Did you check the Minimum Requirements in the players guide?
I'm not sure if these are necessary for the intsallation.

The only thing i could imagine is your machine running out of RAM during the installation as the installer is about 220M in size

and this might cause hang up the installer and freezes your machine...

And what are the specs about your graphics card?

I would suggest you to get some more RAM as 256MB aren't that much for a system running WinXP. When I upgraded mine to 512MB there was a huuuge speed boost... at least some kind of speedup

i guess we have just to wait for the "official" linux client to get released
