Newbie Help (Start Here) / Re: unhelpful GM
« on: June 20, 2006, 10:28:36 pm »

I don't really see this as being a HUGE problem right now, because the death realm isn't that big and it isn't *that* hard to find your way out of.    I found my way out without any guidance or help, but it did take a while to find the way my first time.    I was quite excited when I found the portal and escaped the death realm :)     However,   as a new player, one of the first things that you're probably going to do is die.. .either becuase you attacked something and don't know how to fight, or you get bugged somehow, or fall... whatever.   It doesn't take very long for a new player to die.   When the death realm is much bigger and much more difficult to find your way out of, which I understand is in the works, this could be a much bigger problem.   When you are brand new and you don't know what or where anything is, finding your way out of a massively complicated death realm could really be a deterrent from continuing to play the game.     I'm not sure what the solution is to that ... you don't want to give away the path, it would take away a part of the learning the game experience...  but at the same time a brand new player should get some opportunity to get a feel for the game before being thrust into that experience.

What if new characters got a 6 hour buffer during which time if they die they just get reset to the starting location.    When that time expired you get a message saying your introduction to the game is over and from that point on when you die you will be sent to the death realm.   Or instead of making it a set time, make it that after you've achieved 2 progress points you start having to visit the death realm.    Perhaps something like that could give a new player a chance to experience the world and get a feel for things before being thrust into the "other side".

General Discussion / Re: Npcs getting really hard

I can vouch for teh shared XP thing....  I'm too new to know how it used to be, but the other night I was in a group and I was too weak to kill fanatics, but I grouped with one other guy and we killed one.   I don't remember exactly but it seems like I got 36 xp or something like that.     I got that xp even though I was killed just before my partner got the killing blow.   I believe those fanatics are normally worth 60 or 70 xp (something like that).. so it seems to work.

If XP is always split evenly though, that would mean that a powerful character could very easily powerlevel a new character by grouping with the new character and killing things that he can do solo but that are far more powerful than the newbie could solo... /shrug.     I don't think it's that big of an issue though, this game isn't really going to be fun for very long to the power leveler.   It's much more fun for a longer time if you just take your time and figure everything out when you figure everything out.

I don't really understand this thread...  I'm brand new.    I have been playing the game for 3 or 4 days now... my character is magic focused... i'm strong in the crystal way, very weak in other aspects.   I really haven't felt that the game was too hard...   maybe i'm just used to moving slowly in games :)

I got PP's pretty easily killing rats...  I found quickly that there were a few rats that were much tougher than all the rest of the rats.   I avoided those.   Then I found that amongst the easier rats, some gave 30 xp and some gave 10.   I killed the 30 xp ones more often than the 10 xp ones.    It only took a few kills per pp.   I sold the pelts/eyes/tails and bought a mining pick and used my pp's to learn mining.   That got me some money and I got more pp's which I put into sword skill (sword skill is 2 now).    I bought 2 short swords with the mining money and with sword skill 2 I can kill clackers without fear.    I can only kill a few clackers without having to sit and regain health, so maybe they aren't the best way to go yet.. but nevertheless they aren't hard.   I can wipe out rats like nothing though... and like I said my sword skill is only 2.    If I put in the pp's to get my skill up to 10 or something, I'll have no trouble... it'll take me some time, but it SHOULD take time... I mean MMO's aren't supposed to be done in a day.     What's the rush? :-)

Newbie Help (Start Here) / a few newbie questions
« on: June 12, 2006, 04:22:05 pm »
I just learned how to mine last night... I learned a place where I can mine gold.    How does one know where one can mine a particular mineral, are there teltale signs?   A method of prospecting?   Or do I have to randomly try to dig in every square foot of the world?   I did read in the FAQ a few of the known mines... was just wondering if there was any way to spot a mine.

Regarding Glyphs,  my characters history predisposes him to using magic, especially healing arts.   I found the magic shop and saw the glyphs for sale and was wondering if certain glyphs work with certain "ways of magic" or if they all have combinations that work in each "way" ?     I'm specifically looking for the Crystal Way of course, and I assume that I would be strong in the ally "ways" as well... inspecting the glyphs didn't give me any clue though as to what "way" of magic they benefit.     They are quite expensive to buy so I hate to randomly pick one,  and end up buying glyphs that make "dark way" spells or something of that nature.

Is there a limit to how many progression points you can get?   In otherwords, if I gve myself sword and armor skills, am I then reducing the amount of progress that is possible for my character in magic use?

I did a /who on a character and it said he was level 1.    How are levels determined?   I haven't seen any "level" for my character, only skill levels.    And on that note, how does inspecting a monster determine their strength relative to mine?    I've found that so far things that have the same strength as me actually hurt me fast, but I don't have much trouble fighting things that appear to be weaker than me.    My problems with things of my own strength may be due to the lack of a weapon.   At what point am I able to progress to more difficult creatures?

Thanks,  I tried not to ask anything that would be a spoiler... hopefully these questions are answerable :)

Oh, I understand.. my post wasn't a complaint about the quality of the game and I hope you didn't read it as such :)    I'm actually fairly impressed that it looks as good as it does considering the complexities involved with the creation of a 3D MMO and the fact that this is an open source project with no real "funding", at least no funding in the traditional sense that the commercial MMO's on the market have.

I was merely laughing at the fact that what I got out of my first session playing was basically the 3 things that the above poster stated.    Had I read the forums before playing I could've started with a one play session head start.

Maybe later tonight I can figure out how to get out of the death realm... :)

Newbie Help (Start Here) / How many people play Planeshift?
« on: June 08, 2006, 05:26:44 pm »
Just curious how populated the world actually is?    Last night was my first time playing, and the answer to most of the question on this forum is "ask others in the game for help"... but I literally only saw about 3 or 4 other people the whole time I played last night.    Makes asking others kinda tough :)

I think that the most important thing here is for a new player to understand that the game is designed to teach you three things very early on.
1) The cities for some reason don't have maps signs or directions. This is explained by some as Role Playing. I understand this isn't a modern setting but very few towns that I know of require you to run around all over the place to find key areas. However maybe the merchants don't want to be bothered by custmers. If so Then I guess the whole thing makes sense.
2) you will die jumping from 10 feet in the air, then...
3) it will be very hard for you to find your way out of the death realm by yourself.
After about an hour into the game, you will have learned these and then you can learn the next most important thing. If something seems strange and not working right, look on the forums for known bugs. You will most likely find that your not doing something wrong, the game is.
Good luck.

LOL.. I wish I'd seen this post last night.... I started a character last night and entered the world of planeshift for the very first time.... and I died trying to kill a beatle that I found.   I couldn't hit it, for some reason even standing right on top of it it kept saying I was too far away.   Perhaps I have to aquire a weapon first.... but at any rate I died and ended up in the underworld.    I never did figure out how to get out before logging off for the night.     I did manage to discover all of these points though in the time I played...
