but I wish the current NPCs there could tell me more about the place.

And here I was, thinking we got holographic grass foil in a medieval fantasy world.   :-[
Nevertheless, it looks cool, especially when walking right through it.

just finished downloading, and I'm keeping Azureus on for seeding. My upload rate varies a lot though, from 1 byte to 30 kps.

New content is awesome, except that I'm lost already, and got kicked off the server.

General Discussion / Re: Whats the best part of the PS game for you??
« on: July 02, 2006, 10:25:46 pm »
Storytelling. I like how there is a long history of Yliakum, and every character is supposed to have his/her own story. I love reading, and spend lots of time just reading character descriptions for fun.

Alot of guilds are entirely:
We protect the weak and good. We smite evil. We are heroes.

I completely agree with this summary. I can count at least 5 guilds that follow those three sentences, and another 5 that are "evil." What's really missing in the world of guilds in Yliakum is what originally made up medieval guilds in RL - crafts and merchants. We need guilds of mages, blacksmiths, healers, hide merchants, weapons merchants, etc. Those by default would need a background story to function and are deeply involved with RP on a daily basis.

General Discussion / Re: If your character was wiped...
« on: July 02, 2006, 09:27:04 pm »
Mass amnesia? Easy RP way out... everyone got sick and forgets who they were!

If someone else takes the name "Astraea" before I re-create her, I have lots of back-up names to use. If it's not taken, I'll probably recreate her, completely. A wipe wouldn't affect her history, because like everyone else IC, there is nothing that she knows before the wipe.

What I would really like to see if there is a wipe is a list of character names before and after-wipe. It's more useful than a "reserve name" list. I've seen it done for a forum, and it proved extremely helpful in getting in touch with old contacts.

General Discussion / Re: Is it worth playing this game?
« on: July 02, 2006, 09:18:09 pm »
(I'm going to play partial devil's advocate here. But personally I love PlaneShift, and have no complaints about it except that I live in the wrong timezone to interact with more people.)

There are some things that could immediately be a turnoff.

1. The game isn't even at version 1.xxx yet. It's in alpha, pre-alpha? It means that players are testers, and there will be bugs to deal with constantly. One could find the error message that pops up after quitting the game overly annoying.

2. The dedication to RP. Some people don't know what RP is, and get bashed right away for asking for help. Roleplaying can be a hard task if you're not a writer, or self confident enough to create full character with a family history and personality.

3. Unfinished models. You can't fully customize your character, because many races either don't have models, or else only have one gender's.

4. Constant updates that interrupt gameplay. Example: right now. Someone in another thread stated that PS was losing new players because of this update and failure to inform everyone on the downloads page.

5. Too many guilds with the same purpose.

(Meh. I'm really pushing what I don't like about PS. Most of the stuff I listed is easily avoidable/curable. Of course it's worth the download and wait to play.)

That's soon going to change in a month to GMT - 4.

Lovely 12 hour change.

New version :)

I don't care if just one pond was added, as long as an update means more fun in Yliakum.

General Discussion / Re: Mining... The quick way to get Tria!
« on: June 27, 2006, 04:41:47 pm »
I think he meant ban healing potions as in boycotting them. Since NPCs sell healing potions, it's really no use boycotting potions. Personally, I prefer food. It's cheaper and easier to find.
{EDIT} Ah, never mind about that previous paragraph.{/EDIT}

And back to the original topic, mining is an easy way to gain xp and trias in a relatively short time. But the calculations are off. Last I checked, it was 240 trias per gold ore, and it does not take 5 seconds to get one. Even if you do know where the special spots are, eventually your mental stamina will run out, and you'll have to wait until that's back to 100% to start all over again. Maybe with a fast computer mining does take 5 seconds to get the result from "you start digging" to "you were not successful" or "you ahve found gold ore," but with mine it takes at least 15 seconds. Then there's the problem of hauling it to either Hydlaa or Ojaveda to sell (and train skills related to mining), which I think takes longer than usually because your endurance is lower since ore is heavy. (Not sure on this one, will have to check in future.) Also, I find that if two people are mining in the same special spot where there is ore, the chances of finding gold ore goes down. One last thing that's not so good about constantly mining: it's the equivalent of powerleveling.
