From my point of view they do know how to make money.

I recently upgrade from 5 to 8, mainly because I needed to work with others that had version 8 and naturally version 5 can't open those newer files anymore. What I got with upgrade was lot better texture mapping tools, I could open new files and I needed to install more ram to my computer, 1GB seem to be absolutely minimum to work with 8.

So it has not been huge changes in every new version, but just enough to get companies that use software in their business buy always next version. If Blender would be just less learning I would jump to it, but things are done so differently in Blender that it is really impossible to even consider changing now.

You can make game engine with C++, it is not easy and will take really long time to get something as complex as PS made, usually it takes several years of practise until you can produce anything that can be called game.

Also you need to make 3d models, textures, sounds and this C++ code is just motor that makes all those other things work like it would be a  world inside computer. Then there is some things like directx librariers that you need to learn to use as that way you won't end up so easily to problems caused by different hardware etc.

I have had never enough patience to learn c++, all little applications that I need I have made with Visual Basic as it is very good for those things, but for games you really need to learn C++ and if you have patience enough it is really good skill to have.

Microsoft Visual C++ is then different from for example Borland C++ which is more standard if I have understood correctly. Then you can get completely free tools to write C++ programs too, gcc compiler and some text editor with C++ support might be good too. I don't know if there is free tools to designing user interfaces graphically for C++ code.

Anyway I wish you luck and really keep with it, even it starts to feel boring or too difficult, sometimes taking few days brake also helps to get over difficult things ;)

Oh yes, here is little explanation for those who are not familiar what C++ is:

Newbie Help (Start Here) / Re: Name issue - possibly??

What is known in US and what is known in Europe is of course different, then there is even what is generally known in each contry.

For example name Lalli is medieval name, it is not english name as is not name of topic starter's character, but for me it is bit unclear if such name is allowed or not?

This is quite widely known legend in Finland, but most likely as unknown in US as legend of topic starter's character name.

These can of course make some not wished effects in game and I believe such names should not be used because of that. Of course it is quite impossible to know all these things and there is no way GMs or Moderators could know everything, but this might be good guideline for choosing name in instrucitions so new players could be aware of policy. Of course if this is taken to policy.

I believe issue will come up more often in some distant or not so distant future, when there is more players from different countries.
