General Discussion / Re: The DR (for RPers only)

Hmm. I take your point, but am not sure I quite agree. But then as someone playing an amnesiac character, I've really enjoyed listening to all the RPed theories about what the Death Realm is, and why we go there, and why other creatures and people don't. And while my character now knows a possible way out, she's been given so many theories about why it may or may not be a stable thing, a random thing, or even a second chance arbitrarily given by the grumpy bloke in the library (!) that she's got just as good a set of reasons to take care not to die as if the Death Realm was longer and more arduous to get out of. I think my in game conclusion is currently "This whole place is weird", more or less!

I think regardless of the state of the game vis a vis the settings, players are going to find RP reasons for the mechanics. I'm not sure you can police that, TBH.

I agree. I'll happily help if I'm in the death realm and know someone needs help. Keep asking in game for help and someone will take pity on you. I suggest hanging out near the spawn point and asking for help as people come through.

I found the Death Realm stupidly dark. Switched to fullbright for one go (search the forums for how to do this) and it was much clearer for me. Now I can wander around in blackness *and* get out - I just have to take things slowly. I rationalised this as crawling blindly about in game - after all, I wouldn't knowingly throw myself off a cliff!

Meh.  I find that people who RP "good" characters are far more prone to OOC harassment than any of the players with evil characters as their main.  What it comes down to is common sense and decency.

Personally, I've found players in Planeshift lovely so far. I do agree a modicum of common sense is needed - I mean, if a player has RPed with that particular character (or know the character is RPed by a player who knows your character) X million times before, then if they're being a git IC it probably doesn't need an OOC explanation. But if they're RPing with a character who is more of an unknown factor, I don't think it hurts to make it clear any gitty behaviour is IC. And that's true regardless of what "alignment" they're playing, IMHO. (i don't like alignments but that's a rant for another time)

I guess one way round it if players don't want to be bothered by doing tells is to have a little OOC disclaimer in the description (and indeed putting some effort into the description - I saw a fab evil old hag lady dwarf description in game the other day, and it really helped the way I interacted with that character). But in my mind, if players are wanting to engage with another character in RP to enhance their enjoyment of the game, and therefore want them to put time and effort into enhancing their experience, a little aside to check the other players are cool and not upset OOC isn't too much to ask. Certainly it's what I'd do if tabletopping or LARPing, and while this is the first MMORPG I've played I haven't seen that the RP conventions are that different here so far.

Nice thread :)

Playing evil generally isn't my thing, but I think if I were trying to do this in Planeshift I'd work the fact that dead men and women (and Kran :) ) can and do tell tales here, due to the Death Realm not being a permanent state. Evil is doing what you can get away with, not being stupid. Homicidal maniacs generally don't last long in any society unless they are good at covering their tracks :) Perhaps it can be rationalised that yon city guards are *very* efficient?

I've seen some nice evil RP in the game, including someone insulting and challenging someone they must have known they couldn't beat. That was fun to get involved in, even only peripherally.

I'm not personally that attracted by the PvP side, so from a layperson's perspective the virtual good and evil guilds seems like a good idea to separate out those that are interested in this kind of interaction from those that aren't. Personally, I don't mind someone coming and trying to mug me (for example), provided it's well roleplayed out. I will make them RP their butt off for my horrible stinky newbie rat hides though :)

As for an OOC aside to say it's just RP, that's just good manners to me. Why risk upsetting people OOC when you don't have to?

*grins*

I'll have to be able to kill other things than rats by then :) I am the mighty rat slayer, oh yes...

Thanks peeps - I've been away with real life and have exams to revise for for the next week or so, but hope to see you in game in the near future!

The Hydlaa Plaza / Re: Myspace drama, Planeshift style!

(I don't use mySpace, but I do use Livejournal. My understanding is that they aren't that dissimilar, but take that into account when reading my comment below)

That's interesting, because I use a connected blog website a lot, and genuinely feel I've gained a lot from it. True, there are a lot of journals out there that I personally wouldn't take the time to read, but there are some beautifully written and very witty journals out there too. I've added people to my must read list purely for their writing. I've also interacted with people who I'd never have met offline, because they don't live close to me, or they move in very different circles, and found I've learnt a lot from their alternate viewpoints. My online social group is a much more diverse group of people than I see day to day, and I like it that way. I've also found keeping a blog to be an excellent way of keeping in touch with people. I moved from the UK to Japan last year, and it's definitely helped me stay in touch with my friends in the UK in a more meaningful way than if I was relying on emails and phone calls.

I agree that you should exercise a certain modicum of common sense when protecting your personal details, but that's true of anywhere on the internet.

General Discussion / Re: Why dont we seperate IRL and non IRL?
« on: May 18, 2006, 03:02:53 am »
I think this is a fascinating thread.

From my perspective, I actually quite like that I don't have to reveal anything about me as a person in real life, and conversely do not know anything about other players in real life, and can therefore concentrate on the roleplaying. It makes it much cleaner than I am used to from roleplaying in live action events and tabletop, where time and again I've seen people react to me as a player rather than react to the character, particularly if the two aren't that congruent.

This is not because I am sinister and evil in real life TM - it's just nice to have that distance! :)

Having said that, it's also nice to play a female character without worrying about whether you have missed out on all the cool romance quests, as often can be the case in CRPGs. That's quite refreshing.

General Discussion / Best place and time to find roleplaying?
« on: May 16, 2006, 09:36:45 am »
Hello everyone :)

I downloaded Planeshift a few days ago and have been getting familiar with the forums and the general game world. I haven't played a MMORPG before, although I've been roleplaying for longer than I care to remember, and to be honest I'm thinking the roleplaying is what I'd like to be most involved in around here (though I'm learning to kill rats  and talk to NPCs with the best of them ;) )

While I'm already starting to use the /greet and viciously RP tactic to identify likely RP candidates (victims?) are there any particular groups I should seek out in the game world? I live in Japan so am at GMT +8, and tend to be on either morning UK time (early evening here) or late evening UK time (mid morning here) so advice about groups particularly likely to be hanging out in game at these times would be appreciated.

Are there any other tips you have for integrating into Planeshift's gameworld? Are there any locations apart from the Plaza that are good for finding roleplayers? The tavern always seems to be empty when I go in...

Many thanks (particularly to the nice dwarf who showed me the way out of the Death Realm, and the nice lady who gave me a dagger and coached me on fighting technique), and I'll see you in game!
